Link: The NCAA dives headfirst into UTe recruiting...(Let's try to keep it all here)

Wonder what VolFan1 has to say about this? Either way; can't be good when the NCAA comes knocking.

RTR!!!!

Since you ask :)

Any time the NCAA comes digging around it is trouble. There's no telling what they may stumble upon while they are on campus. I just wish it could be splattered all over the news for a couple of years.

Yes, after what Jajwan James said about Alabama's investigation it is only fitting he be investigated himself.

I don't think James or any other player is being investigated. I think the are being asked about what the hostesses have done. My understanding is that Lattimore, from Byrnes, is the one been doing the talking so far.

ESPN really running with this. Talking about how unusual this investigation is in that they are talking to recruits who have not committed yet along with previous recruits...

Did they use the Lady Vols logo? :)

is it safe to assume that this type of thing is going on over at USCw? he had to have learned it somewhere

That was topic of discussion at work today. I am sure many of the things Tennessee has done since CLK got here are things they did at USC and nothing was questioned about them.

I agree, my point was the fine line between major or secondary violations. They are official representatives of the University.

Are they there in an official capacity? I think that is what UT will claim, that these girls "struck up friendships with the recruits" and "took up the initiative on their own to go see them" but were not directed or supported by the University in doing so. Obviously if the University paid their expenses then this argument is negated and suddenly UT is looking at potential Major violations, IMO

J

I think your post is spot on!

I have to second what an earlier poster to this thread mentioned, and that is two of their leading recruiters (including Eddie Gran, on a staff packed with recruiters) just left the team for other gigs. From an up-and-coming Tennessee to either FSU (tanked under BB) or LSU (tanking slowly b/c of Lesslie), I dunno, just seems strange. I don't want to say lateral moves, b/c UT is not there yet, but "recruiting" is getting them there. Oh wait! I think I've got it!

I have no idea what Gran and Wilson know. I do know that they both left and approximately doubled their salaries. Wilson went to his home state and Gran went to a place the he has been a great recruiter.

If this is true, Kiffin's career in the NCAA as a coach just ended...

Agreed

You wonder when if ever CLK reaches the tipping point with his bosses. This has been almost ritualistic in its regularity, one transgression after another.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in meeting that Hamilton has had with Kiffin. Just to see how the discussion go.

Someone on Finebaum referred to the scandal as TAILGATE:)

That is funny. I read where Finebaum didn't have much to say on the situation.

Here is my take. I have spent much of the day on Volquest trying see what all would come out. I really don't know what to think at this point. Did the girls make the trip on their own? Will we ever really know? If they did, I see no problem. I don't know if that would be a violation or not, if they went on their own dime. It UT told them to go and/or paid for it, I would think we will be in trouble. What kind of trouble, I have no idea.

Of course, I hope this is nothing to really worry about once it is sorted out. It has potential to be something big. I think Slive and Co are just sitting and waiting to make an example of Kiffin. I think the one has already passed Slive and the NCAA may get their chance to nail us. As you guys know, if the NCAA wants to get you they will. Unfortunately there is not much you can do if the NCAA wants to sanction you in some way.

The timing of this could not have been worse with right now being HUGE for recruiting! Hopefully our recruits don't start decommitting. I am sure we will lose a couple between now and NSD, I think that would be normal.

The girls can't decide to make the trip on their own. They are official representatives of the university. I expect that pleading ignorance is not an option at this point. If they didn't know they should have. Very much like the textbook thing at BAMA.

My question is this. Do you believe that Hamilton or the university have Kiffin or Orgeron under control. Is the recruiting process under the level of control that it should be. I don't believe either of the questions above can be answered with a definite yes. If Kiffin gave the SEC commish the bird would that not be his approach to others in the chain.

This is the NCAA's second look at UT in less than a year along with multiple violations that were self-reported after they became public. Kiffin and his recruiting staff may have already tripped the threshold of LOIC. From what I can tell, these guys are completely out of control.

Right now would be a good time to have Slive in their corner but i don't think that will happen since he is so 'meaningless'.

From experience, we know that the NCAA does not fly people all over the country without and agenda. There is no telling how ugly this can get if the NCAA decides to try and get Kiffin in line.

