Re: ***S Landon Collins commits to Bama II***
A few thoughts:
The biggest recruiting coup in the Nick Saban era? I think the answer is a definitive yes. Probably the biggest recruiting coup in all of the country the past couple of years, honestly. To go into the literal backyard of LSU and steal away a player who is one of the elite's elite in a year they go 13-0 and are #1 in the country, all the while his mother is vehemently opposed to it? Nothing short of amazing. I've tried to think of something similar not only at Alabama but at any other school in the country in recent years and I'm at a loss.
Can't say I'm too worried about the mother. If Collins were really all that concerned with what she thought, clearly he would have committed to LSU last night; no doubt she didn't wait until last night to first express her true feelings with him on the subject. For what it's worth, I imagine her little pouting stunt on national television last night probably only strengthens his resolve, which was totally uncalled for, by the way. Air your concerns in private, no use trying to run down your son on national television or make yourself look like a jilted mother in the process. Just bad taste on her part, even though done with good intentions.
A flip here is a definite possibility, of course, as anyone who followed the Brent Calloway and Cyrus Kouandjio recruiting melodramas should know; it's still a long way until National Signing Day. Peer pressure can be a big influence even for the strong-minded, and he's going to have a lot applied to him over the next four weeks. Again, though, not too worried about it at the moment. He seems solid now, and as long as we have the girlfriend on our side then that counterbalances most, if not all, of it.
Fair warning: As I indicated before his commitment, January 9th could change a lot here. Only makes that one even that much bigger for us. Even more at stake now.
