TOO Conservative!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to know how many of you have stood on a sideline and coached HS or college ball before...I have and it is not as easy as you make it sound. Oh, and by the way, Jr High, Pop Warner and video games do not count. I am disappointed that we lost also but I have been where every single one of the players and coaches have.

Give them a break and lets get ready for Florida...RTR!

Not trying to pick on you REV, but it seems we get a post like yours every time someone questions a coach. First of all, these are grown men,. that make houndreds of thousands if not millions of dollars to do their jobs. they areexpected to do it well. The University of Alabama is not a training school, make your mistakes at duke or tcu , then take a job like this or otherwise be prepared to take flak from learning on the job.
Second, this message board is exactly the forum to voice your displeasure for coaching mistakes, so give the posters a break
Third, our "d' is to inexperienced to play that consevatively, our 'O'has to be more aggressive........ ROLL TIDE!

I am A big CMS supporter, don';t like all his decisions, but the offense looks pretty good overall

When will the crimson colored glasses come off the BamaNation?
To be honest never. There was talk this week about worrying about Miami going after him. While I think Shula has definitely improved, I honestly think he's a bottom third to at best middle tier coach in the SEC. 0-3 against AU, 0-3 against LSU, 1-2 against UT, heck he's 1-3 against Ark. now and 23-18 overall. When you consider the W. Carolina's, Hawaii's, UL-Monroe, Southern Miss's(x3) and Utah State's (x2) that really have padded his recorded its time people understand what shula is: A guy who didn't have enough experience and really started as a poor coach that has improved himself to average at best. Maybe he'll keep getting better and continue to recruit but he's not elite yet.

Bamaga,

No offense taken...my point is this...unless you have stood on the sidelines making calls in a hostile place, you do not have a clue how hard it is. You are right and I agree with you to an extent. The easiest thing to do is sit in front of the TV and sit here and say after the fact what should have been done. Coaches do not have that luxury until they get home and watch the film. I just get tired of reading the constant criticism when 90% of the posters have not walked in their shoes. I remember Coach Bryant telling folks that teachers do not give a weekly exam in front of thousands of people and have to listen to all this. The man had a point.

Coaching lost this one big time.
Too stubborn to go with what works and get out of what doesn't. Too many penalties and playing for the field goal with 3 minutes left are keys.
Darby looks lost. Tiffin is a freshman who really should not have been in that position to miss a fourth time.

Dominated ToP and still lost????

Playing not to loose. Not a good game plan when on the road against a scrubby, fighting foe. But, that is what we did in this one. This game should have been put away during our last drive in the fourth quarter.
Tiffin is in pain right now and it is a shame that he, as a freshman, was put in that situation. I do not blame him for the loss, because we should have been going for touchdowns instead of playing for field goals.
This one goes to the offensive play calling, not the kicker. True, he could have won the game, but it should never have come down to that situation. I still choose to believe Tiffin will turn out to be a great one for us. Just remember, he is a true freshman. Tiffin grew up a lot today. I hope Shula did too.

One thing to remember...if any of the kicks are made or whatever your gripe is and we win, everybody is happy. I bet someone would still be complaining even if we had won. Tide folks, the reality is this...sometimes your decisions work out and sometimes they do not. That is the way life is. Does anyone get on a message board and criticize your job performance weekly and 365 days a year? Probably not...

Nice job rev. I agree.

Actually they do. Dr. Fowler the Orthopod that did Prothro's surgery has been criticized relentlessly over the past year. Seeing as how he makes about 1/4 of Shula's salary (this is underestimating Shula's salary bc it doesn't count his endorsement dollars) if we're going to expect our surgeons to work miracles we should probably expect our coaches to make decent calls. So to answer your question yes some people do get criticized for their job performance. The difference is with them there are consequences. While I'm not willing to throw Shula under the bus, I think Bama fans have earned a medal for patience with Shula.

One question and this is because I am curious...this is nothing personal. Out of the last 4 coaches (Shula, Price, Fran, or Dubose) we have had, which one would you like to have now?

My vote is I will take what we have now. RTR

Do I have to make that choice? I would lean towards Price but I understand that his reputation is in the trash. I understand Shula might be the best the team could do and honestly he's a good recruiter and has a good image.

BUT!!! In my opinion he's lacking the mental edge a head coach needs to outdo the competition. Really, I'd be ok with just keeping him away from the offensive play calling. Have him delegate, stand there and look concerned and let someone capable call the plays.

We were throwing the ball all over the field today. We dominated . But again this little issue of play calling has seemed to rear its head once again.

