What Made You Become an Alabama Fan???

My former BIL was an "early adopter" - he bought a BW set (only kind) back in the late 40s, because he loved the Sat. night fights. I went over occasionally, but all I saw was a buncha dots, IOW, "snow." He swore he could make something of it. My parents' first set, around '55 was a 17" Emerson, although it probably weighed 200 lb. I think it ran around $500, which would probably be $2500 today...

My parents are UA alums, both grandmothers retired faculty, 1st game ever attended was '79 Sugar Bowl for the NC....I was 4 yrs old. Some things are just ingrained in you. My love for Lake Tuscaloosa (I live in Pensacola, but would take my grandparents lakehouse over a gulf view any day) and Bama football are 2 of those things. The electricity in the air at BDS when the Tide is rolling and Rammer Jammer when victory is ours.....can't describe it, or match it.

My parents didn't do football. I had been to games at both Alabama and Auburn, had friends going both places, wasn't sure where I was going, myself. What made up my mind was when Auburn ran the score up 40-0 on that pitiful 1958 team and its fired old coach. I hated Auburn for doing that, didn't want to be part of a school like that, and never yet have forgiven them. Didn't get over it even after we were running up the score on Auburn, a few years later.

Harry Gilmer, he was my first sports hero and as such, it was only natural that I would also be a BAMA fan. I devoured the sports section as soon as I learned to read and Harry Gilmer was quite the deal back then. I'd love to know just how many kids became BAMA fans because of Gilmer.

Along about that time I was also pretty fascinated by the HC up at Kentucky who had wrestled a bear as a youngster. Funny how things work out. :tongue::BigA::tongue:

You can count me among those who had Harry Gilmer for a hero. Thanks to the sport reels at the Saturday matinees a who bunch of kids grew up rolling out and trying to fire the jump pass. Of course I heard a lot about Bama from my parents too, and more than a few stories about Paul Bryant, Dixie Howell, Don Hutson, and others they had gone to school with.

Born to two Alabama grads. Moved to Tuscaloosa at three months old. Grew up there. Was in junior high, high school and college in the 1970s. Used to walk to the stadium to sell programs and get in free. Met Coach a couple of times. Graduated there myself.

Given that background, being an Alabama fan is as natural and as necessary as breathing.

I became an Alabama fan when living in Montgomery in the 70's and listening to the games on the radio. Me and my neihbors would go outside and run plays like we heard on the radio.....Good times!!!

Very long story... won't bore u w/details... just know this... my two children are now bama fans as well... really due to one person my Dad! He worshipped the Bear and I grew up with the same respect for Coach Bryant and the Tide!

Moved to Alabama from Delaware when my grandfather was diagnosed with cancer in the mid eighties. Wasn't really into football, but would've said I was an Eagles fan. Grew up in a household where my father is much more a basketball fan. Went to UA because they offered a full ride and stipend, vs my other choices: Yale, Michigan and GT.
In college I was more of an academic and (still can't believe this today) I didn't support football because I thought it was a distraction from academics. The key thing that did it were the young ladies that had to park their cars somewhere other than Tutwiler because of the RV's for the game. I attended two games throughout school and was interested, but because I never watched it before I didn't get it. My friends thought it strange and laughed, so I never got into it.
My first year of work, another new Bama grad and friend called me over to watch a game at his apartment. Iwent and he explained the game while we watched. Next thing you know, I would come home and buy a ticket outside the stadium. Now, I'm a TIDE PRIDE member and Alabama football ADDICT! :biggrin::BigA:

No, I wasn't born a Bama fan. I moved to Chattanooga from Europe in 1980. I used to watch football on TV. Whenever Tennessee played, I usually fell asleep on the coach. However, whenever I watched Bama I loved the games, I loved Coach Bryant stand by the goalpost before the game, I loved the tradition. Nuff said. I was hooked right there and then. I'll be a Bama fan until I die -- through thick and thin (too much thin lately) and now the Saban era is in full swing and the glory days are coming back

When I got my acceptance letter in summer 2006. I transferred in from junior college from an all-USC family. There is an Auburn aunt in my family that married into my family, but I was never influenced to even apply there.

I too was born a Bama fan. I was born in Druid City Hospital...my dad is a Bama alum and my grandmother was a faculty member at Bama as she worked in the Speech & Hearing Dept as well as the Athletic Dept. We lived with my grandmother and went to church with the Stallings and the Sandersons in the early 60's. She would keep Scott & Barry Sanderson when Mrs.Sanderson would go to some of the out of town games. I wanted to go to Bama and was accepted to Bama, but being the oldest of 6 kids my parents couldn't afford the out of state tuition when the time came so I went to Middle TN St. My youngest brother graduated from Bama about 4 yrs ago. We are a BAMA family with much distaste for the orange colors. I am proud to say my oldest childs first words were not momma or daddy, but ROLL TIDE!
