Second Spring Scrimmage Notes

Love to see Dial putting up some good numbers for a DE. He should make an impact early on. I think they stat lines were good on both sides of the ball this time. Our starters on both sides had some good stats and they all had some stuff to work on which is what you want in a spring scrimmage

My main concern with our defense is Mark Barron. I loved Lester last year, but Barron was pretty bad at times. Now throw in the arrest a couple of weeks ago, and you really have to wonder where Barron's heads going to be at in preparation for this season. On the other side of the ball, Hanks's numbers are really encouraging.

I am confused as to when Barron looked bad last year?

It's hard to tell a lot from scrimmage stats, but one thing I saw in the article that pleases me is that Dont'a is showing impressive leadership! We need leaders on both sides of the ball.

Exactly. Never know who was going against who at the time. It's fun for us to think about, but it's just us thinking, instead of us knowing. That is, of course, for those of us who weren't there.

We also have to remember that the offense had a great day against the defense last week. Then today the defense stepped it up. That's very encouraging to me. No one side is having its way with the other consistently.

Noooo. Barron, like any safety, got caught out of position and had some plays made on him, but in no way does that qualify him as "pretty bad."

Hammer meet nail. Exactly!! Every DB (S and CB) get beat at times, but Barron was one of our most consistent players. If anything, Lester got sucked in on running plays too much that allowed a RB to get a big gain. But even then, Lester played very well for a first year starter.

Hmmmmm.....third post, unsubstantiated barb at the playing abilities of a player who would be in the NFL now if it weren't for a late season injury, followed by bringing up an off-the-field incident. CYA by throwing a nice bone about another player. I smell a cow chips and hear a mooo coming.

We have some major talent at WR(with more coming in the Fall)..We'll miss Julio..I think we'll have better production as a whole without Julio at the WR position..I can't wait to see some of the young stud WR's this coming season..DeAndrew White in particular..

Until his consistently spectacular performance over the last half of the 2010 season, I thought Julio was one of the more perplexing players we've had for a number of years.

He could make all-time highlight reel plays (one-handed diving TD catch against Kentucky; game-breaking sprint down the left sideline against LSU), but until late in his third year was good for at least one or two drops a game.

He was one tough son of a gun, playing with a broken hand, and running a surprising time in the combine on a broken foot. But it seemed like he was forever dinged up. Given his tolerance for pain, I know that if he was affected it would have brought mere mortals to their knees. But still, he was undeniably injury prone.

If it weren't for Julio's breakout in consistency during the last half of 2010, I might agree that we'd have little dropoff in the pass-catching aspect of the WR spot.

Where I think he is 100% irreplaceable is on two fronts where, no matter who the new guy is, he won't be in the same stadium as Julio was: Blocking and attracting double-coverage. Look at Ingram's TD run against Ole Miss just before the half in 2009. Julio drove his man dang near across the field. An out of shape middle-aged member of the OFC could have run through the hole he opened. Opposing defenses had to account for him on every single play, and most did it with double coverage. It helped both the other WRs and the running game.

I don't think we can replace the pure pass-catching of the last half of 2010, and am certain we can't replace the other parts of Julio's game.

The boogs always like to poke fun at Barron since he's had two touchdowns thrown on him in the last two Iron Bowls. The problem is, he was seriously injured in last year's game and couldn't help it. I hope he comes back and has an All SEC game against those losers this year.

I agree 100% with ya Basket Case..I guess I'm trying to say we'll have better production just because our passing won't be centered around Julio so much..We have more talent at WR than any team at Bama has ever had..If we spread the ball around to all that talent..Our offense will be better than it was when Julio was here..That no knock against Julio(He's the best WR ever at Bame)..It's a knock against how GMac was hell bent on getting Julio the ball even when other Players were wide open..It hurt our offense more than a few time..JMO

Nothing on Blake Sims, is he still working with the Qb's? Does anyone think he will end up on D before it's all said and done? :conf2:

No stats on Ely either, but keep in mind not all stats are reported, some things are kept out of the numbers. I for one dont believe that Chapman and Williams have gone this far into the spring without a tackle in the las scrimmage, however thats what the stats tell us.

on the other hand, they would be giving AJ and PS most of the snaps anway and figure we dont care or need to know how the 3rd and 4th string guys are doing. Combine that will the praise that Blake has drawn from observers and I think its more just a product of our current QB battle than a sign of where Blake ends up.

That being said I think his future is on the O side of the ball....somewhere.

Blake has practiced at QB only with the second and third groups. He had a couple of nice passes while on the run Saturday. Ely with the threes. Chapman and Williams with the ones. Chapman at nose and Williams at end. Williams looks to be favoring his repaired knee some.

Love to see big JALSTON FOWLER being used on the goal line. The man is a beast

Built like a brick wall. Reminds me of Le'Ron McClain.

McCarron and Phillip Sims have been switching in and out with the 1s and 2s.

Chapman is huge! He is easily 325 lbs.

Douglas has been playing with the 2s at LT.

Love was put in for a few plays with the 3s? (can't remember)

Hit of the day goes to Vinnie Sunseri. He layed someone out right after they caught the ball and turned. Can't remember who he hit.
