Why all the hate for the Manning family?

I grew up a big Saints fan, so I've always liked the Mannings, even though Eli went to Ole Miss. He's just about the only thing I've ever liked about Ole Miss.

Some Louisiana people don't like the Mannings because of the Ole Miss connection. LSU-Ole Miss has always been a hate/hate relationship. But, most in Louisiana like them because they are from New Orleans and Archie was a hero for the Saints when they didn't have many heroes.

NFL is a monopoly, not a free market, so I'm sure Bodhi would understand how market forces are not the same as simply skilled labor switching jobs. The draft is there to distribute talent fairly across the league, not cater to one player feeling he is more important than the game. As a Bama fan that is something we have always stressed-TEAM over individual selfishness.

As for Elway, a lot of people hated him for years for how he handled his draft. It is only lately after he won the sympathy vote for getting a ring in his twilight years that people actually started to like him.

for the record i don't really care about eli one way or another. but i don't like players dictating to the NFL where they should go and I hate rookie holdouts... but thats a different topic.
Thank you, and Amen!!!!

Hate is a strong word. I wouldn't say I hate the Mannings. Archie, God love him spent all those years with the Saints running for his life and ruined his knees. The man was SAVAGED, took lick after lick.

Peyton, now that's a different story. Sorry but the guy is a whiner who basically took part in a program to try to buy the Heisman. I've never seen a more rehearsed, staged and orchestrated Heisman campaign in my life. I seem to recall that UT spent close to a million dollars to try to make sure he won the Heisman. PM had handlers that told him what to say, where to go, what clothes to wear, how to wear his hair, etc. The leading of the band thing was pretty tacky.

The look on his face when he DIDN'T win the Heisman was priceless. Yes, he's a good QB but that doesn't mean I have to like him. Heck, Michael Vick is a good QB but a horrible person.

Eli, I don't have any opinion one way or the other with him.

I live in Mississippi and I see all three on TV at least 5 times a day, that's enough to hate anyone. Maybe not hate but very tiresome at least. I respect Archie and Payton for being great QBs but never dreamed Eli would do half as much as his big brother or dad. I'm sure not a fan of theirs.

The only problem I have with the Manning brothers is that in my opinion neither one of them has ever been hit. My position on that is unlikely to change uh, ever.

I'm reminded of the scene from the movie "Gardens of Stone" where the Gunnery Sergeant was given the chance to "tack" on a young PFC's stripes and simultaneously with either knocking the young soldiers arm off or at least disabling his use of it for life began crying and begging for a mulligan because he "missed" it. That's how I feel about the hit every time the Mannings are lowered gently to the turf.

That's not hate, is it? ;)

It's called "Capitalism and economics" (I'm sure Bodhi will agree!). Skilled labor can often make a choice in job selection. Elway did it, and so can Eli!

Eli wasn't that good in college. And if someone blames his "receivers" or his "O-line," I'll slap them right in the mouth. He was built up to be the messiah of quarterbacking. I've seen great quarterbacks have notable success without a supporting cast, and Eli couldn't do that. He has ridden his name and it panned out for him in the end.

and it was his "name" that directed the winning drive?

I guess even great boards like "Tidefans" have threads like this one periodically to keep it humble.

Never met any of them but have great respect for Archie and Peyton as QBs. I thought Eli was a good college QB but had my doubts about him taking his game to the pros. However, this year he made pretty dramatic improvement it seemed to me in his ability to take charge of his team on the field and execute. SB was a pretty good indicator of that. Proof will be can he follow up next year by performing at the same or greater level or sliding backward.

Never was an athelete but I think I have some sort of appreciation for the hard work all these guys have done to get themselves where they each are. Archie performed w/less than great supporting casts yet still recognized as a great qb. Archie was a great competitor and both Peyton and Eli seemed to have copied that part of his personality. While the Manning name and Archie's legacy has helped the brothers, its certainly no gaurantee of success though both have obtained it to a great degree. Got to respect that.

To expand on your point ...

