If you take a step back and look at the big picture, we are going to be better off in a few years because of how Shula is handling the program now. He is rebuilding this program the right way by bringing in talented freshmen, and not going into panic mode and bringing in a bunch of JUCO players that would essentially only patch things up for a couple of years. Right now, we have a bunch of sophomores, freshmen, and redshirt freshmen waiting in the wings. In a few years, those guys will be Redshirt seniors, juniors and sophomores. I think patience is the key for the success of this program in the future. If we can let Shula have enough time to get us back on a level playing field, we are going to be a very good football program again with a very good coach. We've been so close in alot of big games where we were clearly outmanned. Once we're back to where we should be, those close loses will start translating into wins.

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

great post!...

i couldnt agree more.. i heard that we have 67 freshman or sophomore on the team this year! 67!

shula has recruited incredibly well for the circumstances since he has been here!

guys we are a VERY young team and once we gain experience the rest of the SEC better watch out!

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

I agree with your post.

I do have a question. Is there any insite as to the plan for all those redshirts?

I mean specifically, the OL. With 3 good ones from last years class not currently playing (Ross for example), where they redshirted for the future or where they not good enough to beat out the current starters. It seems a weak spot on the right side of the line at times.

I haven't studied this, building a program from the ground up, but it would seem that we holding back some guys with some intent in mind, or I just don't have a clue. Could be the latter.

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

I recall the bad days of not even going to a bowl game at least we will, (should) go to a bowl game. This lets the young players cont. to work and makes the off season a lot shorter.

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

This is a great post. I couldn't agree with you more. Truth be told, I'm ready for the days to come back when the rest of the nation looks at Bama with a necessary concern and a certain nervousness in their bones. I'm ready for Bama to be back on top, where we should be. Roll Tide Roll!!!:BigA:

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

I know we have had some problems.....but i think that there is not a team that don't take us serious. bama will always be a concern for other teams. but this is a great post....the bamanation is very spoiled... we want it right now. but with probation got to crawl b4 you walk.

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

Double ditto! CMS is redshirting his OL from this year's class except for AS who is just too much of a talent to stay on the bench. Andre just amazes me each time I see him play.

Unfortunately, too many of those of TideFans are used to instant gratification and can't or don't want to see the big picture. I'm willing to wait as I feel CMS and his staff are rebuilding the right way -- with youth, talent and character.

Don't get me wrong. I am not looking for "instant gratification". I know it will take a lot of work to get us back up to that level. I know that takes time, and I have no problem with that. I'm just looking forward to the days when we are back on top. I'll be right there backing the team, win or lose, along the way, as I always have. I'll just be happy to see all this hard work, rebuilding, and preparation pay off in the long run, in the form of a rock-solid Crimson Tide Football Team.:BigA:

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

How many years do we have to wait for CMS to bring us back? I'd love to see the guy pull it out but I'm not sure how many more "wait till next years" I can take. I'd give him two more years to get us in the SEC title game with improvement each year. I'm younger than most of you guys but even I know 7-5 isn't what Alabama is all about.

Re: Shula is rebuilding our program the right way

Nice post and I agree. The problem that us Bama fans have going for us is that we expect results NOW and we live in a world of "what have you done for me lately?" Patience is the key...while it may be hard, we are moving in the right direction.

Well, realistically, the NCAA hit Bama with some very tough sanctions. Not only did the loss of scholarships cause much of our pain now, it also caused significant damage to recruiting. The minute the sanctions were laid down, a friend who is a coach said, "Well, they are toast for about 8 to 10 years."

The only other team to be hit this hard, actually harder, was SMU back in the 80's. Auburn can say all they want about being on probation and sanctioned, they have NEVER been hit like this.

One cannot compete on a fair playing field in the SEC with the fewer number of scholarships Alabama was given. Furthermore, that continues making holes for a couple of more years while those holes are repaired. It makes for a very young team right now, and very few scholarships to offer this year. It doesn't just go away overnight. The seniors for the next year or so are from some of Bama's weakest recruiting periods due to sanctions and reputational blows while AU, GA, LSU, and TN got the cream.

No one wants to admit it, but Bama will still suffer somewhat for a little while longer. It gets better, and progress is definitely there AHEAD of schedule. Most folks are just too impatient (including me sometimes) and believe that attitude alone will win ball games. It will win some, but not championships.

Exactly how many times have you been told to "wait until next year"? By all accounts, 2007 is the first year that we should even compete for the SEC championship again, yet we were right in the thick of it last year...