I don't think any of us wonder where the influence for that type of behavior begins.

She looks so sad.
Now Boca sad. :frown:
Wait ... now Boca happy again.

With the info thats out there now on the surface, it would seem these appear to be secondary violations. However, Vol fans should have some concern with the the series of events since Kiffin has been hired. Warning signals are flashing everywhere, one right after another and have been for a while.

This is the NCAA's second look at UT in less than a year
Not sure what the other time was, unless you are referring to Bryce Brown. That was into his amateur status about the way funds were raised for a trip he and several others made while in high school. It had nothing to do with anything UT was involved in. There was also no wrong doing found in it.

It is easy to believe all of this except the credit card thing. As others have noted, even Kiffin isn't stupid enough to use a credit card with his name on it.
First, Tiger Woods. Now UT. Man, this is getting good. It is going to be fun to watch as all the juicy details emerge. What goes around comes around.

Uh, Mike Price???

Comments from DE commit Brandon Willis:
Willis says UT commitment not 100% > Palmetto Sports Recruiting News

Byrnes DE Brandon Willis (6-3 255) has been committed to Tennessee since mid-season after decommitting from Florida State. Wednesday, during a break from practice at the North-South game, Willis said he is taking a look at other options. "I'm still committed but I'm still open," Willis said. "I'll take two more visits to Miami and Cal. After that, I'll really for sure make my decision." Willis has taken official visits to Tennessee, North Carolina and UCLA. Willis is one of the players named in the New York Times story Wednesday about an NCAA investigation of Tennessee recruiting practices, specifically the fact that a group of coeds attended the games this season of some Tennessee targets and held up signs aimed at those players encouraging them to sign with the Vols. "Yea, I've heard about it but the things that happened weren't illegal," Willis said. "We've already sat down and talked about it. We'll see what happens." Willis confirmed that he had talked with the Tennessee staff about the allegations. "Nothing that happened was inappropriate," he said. "Of course, they are going to investigate because things like that happen. But, the things that happened, none of that was illegal." Willis added that the investigation does not influence his thinking about Tennessee. He described his committment to the Vols as "medium. I wouldn't say soft, I wouldn't say firm. It's in between." Willis graduates early and wants to make a final decision within the next four weeks.

How will we get blamed for this is what I am thinking about right now! Because we are the only school that does any wrong, all others are perfect!

As I think of it, I wish someone would dive Fist first into Kiffin's face to get that smirk off it.

his name should be lame kitten.

Several comments from blogs about this "situation" mention that one of the girls' home was in the area of the game visit and happened to bring home two of her friends. Also it was said that one of the girls was dating one of the recruits. See the spinning start...

Two things stand out 1. The girls held out signs saying to "Come to Tenn". 2. Other recruits have told the NCAA that hostesses have told them that they wanted to come see a high school game where they played. One was even in Florida. That sounds like sure instruction on recruiting, doesn't it?

We all know that the NCAA is not governed any law but their own. It is their perception that counts not proof. If you strike a match the NCAA can call it a forest fire if they want. I would worry Tennessee.

Alabama disbanded the Bama Belles on or before September 2004 due to the sweeping recruiting changes imposed by the NCAA in the wake of high-profile scandals at Colorado and Miami. Wonder why Tennessee didn't do the same?

Everyone knows by now, Kiffin doesn't know squat about the NCAA rules. He's proven that several times since becoming the HC at UT. If I'm a recruit and he's assuring me something isn't inappropriate, I'm banking on it being inappropriate.

I disagree, I think he knows them very well which lets him walk the very thin line he has up until now

I don't think this is going to be anything major. It seems like the girls are being thrown under a bus, but why wouldn't they. no one at UT is going to fall on a sword for this. I just wish that there was a system in place where a certin amount of secondary violations turned into a major, and I also think there should be a third kinda middle violation cause although things like this aren't as major as paying a player its alot worse that some of the other "secondary" violations I have read about.

No, I think it has been very well documented that Kiffin doesn't know NCAA rules, or rules on the field of play, very well. He's proven time and again since he's arrived in Knoxville.
