Wettest Game Ever Attended?

Okay, I'm bored, can't sleep, you know how it goes...

So, on the heels of an earlier post, what is the wettest game you have ever attended?

I have two nominations:

(1) The 1979 Alabama v. LSU game in Baton Rouge. Some of the younger guys might not remember that one, but it was an absolute monsoon. That was probably the most ridiculous playing environment I have ever seen. We had seats about 35 rows up, and you really could not tell what was going on when the play ran to the far side of the field. It was an extremely low-scoring affair because of the weather, and we won 3-0 after McElroy hit a pretty short field goal in the third quarter. We put up a ton of yards, but really just couldn't get any points because you couldn't hang onto the football; I remember there were a ton of turnovers by both sides. That was actually Charlie Mac's final game against Alabama, now that I think of it, and they were really about the only ones who got close to us that year. Anyway, I was still a relatively young kid at the time, and I remember it took me forever to dry out. I'll never make the mistake of going to an LSU game in Baton Rouge without a poncho after that experience. And another thing some of you older guys might remember, I'm pretty sure this was the game where Major Ogilvie wiped out Coach Bryant on the sidelines on a running play.

(2) 2001 Alabama v. Southern Miss. This was the week after we beat Auburn 31-7, and it was pretty big because we needed the win to get bowl eligible. I really had not planned on going because I had made the drive up to Jordan-Hare the week before, but I was in the area to visit the family and figured that I would go. Me and some friends parked, and it was flooding, and honestly it was just getting started. I remember thinking to myself, "If we lose this one, this is going to be the worst experience I've ever had at a 'Bama game." Fortunately we held on, but it was miserable. As a whole it wasn't as bad as the 1979 LSU game, but at times it was even worse, and it would come in as a close second. I bet the equipment guys had to throw out every uniform that was put on that day.

Ditto. This game was rescheduled because of 9/11 and was played on a Thursday night. I remember Jeff Kelly(a pretty good qb for USM) threw some of the strangest looking passes I've ever seen. The only time I've ever seen a field like this was in the Monday Night game between the Steelers and Dolphins a few months ago.

Yep, that is right. That game was actually twelve days after the Iron Bowl, and I remember everyone was scared to death that the layoff was going to have us going in with a big lull and that we would get beat and not make a bowl. Remember, that was the year after they embarrassed us 21-0 in the game that marked the end for Dubose, and they were a pretty darn good team in 2001 as well.

As miserable as the weather was, I was extremely relieved that we came out of there with a win.

Boy, memories:

1) 2001 Alabama-USM: The makeup game for the week that was wiped out by the Sept. 11 attacks. Also the last game my Dad ever saw in person. When the light tower went out the only thing I could think of was, "Oh, no, they're going to suspend play and I'm going to have to come back to this joint tomorrow." Towards the end, there was some drunk guy running up and down the bleachers in our section exhorting everyone to yell "Roll Tide" and looking at those of us who wouldn't in a threatening manner. My mother refers to this game as "the game where my underwear got soaked."

2) Iron Bowl, somewhere around '83: Alabama lost. I remember lightning hitting one of the light towers, and the drunk guy (must they always come out when it rains?) who puked about 10 seats to our left, then passed out in the puke puddle. The puddle didn't stay there long, though, because water was coming down the stadium steps like a waterfall.

3) Birmingham Stallions vs. Chicago Blitz, 1984? The Stallions had this barbershop quartet that sang the National Anthem. When they started singing, it was dry. The rain started in the middle of "By the Dawn's Early Light." By the time we could get our raincoats on, our hoods had filled with water. I've been wetter, but I've never in my life seen it rain that much, that quickly.

There were also several tornado warnings during that game. I remember sheets of rain falling and not stopping throughout the entire game.

1997 - Homecoming vs. LaTech.

They were using portable lights because of the stadium construction and it was difficult to see anything through the driving rain. To make matters worse, we lost.

If I remember correctly the Arkansas game was delayed about 30 minutes because of a severe thunderstorm warning.
And the Ole Miss game was suspended for about 30 minutes in the second half due to lightning.

I am 100% with Jess about the '83 Iron Bowl...it was the first game to come to mind. One thing he didn't mention were the Tornado Warnings! It was by far the wettest game I've attended because it rained 99% of the game. We actually bought cokes and drank them quickly so we could put our feet on the upside down cups because the water was over our shoes!

One funny story about that game. I attended it with two other good friends of mine and we had a little fire-water with us. Well, there was a little old lady sitting next to us who hadn't missed a game in like 60 years and by half time she was watching us make a beverage and she asked if we would mind making her a drink or two and obviously we did. It was hilarious because when I tell you she was 4 days older than God I'm not overstating it. She had, had enough of that rain and wanted to literally drown her sorrow. I believe she said it was the worst weather game she had attended.

One other thing was when they said there was a tornado warning and teams left the field, I don't remember a single fan leaving...we just sat their like dummies.

1997, Mississippi State at Alabama. It was wet and freezing. I have never been so miserable in my entire career as a Bama fan.

My brother and I made the trip from Mobile, leaving about 0430 because the game was a Lincoln Financial 1130 start.

We stopped at Faunsdale on the way home, and they had that big fireplace stoked. I still remember standing in front of that roaring fire, and shivering for an hour.

Your #1 was also my #1. I sat in the south end zone and watched Bama's line open gaping holes in the Tiger D, only to see Major Ogilvie slip down when he tried to cut upfield. But, hey . . . we won!

It was either 1989 or 1990 Bame at Vanderbilt.

It was the first game I ever went to. I was young, so it might not have been that wet. I just remember having to wear a poncho the whole game.

Gotta vote 2001 v. Southern Miss at Legion Field. Wasn't this a rescheduled game from the 9/11 tragedy? I had NO idea how much water could fall so quickly! There werent many people there, but we stayed the whole time and those of us who were there were rockin' and had a great time! I remember it at least wasn't very cold, thank goodness!

It was '83. I was sitting in the end zone with my brother. Unseasonably warm.
First time I'd ever heard the PA announcer warm about the weather. Tornado warnings all over Birmingham -- hell, the bands and cheerleaders left for a while.

When the rain came, it arrived on the trajectory of arrows. And it hit just as we got the wind heading into the 4th Quarter.

I don't know what was worse: Bo's two long TD runs, the weather, or the drunk behind me N-wording it up everytime Walter Lewis ran on the field.

Now that I think of it, the weather wasn't that bad.
