Spring Practice Predictions

I wonder if Mac has put any meat on his chicken legs since last year.

Not sure. But I've read in a few online articles that he is very in tune with people expecting B. Young to come in and be the starter. From what I've read about Jones' personality, he's VERY competitive and has some cockiness about him. I believe it was reported that he even would talk trash to Coach Saban when he was the quarterback of the second team offense going against the first time defense. The guy isn't going to lay down and give the starting job away. It seems he's got a lot of grit.

That's an understandable concern and one I think many of us will be keeping an eye on, but in context, that was his third total start, and really his first against a decent defense. In Tua's fist major game action under pressure, not even starting against UGA, Tua threw a pick and took two sacks. Not that it makes the two equal, just that inexperience can cause some mistakes.
As a first year freshman, there's no way even a Bryce Young can come in with so little experience with the difference in the speed of the game between HS and college and be ready to take over. Bryce may be an exception, not saying he couldn't. But he's likely going to need combat experience to get adjusted to that difference. Mop-up duty is a good place to get your feet wet in competition. Here's to all the backups being able to log a bunch of snaps in mop-up this season!

Mac played with poise in big games. Lia never took a snap in a big game.
Mac was a 65% passer against the AU and UM defenses. Lia never faced a defense worth a spit.
Mac threw 7 TDs against those 2 defenses. Lia has 1 TD pass, against WCU.
Mac was a field general. Lia did his job, but he was never asked to be a leader.

Can't disagree...

I think he’s outstanding...but his legs look like they can barely support him.

To play devil's advocate, the same could have been said about Tua. Furthermore, Hurts was in some ways at least more experienced and more accomplished then Mac. Sure, Mac is more of a prototypical quarterback than Hurts was, but the point still stands.

I don't expect Young to win the job outright in the spring or even fall, but I'm far past declaring the most obvious guy gets the job. Hurts took the job from the more experienced quarterback, then Tua took it from him...

In both cases they were first year freshman.

I agree...everything has changed in just a few years with these freshmen phenoms. If that has been evident anywhere, as you document, it is crystal clear here.

Although Jones has a huge advantage with experience, Bryce Young is exactly the kind of player who could overtake someone who is ahead of him. This doesn't mean he will, but he's the kind of rare talent that makes this more of a possibility.

When he played in the HS all-star game, with limited time to practice and develop chemistry with the receivers, he looked like a seasoned veteran running that offense. This kid is different. When Saban oozes over a freshman recruit, we should pay attention.

I think you’ll be able to tell what the staff thinks of BY by what plays they run when he’s in the game. First, he has to beat out Taulia. There’s no evidence he’s done that yet. When he gets in the game if the offense is ran, they think a lot of him. Backup quarterbacks here have typically ran the handoff offense. Tua was the exception. Tua threw the ball on first down, second down, etc. Tua threw the ball deep even when we were ahead. Tua ran an offense, not just run the clock. We will see soon what happens with the backup.
As far as spring predictions, I think we will have to rely on more freshmen this year as well as the transition begins to a faster, more disruptive front.

I look for Mac to have a great spring and to firmly establish himself as the heir apparent to Tua. He is the leader and much further along in development and familiarity with the system than any of the others. I just hope our young guys remain patient—they will get their turn.

My dad used to tell me "There's only so much you can learn on the bench before you begin falling further and further behind the guys you're trying to beat out that are on the field playing." That is a very true "thing".
To quote the TV series... 'FATHER KNOWS BEST'.
(Younguns will have to search the internet for it.)

Hope so. Grit is always good.

It's gonna take more than running out the clock experience. When we put in our 2nd and 3rd string QB, we have to let em pass, and have a couple of WR starters in for them to show what they can do.

Based on K Robinson’s limited snaps and production I’d feel good about him being RB2 until we see what Trey can do. Brob needs to improve this season.

He kept throwing to a tall receiver, I believe Shaversz and Saban told him to stop.

Mac told Saban ton stop him.

Tell us something about your source, please...