1. I thought we should have tried to score a TD in the forth tied 17 all.
but hand off Darby, to run time off the clock and 1st and goal I might add.
Tiffin Wide right

2. In OT after an interception....... Darby up the middle 3 times in a row
Tiffin Wide Right

I know people on here have been flamed for critisizing CMS playcalling, but come on, todays game just makes me scratch my head because I can't believe what I saw. I think we should have won this game. The stats will back me up.
Even Gary Danielson made a comment about the play calling. He said something like we needed to stop settling for field goal tries and go for the end zone. Not exact quote but something to that effect

anyway Im sick about this one. Cannot stand losing ones that we should have won.

roll tide and lets gt ready for florida

Clock management before halftime. Playcalling the final regulation drive. If you don't have a kicker, FIND ONE! Somebody on the bench can kick the extra point in OT.
All Coaching mistakes!

How were the coaches supposed to anticipate this poor performance by the kicker? His performance up to this point gave no indication he would ge into an awful rut in this game. Let's be rational.

Wrong. Many people would be happier, but I would still be fed up with the playcalling. Shula has an good offensive coordinator, he needs to let him coach. I think Shula can be a great head coach if he realizes he needs to be the leader, the visionary, the man who holds others accountable.

He's a lousy offensive coordinator.

Shula is still a very young coach to be at a major university. I hate we have to take our licks due to his maturity level, but that's just the cards we've been dealt. As a matter of fact, this loss is still a reprecussion of the sanctions that were placed on Bama. Being a young coach with a young team means mistakes are still a big factor in every game we play. I'm afraid Bama is still in it's infancy state due to the maturity level of our coach.

I'm still making mistakes in life and I'm 41. However, I've been at my job for 14yrs and I'm very comfortable in the decisions I make. I hope we don't have to wait that long.

Shula cost us a shot at Arkansas two years ago (punting inside the forty), cost us the UT game three years ago (punting on fourth and an inch!), refused to close out Hawaii three weeks ago (punting inside forty), and settled for FG's this week, costing us another game.

When will the crimson colored glasses come off the BamaNation?

You have nailed it, my friend. CMS playcalling allows teams that we should beat by 1 or 2 TD's to hang around enough times, and as you have shown, it comes up to bite us. I am sick of the excuses... It's time for results. Since when has it become acceptable at the Capstone for the norm to be mediocre and a 10-2 season a "surprise?" With this type offensive scheme, teams are allowed to stay close by us not having the guts to put them away... TOO AFRAID TO WIN.

Shula either makes changes or makes acceptable results... AND THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE!:mad2:

No one says that they should have anticipated it, but they should have noticed it after the first TWO misses.

Tiffin was 7/9 on field goals coming into the game. Most people would consider that a good average, but it still means he had missed 22% of his field goals coming into the game. Field goals are not automatic. Unless you really think that continuing to attempt to gain yards and heaven forbid score a TD had a 22% chance of turning the ball over, playing for the field goal is the wrong decision, even with a good kicker. Even if Tiffin had made the field goal on the final drive, it still leaves us in position to lose the game with an Arkansas TD. At least in the first OT a field goal would have won the game, but at that point our coaches had to know that Tiffin was rattled.

and we run the ball and paly for the fg 2x.

no excuse, this one is on CMS, and i have been one of his biggest supporters. the players did everything they were asked, ark, pratically handed it to us and CMS let the players and fans down.

this isn't CMS's first year, NO EXCUSE!!!!!

Me too, but that doesn't make him infallible. He's still learning on the job. I hope that he learned something today.

I don't think the plays were too conservative. I would have liked to have seen more of Johns. KD gets the ball, stops, and then runs. Don't know what's up with that. Have to question CMS on why he didn't pull Tiffen and put in Christiansen for the field goal in OT. LT had 2nd and 3rd chances and was just having a horrible day. It happens. But I would have put money in for the field goal try.

Losing really sucks! Had to have two gin & tonics instead of one!

I hope he learned something but did he?

I mentioned this and it if a offensive topic but to make this point I'll say it again.

Brodie got hurt in a blowout. I for one didn't question it because I agreed with the reasons for having him in there. HOWEVER I learned a lesson that day. When you have limited weapons you protect them.

When Alabama went for it on 4th down in a blowout I was standing there with my mouth open and a feeling of dread. The odds were low but I KNEW it was a risk and Shula had to know it was a risk. Urban Meyer was critical of Shula playing Brodie in the game last year in a press conference, some say that's why Shula was running it up. Bottom line was he should have known better, he should have learned and he didn't. I am convinced we are still suffering because of that poor choice.

hope he's learned. But he should have learned against Vandy or even earlier. I don't know the answer. It seems to me that Shula should not call any plays. If Rader can't do it then Alabama needs to find someone that can. The key to me isn't just learning it is finding a resolution.
