Is that true? I don't know much about the Senior Bowl so I'm not sure if you are kidding or not, but I find that hard to believe.

Not only can you not blitz, but, I don't believe the D-line can even stunt or anything like that. This is pretty standard for football all-star games... I think the NFL Pro Bowl has similar rules.

I had no idea. So it sounds like the defense is at a pretty significant disadvantage in these games.

That is what they want. They are trying to minimize injuries and they are assuming most fans don't want to see a defensive game.

I understand wanting to try to keep injuries to a minimum, but at the same time, I can't help but think that this is football. There is always a risk of injury. They have faced blitzing defenses their entire college careers and will continue to face them in the NFL. If they just want to give the quarterbacks a chance to show off, they could just throw the ball into those giant Dr Pepper cans and see who gets the most in. No one would get hurt then.

I'm not meaning to sound harsh. It would be a shame if some of these kids got hurt right before they have an opportunity to go to the NFL. But I guess I don't really see the point in the game if they are limiting the defense in such a way as to not make it a real game in the first place.

With so little time to work together, no Offensive Line could be expected to be ready for blitzing or stunting defenses. Too many defensive players would get through untouched.

Fan Frenzy

I had a game worn #55 jersey that belonged to Kenny King autographed on the Friday before the game a few years ago. Me and a buddy of mine skipped class to stand in line for about 3 hrs but it was worth every minute to see a Bama player put on the crimson helmet for the last time.

I have a question for any of you guys north of the Mobile Delta. What kind of media converage does the Senior Bowl get where you are?

The week is literally an NFL convention. Every head coach will be here at some point (with exception of two Super Bowl coaches), NFL Team players show up, ESPN and NFL Network, is giving week long wall-to-wall coverage, and the game itself is coverage nationally. But I don't ever seem to recall when I was in living in Birmingham or Montgomery any of the local media outlets even sending one reporter to cover the week. Finebaum, for instance, has never done a live feed from here, but Dan Patick has.

Why do you think that is?

I think Birmingham and Montgomery don't like the exposure that Mobile gets for this event and they are reluctant to come down. Just my opinion

I don't know if jealousy is the rationale. However I think ignorance of what really goes on might be the biggest factor.

I would really like to paste this question to the larger forum and see what kind of responce I get.

All-Star game rules .....

No blitz . No stunt . No rushing kicks or punts .
Those are usually the "norm" for these games w/some even putting restrictions on offensive formations . There is an upside , the scouts get to see players isolated in more 1 on 1 situations while preparing during the week of practice .
This is usually very telling in regards to battles between OT's & DE's . They get an opportunity to shine or be humiliated by the best .

RTR !!!!! Out !

You are...

discovering that this is a low news (and low posting/reading) time of the year, with the exception of recruiting. Looking from the Huntsville standpoint, there's usually a couple of articles in the Times on UA and AU players who are participating and, I think, that one or more of the TV stations will have a reporter there. It's a long way to Mobile. About the same distance as Cincinnatti... :D

We'll merge the..

duplicate "coverage" thread. I can't really remember being jealous of Mobile, nor can I really think of why I should be?

Senior Bowl Coverage

For those of you have Direct TV, there is Senior Bowl coverage each afternoon with a recap at 8:30 p.m. on the NFL channel (212 in Chattanooga) Last night was coverage of the north squad with Coach Fisher of the TN Titans. Tonight there is coverage of the south squad.

For those with a Bamamag subscription, scout.com has a daily practice report page with comments about players at weigh-in and comments about each player at practice. Really an interesting read.

As I said Earle, I don't think "jealousy" is a legit reason for what seems to be a lack of state wide coverage. I was just wondering, aloud, why it seems Senior Bowl Week gets much greater national attention than in-state. My answer was not "jealousy", but ignorance of what really goes on here this week. I think alot of folks in state don't realize this is THE convention for the NFL. The week brings in hoards of college and, of course, pro coaches. Otherwise, I think you would see more coverage for the practices and such.

My reason for the "additonal thread' was to move it up front so I could get more opinions.

Thanks.
