If we are talking Blake Bennett stuff it'll be an aberration from recent times. I may be wrong and only time will tell, but I believe we've entered an era under CNS where we will have always have better than average up to fantastic QB play every year.

Go back and look at the QB recruiting since about 2015 or so (around Tua's class). It's been pretty stellar every cycle. Ty Simpson was a 5 star. Sayin is a 5 star. We've got 4 star guys running deep into the depth chart!

I'm not going to worry until we have to start talking "game manager" descriptions and even then, QBs like Coker and AJ say hello with sparkling NCs rings on their hands.
And guys like Tua (as a starter) and Bryce never got one.

Van Dyke would make a good sports agent. He already knows how to sweeten the pot. I think all the rumbling is a raking in more for himself where he is. If they don’t ante up he may move on….. to Auburn.

Yes, of course, but the point of discussion is about developing capable QBs. Ironically, AJ and Coker (game manager type QBs as commonly described) won because of the parts around them and Tua and Bryce (while clearly more talented as QBs) didn't have the necessary support from the rest of the team to pull it off NC runs.

The answer of course is not to "go back to game manager QBs" but to continue to recruit and develop more dynamic QBs and then put the right kind of team support around them. Then it should become a "win win."

Not happening.

I was told by someone on another board with ties to school that they thought Simpson would step up by now, and he hasn't. Milroe continue to get better, but both are still making mistakes. IMO, If they haven't separated by now, maybe it's good thing for the team.....

Not doubting you OR your source but is this coming from someone who has seen the lack of progress OR are they getting from another source?

We will probably be a team that has to win with a strong running game and strong defense to begin the season while the QB's further develop and one takes the starting job. There is nothing inherently wrong with this seeing that is how most of our championship teams have functioned.

I agree 100 percent. We don't need QBs to win games for us this fall. We did that a lot the last 2 years. We need to take pressure off QBs and do what Georgia did with Bennett.

Again, it's not my source. But this is the person who I trust, based on what he sees and hears and how he interprets the situation. He always has been honest and see things both ways. He goes to scrimmages, and He has always been supportive of Milroe/Simpson and try not to be biased. He was the one that said Steele was likely to get the job while everyone was focused on other candidates.

No matter how creative Saban and his staff are, there simply isn't a way to replicate real game reps and the development that comes with them. I think both of these quarterbacks are super-talented QB's but haven't had enough game reps to develop them to even a serviceable D-1 SEC quarterback (ala Greg McElroy). The only way to get them there is going to be regular season game reps where they can make real-time mistakes, learn, and try again. We can only hope none of those mistakes puts two L's on the record before the season ends.

Run the football and play defense. Now that is a winning combination.

Yeah, I am agreeing with you. It was borderline criminal that neither of those guys got rings as starters. Tua especially. 🙂

I like the Van Dyke rumor about him transferring from Miami. It creates a little more pressure for the guys competing for QB1. Always good to see how players respond to added pressure. Don't want the guy from Miami but I like having the rumor floating around.

I dig what you are saying but don't think this is affecting any of our QBs on campus. These guys know what is at stake and cementing the QB1 role at UA is an achievement of a lifetime. All 4 dudes in this competition expect to be the next team leader and they would not be there if they didn't. Frankly, not sure there is a QB transfer at any school in the nation that could crack the top two in Fall camp.
