This may come as no surprise, but the coaching staff was riled up at the officiating last night (weren't we all). However, I haven't seen posted about what really got them heated.

On one of USF's series in the first half, on first down, USF runs a fly pattern down the left (away) side and throws deep and incomplete. The receiver exits the field around the far 10 yard line and USF immediately steps on another receiver and immediately snaps the 2nd down play. Malichi Moore, as deep safety is still 30 yards downfield and has not had time to get back.

Williamson's crew fails to notice the substitution and does not hold play to allow for a substitution.

On 2nd down, USF again runs a fly pattern down the left (away) side and throws deep and incomplete. Again, the receiver exits the field around the far 10 yard line and USF immediately steps on another receiver and immediately snaps the 3rd down play. Moore, as deep safety is now 50 yards downfield and has not had time to get back.

Williamson's crew fails to notice the substitution and does not hold play to allow for a substitution.

On 3rd down, USF runs a receiver right into the 10 yard area where the deep safety usually is and completes a pass for a first down.

Our staff was noticeably hot about this and I think this started the angst with the officiating crew.

This was Gus Malzahn level bush league stuff and officials in the modern age of football should be aware enough to see those quick substitutions and hold play as the substitution is made.

Also, it didn't help with the officials in the 4th quarter when USF got a holding penalty and our staff had to remind them to actually enforce the penalty yardage...

Here’s the way Heupel, Golesh, Malzahn, and their ilk look at it: ”It isn’t a penalty unless the officials call it”. It isn’t just about fooling your opponent. It is about fooling the officials as well.
And doing the latter isn’t difficult to do given some of clown troops we have officiating college football these days.

Golesh certainly spent a lot of time talking to the officials. At one point I thought they were going to order pizza and beer. I just hope that crew doesn't officiate another Bama game.

That was David Smith's SEC crew. And yes, they had a bad day.
I think it was a non-sec crew. They certainly didn't look familiar and I think it was a stipulation in the home and home agreement. Same with their game at Penn State a couple years ago.

It was an sec crew that did the game at Cal last year.😎

Interesting what quarter/time did these illegal substitutions happen? I'd like to go back and watch.

It's USF's 3rd possession in the first quarter (at 5:08 left in the first quarter.)

And it's not really "illegal substitutions", rather than a substitution was made, but no hold on play was granted by the crew to allow Alabama to substitute.

But that scenario is exactly why that rule was implemented. The back judge should have radioed the exit of the receive…or the deep wing guy.
