Urban Meyer thread 2.0...

I, for one, wouldn't be surprised in the least to see a lawsuit coming from Smith's camp against McMurhpy for libel, given the incorrect allegations he originally made against Smith in his Facebook post.

That is, of course, assuming a Facebook post is legally considered print as opposed to speech.

It's legal enough grounds to fire someone from their job. Happens everyday.

I would be very surprised if he won.

I meant as in determining whether it would be a libel or a slander suit. :)

I wouldn't. Often, the most difficult part of those suits is in proving direct damages. In this case, the man lost his job. And McMurphy's statements about Smith being arrested and charged with felonies are easily verifiable for any reporter, showing a reckless disregard for the truth.

The problem is McMurphy retracted and Zach Smith is far from a decent human being. So I honestly don’t see where anyone would justify that McMurphy did anything that was more damaging to Zach Smith’s job prospects than what Zach Smith already did to himself.

No, McMurphy didn't retract.

He edited without comment, as if he never stated it. A retraction involves an admittance of a mistake, which he didn't do.

Regardless, a retraction is not much of a defense against libel.

So far Meyer has said that he fired Zach because it was what was best for OSU. It would be a stretch for Zach to contend that he would not be a problem for OSU if not for McMurphy. Any real damage would be that done to Meyer if he is fired. In essence, Meyer could prove that McMurphy's second story, in which he called Meyer a liar, led to his firing - even though Meyer could prove in court that he did not lie.

Zach and Courtney are idiots and deserve one another. Meyer deserves what he gets for not firing Zach long ago. McMurphy is a man filled with hatred who has broken every rule in journalism.

Also, with respect McMurphy, remember that he has been fired by ESPN and has had trouble finding employment. He has resorted to "publishing" his work on Facebook. He is wandering in the wilderness, angry and blaming everyone but himself. This story was never about Courtney and Zach - or even about OSU. Brett doesn't care about the metoo movement or spousal abuse. This story was all about Brett and Urban. Brett trying to tear down Urban and lift himself up in the process. Brett trying to become relevant again (if he ever was).

Meyer deserves what he gets. So does everyone else. Everyone.

I see Urban Meyer as guilty.
I figure the punishment will be to throw the AD under the bus... ;)

In my jaundiced opinion...
TOSU trustees will decided it will be cheaper to throw the AD and the President under the bus, than to fire Urban. (Economics 101)

Dear lord this reeks of bitterness on your part.

First, I've seen UA reporters say Brett hasn't had offers for work. That's not the issue t all.

To say "if he ever was" relevant is beyond petty since he was one of ESPN's top national football reporters.

If this was solely to hurt Urban, why is it just now coming out? Why wouldn't Brett report on it years ago when it happened? Why wouldn't he have gone public with the Florida issues then?

Maybe he and Danny kuh-nail could team up to become relevant again.

Right, and my posts about Kanell don't? Was Kanell relevant just because he has a great job at ESPN? Sometimes when you speak of someone, you can't help but be honest about how you feel. I am no more bitter about this guy than you are about Kanell, and no less.

As to why he didn't report about the incidents in 2015 - no one knew about those incidents. There were no charges and no arrests. Courtney and Zach did everything in their power to keep them from becoming public knowledge. Brett wrote his story the day before OSU media days on purpose. He heard about Zach's arrest because the arrest could not be hidden. When he heard about the arrest, he reached out to Courtney (who he knew from his coverage of the story in 2009). The problem - instead of checking into her story, he wrote the article with only her as a source. He had weeks to fact check, but he did not. He didn't call anyone at the Powell police dept. He didn't call anyone at OSU. He didn't call anyone in Zach's family or Courtney's family. He didn't call Zach. He did nothing. He got what he wanted from Courtney and he didn't want to fact check it - he wanted it all to be true, so it went straight to print.

I think people need to understand that you aren't defending Urban. Your condemning all parties involved for the part they played. All seem a little guilty.
This is the grey area of life.
How guilty were they? How can (and should) each be punished?
I don't know.

This whole thing stinks. The only reason that sounds plausible why this crap now came to light is because there is another scandal, at the OSU, concerning the wrestling team. (And some false allegations involving a certain public official.)

Everyone in this fiasco is a rat: all of them. Hard to decide which one needs to be tarred and feathered first.

Alabama fans being annoyed with Danny Kanell over using Saban/Alabama with the sole purpose to get attention is not any way equivalent to what you're saying about McMurphy.

You act like he was some no name reporter. He was one of ESPN's few national college football writers. Also back to the reason he doesn't have a new job (from Awful Announcing):

Brett McMurphy is still under contract with ESPN. He still gets paid by ESPN despite having been laid off over a year ago. His contract expires this fall, and we’ve been told (and it’s been reported) that once he isn’t under contract, he’ll land at Stadium.

some outlets have mentioned that OSU may apply some retroactive punishment like "time served" for Urban's administrative leave back to 8/1/18.

if that's the case, they should really hammer him and make him forfeit memories of Christmases past...maybe even tack on memories from a vacation or two...that'd set one heck of an example.

He probably already has a problem remembering the last couple of years at FL.

And one more thing, before I bow out.............

DV has occurred, on both sides of my family, since before I was born. And before my parents were born. And most likely before their parents were born. All of this stuff stayed behind closed doors, and we thought that was the wrong approach, as so much of it continued as long as it remained hidden.

Now, we have the opposite problem: a lot of men are still scum, but it has created an artificial class of victims. Not to belittle the true victims, but using that as weapon, to nuke a man's life, just because you are scorned, isn't any better.

A friend's son had his life darn near ruined, when the bitter ex-wife accused the ex-hubby of molesting their infant son. He was immediately booted out of the Navy, and ended up living on the streets, in some distant town, far away from his family. (Since that is where he was stationed, and left essentially penniless.) Eventually, he got hooked on drugs, etc.

Took this poor guy around 20 years to get his life turned back around, and become a productive citizen again. All because of a bitter woman, who wanted her pound of flesh.

Back to the case at hand.............who are the real victims as opposed to the fake ones, and which ones are really the rats? All of them seem to be the rats.

Or are they? I guess they are just victims of society.....................society is to blame.

(Or maybe they are all just a bunch of white suburban punks.)

You are a respected poster here, but you have had blinders on since this whole thing began.
Does every TideFans poster who agrees with my posts have on the same blinders?

I can't stop seeing the world through the lens of my bias, but neither can you or anyone else here. That doesn't make us "less". It makes us human.

So, you can be bitter about Kanell and I can't be bitter about McMurphy. Are you kidding me?

The two aren't comparable. That's what I'm saying.

First, you try to equate this to Phil Fulmer. Now, you want to say it's the same as Alabama fans being irritated at a guy for trolling.

For someone that wants punishment served, you sure are defensive about the whole thing.
