So the less experienced QB was better. My only real question that can be answered at A-Day, unless someone really screws up, is where is the ball when the QB starts scrambling. Will it be secured or in loaf of bread mode.

-Well from the analysis… it wasn’t clearly better. Best quarterback performance was said to be the third stringer. But it was with the 2’s and 3’s.

-Law was the best receiver.

-we got running backs for once

- linebackers seem more confident in where they line up

- d line would have had 7 sacks if they weren’t forced to stop at the quarterback.

Overall not very impressive day from the offense. Usually these limited scrimmages give you more of a sense of where things REALLY are, and are not as scripted for the fans as A day. From the analysis, if we are throwing it 40 times a game then we are behind unless these quarterbacks and receivers get better, or if this is just a bad day.

Can’t say I’m surprised. New OC and new QBs it’s going to take a while. They will get it done.

Not shocked by this. Steele knows the defense backwards and forwards and the QB’s have limited experience. Secondary is reasonably experienced with kool aid arnold and Moore. Reports on Downs have been positive as well.

I expect the defense to be better right now. Also Saban may have unleashed everything at the QB’s to see where they are so the coaches know what needs to happen next.

Well here is the thing… in 2014 the 2nd scrimmage was all about how great Sims was and how bad Kirby’s defense was. But the A day showed the opposite and the season proved the 2nd scrimmage was the correct Alabama. That was a new quarterback and a new coordinator

The non public scrimmages tend to have the coordinators go after one another and less script. The problem is that it appears at the moment that we are at the same point where we were last year when Bryce went down.

Again a lot can change but it’s not a good sign right now. I’m just happy that the defense will be better.

I hope the QB race doesn’t extend on into the season. If we get into the situation of one getting jerked because of a big mistake they will both play scare… not good.
Th QB race will be decided when they line up VS Texas . Mark it it down!

"“... I think we made progress. I think we made improvement. I think one of the things that’s always hard to judge when you’re playing against yourselves – what’s good for one team is not so good for the other. You’re playing against each other, so when one team makes a play, it’s good for that team but the other team maybe didn’t execute as well as they should...."

Reading between the lines a little but it sounds like either the defense may be a little too salty for the offense, which is possibly GREAT news about Steele and the defense OR the QBs regressed and were "allowed" to struggle a little in this scrimmage.

It could be after the good PR of the first scrimmage and the vid that circulated of JM throwing a nice pass a while back that CNS decided to allow Steele to throw the kitchen sink at them to bring them back down to reality.

Or, it's possible CNS decided to allow Reese to put a little more on the QBs to see how they'd handle it and they struggled somewhat.

It also sounds like there were mixed results too. The Bammer Hammer article I read sounded a little more positive about Saturday's scrimmage than the first post upthread. He noted they both threw TDs but that there were INTs also. I also saw a video last night released by the University and at least one TD was a rushing TD by TS. BH noted JM's arm is probably better than some think and TS's feet are better than some think.

But the team didnt solely rely on him. Remember, people considered AJ a game manager even though he was a pretty darn good college QB. “Game manager” does not mean mediocre at the position.
With all a due respect, Bennett was far more than a game manager.

He was nothing short of spectacular in all 4 playoff games.

I believe he was the MVP in all of them.

Was he surrounded by tremendous talent? For sure.

Have any of the QBs we’ve had who won a NC not been surrounded by spectacular talent?

And who among them did we solely rely upon? I honestly don’t remember that ever being the case.

I don’t understand the resistance to simply admitting that the guy was a top drawer college QB.

I think the whole point, whether AJ or Bennett, is no matter how good they are they need help to win it all.

Was Tua or Bryce more talented than AJM or Bennett? I think we'd all agree they were, but in the seasons where they started and played all year (not forgetting Tua to Smitty, but he didn't play as a starter that year) they didn't win a NC.

It takes a star at QB to win a NC, but he can't do it by himself without a team around him functioning at a very high level!

Trying to remember the last team to win the NC without an elite QB.

2014 OSU with Cardale Jones?

2011 Bama with AJ? (I believe AJ was elite the next year).

2009 Bama with McElroy?

It’s pretty much impossible anymore to win the NC without an elite QB because the game now requires a top level passer.

I would say Jacob Coker in 2015.

I think so much water will pass under the bridge between now and the UTw game.
I think a lot will depend upon film study, and, maybe most importantly, being on the same sheet of music with the receiver. If the receiver reads coverage and runs a post and the QB reads the same coverage and throws the out, that is a recipe for the kinds of disasters Saban sits a QB down for committing.
Fundamentals and talent are important, but a lot of the QB game is mental/prep. To all those young men, I would say, if you feel like you are behind now, then hit the film room and spend some time talking to receivers. The game ain't over.
