The way too early discussion on whether Ty Simpson should return next season or enter the draft

Do you remember what we both heard the other day about Russell: "He's very very good."
I kind of hope Ty does really well against the Barn and whoever Alabama plays in the post season so he decides to head to the NFL so he and Alabama can move on.
He will always be the "what might have been" QB is he had been named the starter in 2023.

I've stated this before but I think it would be a mistake for him to leave. I can't name a single QB who had 1 year college starting experience and had a great NFL career. Closest I have seen is Cam Newton but he at least got to play at the JUCO level too

I also think Ty is good enough that I don't mind losing a QB because he is returning

I think he should stay 100%. He hasn't had the reps. QBs who get such a low amount of reps don't end up doing well.

He's ran the offense very well but he has a good chunk of cleaning up to do.

We will either have a new QB in 26 or 27. And, if Ty goes, it's his choice.

It's really out of our hands so we are just guessing which scenario might work out better for Bama football.

As much as I've loved seeing Ty guide Bama this year, I do think Russell can take us to another level.

So we will start over next year or in 27.
I am not going to sit here and wring my hands over what some 19yr old kid decides to do because he is not starting right this very second. I think it would be incredibly stupid for any QB to transfer simply because they are not starting as a true sophomore/RS freshman but if they do whoopty do, next guy up. We can get on this carousel endlessly- maybe we should push Russel out for the next 5 star, etc etc. IMO you can’t run a program like that for long (see Colorado). I think it would be best for the program for Ty to come back next year as a veteran and I’m just not going to worry about what tantrums the bench throws. Unless someone has inside info that Russel is demanding to start or transfer, I really don’t think he transfers.

If he finishes strong he’ll hit the draft and probs go early second. If he continues on the current path I think he comes back but who knows if it’ll be here or somewhere else. Mack I think is gone either way. I think the coaches and gm are anticipating both leaving bc we have a lot of young guys coming in. You wouldn’t spend qb money on that many guys if you didn’t feel like you have to. If I’m an nfl gm I would be VERY worried about his long ball accuracy/strength and how he appears to go on tilt when things aren’t going well. Which is why Saban said he never climbed the depth chart. If I was his dad I’d tell him to transfer to a smaller school with less pressure and less stakes and just absolutely pad my stats. NFL gms will and do take chances on qbs every year but it’s hard to run from being tagged a “head case”.

Ty throws one pick 6 and he is now a head case that should transfer to a smaller school to get to make it in the NFL? Really?

Read the post again and take a breath. I said thats what I would tell my kid to do if the current momentum holds. There is an emerging pattern that could mean a loss of draft stock. He should do what’s best for him was the general thought. If he rebounds to his early form I think he goes in the draft and early.

I have wondered this for a few weeks and have come to the conclusion he needs another year at Bama. I'm not going to concern myself with what that might mean the QB roster because there are no guarantees either way, and all I really care about is what is best for the Tide. Another thing is if Ty goes, what's to say CKB doesn't hit the portal for a win now QB rather than starting someone with zero experience (and I know Ty came close to fitting that description this year).

The narrative of him transferring to a lesser program when he could come back to Bama would be way more detrimental to his NFL stock than coming back and competing at Bama and building resiliency.

I read your entire post and I think you are the one who should take a breath- there is no emerging pattern of a doom spiral and talking about how Ty should probably transfer to a small school “if it continues” is blowing the OU game out of all proportion with no consideration for how other deficiencies in the offense have impacted Ty’s numbers compared to earlier in the season.

A first-round contract last year was worth a minimum of $15 million. Top-15 $20 million minimum. Top-10 $27 million minimum. I get that players are getting paid right now, but I think it would be foolish to turn down that money. If he's drafted high, he gets more money. If he's drafted lower, he theoretically gets to spend a couple of years learning behind an established starter. Either way, I'm not sure it would make sense for him to come back if he gets a first-round grade.

It depends on what type of first ground grades he gets. Jalen Milroe got a few "1st round grades" as well and look what happened to him on draft day. If Simpson is getting back half of the first round grades that is also implying "but he may go in the second round". Getting top half first round grades is more secure and less likely he makes a massive slide out of the first round.

This is true, but the last second-round pick last year signed for $7.2 million. Still not a bad gig if you can get it.

With these guys making millions in college I would think more decisions would be made outside of the thought of money when deciding whether to come back for another year or go. Look at Ty, he's already a millionaire and if he came back next season he'd be paid more millions. So knowing if everything ended right there he'd be comfortably set for the rest of his life even if he never suited up in the NFL. So being in that position, I would think players like Ty would make the decision on whether to come back or stay based on things like "Do I need another year to develop my game?" not "more money".

In the NFL it is not about the first contract, but the 2nd. How many quarterbacks come out early and will never probably see a 2nd contract. Anthony Richardson comes to mind. One great college season, high draft pick, and probably out of league.

Not a good example to use. He's likely to see a 2nd contract. He has until 2027 to prove he's worth it and I think he will.

This is true but stars make way more money on their 2nd contract. Especially QBs. So if coming back increases his odds of a big 2nd contract then it would be worth it.
