Thoughts on NIL

NIL is a farce. A disguise for pay for play designed to keep NCAA football protected as an amateur sport.

I want players to be able to make money. This is not the way to do it.

I agree ... it shouldn't be a "Wild Wild West" approach to this concerning the schools/programs. There has to be an answer ... not sure what that looks like going forward but there has to be an answer.

I have posted this before...

Billionaires per state... I only list states that are interested in college football..

186.... California
78....Florida
73....Texas
23....Illinois
18....Georgia, Pennsylvania
13....Washington
12....Colorado
11....Tennessee, Arizona, Maryland
8....Oklahoma
7....Missouri, Ohio, Wisconsin, Virginia
6....Arkansas, N. Carolina, Utah
3....Nebraska, Oregon, Indiana
2....Mississippi, Kansas
1....Louisiana, Kentucky, S Carolina

Alabama....ZERO
I'm just pointing this out to emphasize that Bama had better get a top notch mass funded cooperative going.

I hope we do.

I have a thought, all of these kids that have come through the UofA over the past 17 years that have reaped the benefits by getting millions for playing in the NFL, why can't they get together and pitch in a few million to the collective?

Kinda goes to the point I made in another post ... as of now it doesn't matter how much a program can throw at a player ... the team still has to win on the field.

Ask Texas A&M how the spending money on players and coaches thang is working out for them. Just saying lol

The funny thing is (first of all, has anyone seen one of these “contracts”?):
If it in any way, shape or form is tied to that kid playing for a specific school, it’s not legal.
Are these “yearly” contracts” ?
How long before the “grunts” go on strike for more “pay”? Don’t see them driving any Lambo’s.
I have more but I’d like to see some semblance of info on one of these “contracts”.

There are certain unavoidable things in life. You take someone who didn't grow up rich, and dump about a million bucs on them. it changes you. All of us. Now back that up and think of yourself when you were 18. We've had NIL for a few seasons but this season is the first where literal mountains of cash are being dumped on players as the schools all try to outbid each other for the biggest stars. So I predict you're going to start seeing the same problems you've been seeing in the NFL for quite a while now. We can also look to the NFL to gauge a ROI so to speak. I believe what we will find at the college level is that the QB's are the only players who will give a true big return for the $$$.

You're going to have to stop watching.

I'm here on this site because on some level I still love it. It was deeply ingrained in me as a child. My dad and I shared a deep bond over Alabama football. This bond has never developed between me and my 2 sons though. For me it grew to a love of college football in general as well. I always bought all of the preseason magazines. Paid subscriptions to sites like BOL and bamamag when all of that started.

ALL of that is dead to me now. Due to moving and building a house, I've been without reliable high speed internet, so the streaming services were taken away from me. And I realized... I'm ok with that. So I've watched less football this season than my entire life since childhood. I'll get our house built and we'll have high speed internet again, but I don't know right now if I'm coming back to Youtube TV or whatever else.

The way things are right now, I do not like it. And I'm a person who spent all of that money and time during the Mike's era! I'm not spoiled. But the out in the open paying and poaching of players, which didn't happen in the darkest of days in the old SWC!!! has ruined what love I had left for the game.

The new coach and this site keep me engaged for now. We'll see what next Fall brings. But make no mistake. We the fans DO have power. We just have to choose to exercise it. If my boys don't give a rip about it... what keeps bringing me back as I age with all of these disastrous changes? I have not been able to answer that yet.
I can't watch because I work at the stadium on game days, but this NIL relationship is between boosters and players. The regular fan doesn't factor in.

Stop watching. Stop going to games. Stop buying school merchandise. etc. I've been of the opinion for a few years now that the most enjoyable football to watch going forward is going to be the lower tier schools that have a fierce, regional rivalry. It may get to where watching JSU play UNA is more exciting than watching Bama play Texas because the players are mostly playing for the love of the game and for the pride of their school.
I have to work home games, and I rarely watch away games anymore. Just check online for scores and goings on.

I’m going to say this and it’s going to be controversial and a lot of people are not going to want to hear it. NIL + TP is not like the NFL… it’s more like the MLB. There are restrictions in the NFL and cap limits. In the MLB there are none and you can buy a team.

But here is the thing… how often do the Yankees and Dodgers win? Since 2008 they have the same number of WS rings as one of the poorest teams named the Royals. Just because you can buy a team it doesn’t mean that you’ll dominate. Sure it helps tremendously but in the end building a team is a lot better than buying. Alabama is basically the St Louis Cardinals or Atlanta Braves in this type of structure in which you are not going to win big bidding wars but you can entice enough good players to come because you are Alabama and you have a culture of winning. We need to focus on getting the right players more than the most talented ones.

Ultimately I think something will be done to fix the system because a world without the major powers constantly competing is going to hurt interest. I think should Michigan part ways with Harbaugh then fixing this system becomes a more immediate priority.

Soon all the mercenaries will have moved on, then Bama will have guys who want to be at Bama. Then Deboer and staff can recruit players who want to be at Bama. Washington 25th and Michigan 15th in talent ranking both played for the Naty. It was not Bama, UGA, or Texas. All who are top five in talent ranking. I am not saying there is nothing to worry about losing all these guys, at least short term, but the title CAN be won with heart, commitment and good coaching. Roll Tide!

Any chance that CNS puts money in the collective??? Anything preventing him from doing so? Might be a way for him to smooth over some of the recruiting issues. Or that may just be a crack pipe dream because he despises the current structure of it. Think about the pitch he could offer, "hey kid I have a Mercedes and Ferrari dealership we can make something happen. Also I have a lot of pull in the NFL..."

I'm sure he would sell them what they want, but I hope nobody ever asks him to feed this ravenous NIL beast.