It's more like captialism from an entertainment, big-picture perspective. The NFL is competing with other entities for exposure and the money from potential customers (fans). Certainly having games on Monday, Thursday and Saturday, in addition to Sunday (and Sunday night), is designed to do this, as well as crowd out rivals. Also, having a bye week and spreading out the season a little longer does the same thing. How will a fan spend their finite resourses? On baseball, football, basketball, etc.? Will they buy the NFL network? Will they attend games? Buy jerseys? Etc.

Within the NFL it's not a free market; it's a club. The League sets rules to benefit all members of the club (more money) as much as possible. The League decides how many teams can participate, how much money can be spent on players, how many players can be on a team, minimum age limitations for players, how to divide up revenues, etc. I was rooting for the Patriots, because, even with all the attempts by the League to equalize all teams -- keeping fan interest going as long as possible -- they were just plain better decision-makers than everyone else (at least for the first 18 games).

Now, certainly within that framework free agency has allowed more "free market" elements to benefit the best players (and their agents). Or, if you sign with the Redskins, you can be well past your prime and unable to play and still get a eight-figure signing bonus (see Deion Sanders).;)

Here's why I dislike Peyton Manning.

Peyton used to tell a story when he first left UT and went to Indy. He thought it was cute, but he eventually quite telling it, so I guess he clued in:

Peyton said that when he got to UT, he and a fellow Volunteer QB were invited by Cutcliffe to come up to the football complex and watch film together late on Sunday nights. All the doors would be locked, so Cutcliffe would prop open a door so Peyton and this other player could get in the building. Peyton said that he would get there first and close the door behind him, locking the other player out so that Peyton could get all the time alone with Cutcliffe. HE CHEATED HIS TEAMMATE TO GET AHEAD. I've heard him tell this more than once, and he thought that was a really cute story.

Now, that may be petty of me, but I've not been able to stomach Peyton, his daddy, or his brother since. That story revealed something to me about his character that no number of cutsie commercials can wash off.

Alot of people think Peyton is overrated, arragant, cocky, and overconfident, including me. There's just something about him that just gets under alot of people's skin. I don't have much of a problem with Eli.

And I wonder why some people don't like Archie...Could it be that every season he played in the NFL had a loosing record?

Did you watch the 2002 Alabama - Ole Miss game. Eli was brutalized.:biggrin2::BigA::biggrin2:

My Ole Miss wife says "Drew, MS." :D

Archie's from Drew. Peyton and Eli were born and raised in New Orleans and graduated from Newman High School. Archie and Olivia have lived in New Orleans since the 1970's. They live in the Garden District and are still local celebrities.

For me it is the way he Peyton led UT's band after their win against Bama. It is the fact that Peyton put his but and "bag" in a female trainers face then paid her off to keep it out of the courts then years latter he trashes her in a book. Class doesn't seem to be his thing.

AMEN! I was hoping someone else remembered all that. I have a friend who was a grad student and tutored some of the football players when Peytie-pie was there and knew him as well as the trainer he abused. It's all true. He's just downright classless. Not to mention when his team lost in the playoffs 2 or 3 years ago, he was on national television talking about "protection problems." You just don't do that.

And Cooper still resides there as well, actually a few houses down from my GF's parents...

BTW, some of you appear to be sore losers regarding the whole Peyton and Rocky Top cheer-- so what if he beat us and led his band in their fight song, that is the spoils of victory. Similar to when we play RJ.

Do u ever remember the score of Old Miss 33 Al. 32. Ill never forget it. Makes me sick today. Maybe u dont remember Peyton running around with that UT flag, stuck up in the air like it was the greatest thing on earth. Ill never forget it. Now Eli gets ready to be drafted, and he just to great to go to the lowly Chargers. He tells them he will never play a down for them and they had better not draft him. Things like that make me sick and Ill nerver forget it. None of them ever gave Al. a chance to even recruit them because they hate ALABAMA. (Ill never forget it.) That is why i hate the Mannings, and (Ill never forget it.) How about you?:mad2::mad2::mad2:
