Spencer Pennington

Reports are Dave Rader has employed a man by the name of Richard Todd to work with Spencer on running and passing from the option. All I can say is my nephew who would not know Richard Todd if he told him called me and ask me who is Richard Todd. I said you are kidding right! Of course my nephew was only 5 when Todd was at Alabama. The Crimson and White also is printing a story about Mr. Todd's presence at Alabama. It appears visits this year by Namath, Jordan, Bennett, Lyons, Wheeler, and others are having positive results. Coach Shula has ask that several different players who know about winning come to the practices and games to talk about what is expected of each player. Coach Shula in my book is a winner and is building something special at Alabama. These men know the price of Victory is high but so are the rewards. Coach Shula understands people. He should his Dad is a NFL Hall of Famer. BTW his DAD has not missed a GAME.

Color me...

skeptical. I just don't think that SP has the footspeed and nimbleness to run the option successfully. And, bottom line, we don't have enough experienced RBs to run it now, either. That being said, it would be nice to have one or two change of pace option plays - sort of like the way fRan would throw them in...

The risk...

to SP also crossed my mind. Anyone who watched his "non-escapability" while taking the sack at UT, couldn't, IMO, get real excited about him running an option play. I hope I'm wrong and he proves it. Maybe the report was inaccurate. Maybe he's going to work with Guillon, Thrash or Milwee.

I agree that SP doesn't look fast but Brodie ran it under FRan and he isn't a burner either.3 or 4 times a game would be nice to get Darby on the corner.I'm curious now, whos faster in the 40?SP or BC?

Maybe Shula is going to do what Miss and Tenn has been doing. We could alternate QB's especially if the two walkons are fast and dangerous. However, I do think we have a lot to lose this year. We need to be Miss St., LSU, and Auburn if we want to go to a good bowl game.

Guillon has enough foot speed to run a decent option, but not with a bad back. If Jared Battleship Lorenzen could run one at UK, Spencer could too. However, it doesn't just happen over night. It would be nice to see a couple on 2nd or 3rd down and 3 to go. But, I'm not going to get my hopes on seeing one this season.

Not a bad idea, imo. Richard Todd is probably the most successful college ball option QB to go on and have a successful career in the NFL as a passer. Most have probably forgot, but RT had some great years w/ the Jets in the early eighties. A smart move by Shula, if you ask me....

Option

Maybe Todd was there to work with someone else. Perhaps CMS wants to rotate QB's with Spencer starting and Prothro coming in some to run the option. It could work. Prothro is a star just waiting to emerge. Maybe CMS and his staff saw a weakness in MSU's team that he thinks the option will exploit.

I hope that if Todd was on campus last week he was working with SP on his passing. Todd was a pretty good passer off the run fake. Maybe he was helping SP with his ball fakes and showing him how to find his receiver and get the ball off more quickly.

According to what I've heard from the media the past few days, the Starters didn't practice at all during the last 1 or 2 practices before Sunday.

Do you think that Shula has decided the backups might bust out the option offense if they are forced into action, which is probably a little easier to grasp than the normal NFL multiple formation, pro-set which is the standard O?
