2016 Election - Clinton: The Hillary Clinton Thread

as much as people like to wish for it, i just don't see a multi-party (e.g. 3 +) system being any kind of panacea. imo, it would just be a splintering of "coalitions" that currently exist in the two parties and those coalitions would soon band together to pursue greater power/control and it would probably look a lot like what we have now.
It's not a panacea, I don't think anyone ever suggested otherwise. But it would open the door for candidates that don't have the massively funded war chests of the D or R parties, and that can't be a bad thing.

I didn't say anything about you, other than the attitude you posted is why we're stuck with two parties.

"As for voting third party, that's a nice ideal. The pragmatist in me says that's fine in a solid red or blue state, but counts as much as just staying home in any mildly competitive state."

Pragmatic as it may seem, what you posted is why we're choosing between two people who have the lowest likability ratings of any candidates in history.
I think that's a bit of an oversimplification. Only a few states are true swing states, and far more than half the country is solid red or blue. Even if everyone shared my pragmatic view, there are plenty of voters who could throw in for other candidates. In reality, so few vote outside the D and R tickets because they either don't know anything about the alternative candidates or don't like what little they do know. Campaign finance reform would go a long way toward leveling the playing field in voter penetrence.

All those votes thrown away each election.

This is my new thing now. Anytime anyone tells me I'm throwing my vote away not voting D or R is getting told they're throwing their vote away for not going against the broken system to try and fix it (not aimed directly at you Charmin).

Right - tell people that you're voting third party and come back and share their reactions - the overwhelming number of responses will be 'you're throwing you vote away...', not 'I had no idea there were other options available...' or even 'I love Trump / Clinton...'

Agree 100% here. There are a lot of things that need to be fixed regarding elections - unfortunately, the people who are in power are the ones who have to change it, and that's highly unlikely to occur.

actually, we (voters) are the ones in power. if it needs to be changed, it's up to us to do it.

You say this, and technically you're correct, but polls show that most everyone wants campaign reform, yet nothing changes. Consider it an added bonus of being stuck with only two candidates per election.

If we had a true three way race, the House picks our next president.

terms like "campaign reform" are very nebulous and allow folks to project meaning onto them.

I can't tell if you are being serious or not. Just keep voting for whoever has a D beside their name no matter how bad they might be.

this will be the third presidential race in a row, and the fifth out of the eight i have voted in where i am happily voting for someone for president.

Since we're counting, 2012 is the first presidential election where I wasn't completely satisfied with whom I voted. And 2016 will be yet another such time.

I don't doubt that at all. As I said earlier (the part of my post you ignored), if Hillary had a R beside her name all of you libs would be bashing her. It is typical and what I have come to expect from either side. It doesn't matter what type of person is running, the only thing that matters is that D or R.

if if's and but's were candy and nuts.

i primarily vote for democrats because for most of my adult life they most closely represent what i think is a good way to govern our country. i have yet to see any indication of a third/alternative party that i think has a better approach.

if that causes you to reactively think of me as a sheep, i hope you can find some comfort in that, but keep your distance
