Why does everyone hate us?

Can anyone answer this? I've lived in Texas (pray for me) and Louisiana recently and it seems that people just love to hate Alabama. It seems to me that people want to see us stay down. Why does the rest of the nation want to see Alabama suffer. It doesn't seem like people hate Auburn like that. I just don't get it. Maybe it's because we're a traditional powerhouse and people want to see us crumble. I'd like to hear opinions on this...does anyone know why the rest of the country hates Alabama fans?

Everyone will have their own reason(s) but IHMO it is due to the overwhelming success of the program. Not to mention that we are a traditional Southern powerhouse located in predominately rural state that lends itself to ridicule.

The Southern man is the only group in America where it is still socially acceptable to poke fun or ridicule.

DIXIE'S FOOTBALL PRIDE........CRIMSON TIDE .........ROLL TIDE!! ROLL TIDE!!

yes, some people hate us, but not everyone. even at ESPN we have supporters. But, you take some people's hate for us, mixed with our paranoia and you get issues.

When the proud warrior falls, the enemies he dominated in the past will come to kick him while he's down.

For a long time we handed it to the rest of college football, they're getting their "revenge" while were reeling for infractions and bad coaching decisions.

First off I don't think everyone hates us. Second we have received some bad press over the Shula thing from a press that has absolutely no idea what they are talking about (read Cecil Hurt's recent comments). Third I couldn't care less if people hate Bama. I hate Notre Dame. Why? Because I believe that they receive an undue amount of attention from the national media. Do I respect ND as a football program? You bet I do. People don't hate a school like Allbarn because they have no point of reference. The casual football fan thinks Allbarn is in Georgia just as they know Rutgers is somewhere in the Northeast or Marquette is in the midwest. They know nothing about the place other than they have had a fairly good football team the last few years. After that there is nothing else.

Have you talked to any LSU fans lately? Most LSU fans absolutely cannot stand anything about Auburn.

Everyone does not "hate us". It is a natural human tendancy that when a program of another school (that isn't yours) is down and has as many PR thiasco's as we've had to "pile on" and for us to be the topic of much negative conversation. We do the same thing with other schools. Let something pop up in the media about Tennessee, Miami, Auburn and we're all over it.

For many of the same reasons we "hate" Notre Dame. They are a traditional powerhouse with national appeal, like Alabama. People especially in the SEC were jealous when Coach Bryant was beating their collective brains out on a regular basis.

I watched the 1993 Sugar Bowl with a Georgia fan, and after the game he looked at me and said, "I'm jealous...Georgia should have been playing in this game." Well, no they shouldn't have. But I didn't say that to him, of course. He was a client of mine. :biggrin2:

One of the coolest things that happened this year to me was on the Monday before the Alabama/Hawaii game. I was standing outside the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York and a couple walked by my wife and me and the guy said, "Roll Tide!". He noticed my Alabama golf shirt. There are Alabama fans everywhere! So, everybody does NOT hate us.;)

As others have stated the success of the program has caused those we dominated to gloat. Sometimes success has it's negative side too. For example if you have a very successful year you tend to lose more players to the NFL and the next season may not be what you hoped it would be. Plus people like to shoot you down. Over the years we have made other team's seasons by them beating us.

I think Alabama is at a crossroads right now. In some ways we need to not be so infatuated with our past accomplishments and forge a new winning legacy. College football has changed a lot over the last 10 to 15 years....it's time to engage the culture as it is now and find a coach who can lead the program back to respectability. We may never see a coach that stays with the program over 10 years...with the pressures that head coaches have to live under and the constant scrutiny from the fans and media it is hard to maintain longevity.

As has been stated by many others, Alabama seems to be the equivalent to college football as the New York Yankees are to major league baseball...either love Alabama/Yankees or hate Alabama/Yankees...just the nature of the beast, I suppose...

Who cares what they think? Do you really care? Other peoples' opinions are something that you shouldn't let affect you in the least. It is difficult sometimes, but when you can tune it out it's a glorious thing.

First of all, my condolences. I lived in Houston for about 5 years and could NOT stand it. I hated that place. I didn't even look in the rear view mirror when I left... I was VERY happy to get back to the "south".

Secondly, I've lived in many places and travelled in a few more and most folks (outside of the south east) don't "Hate" us. Most seem to have some level of respect for the program since Bama usually maintains a level of class when we win. Many (especially the middle age crowd) compliment us on beating Miami's brains in during the 93 Sugar Bowl. Most people "hated" Miami more than us due to the LACK of respect for Miami.

Third, as far as not hating Auburn, most folks outside of the south couldn't tell you where Auburn is. I've heard anything from Georgia to Upstate New York. They are often surprised when I tell them it's "about 50 miles outside" Montgomery. Auburn is considered the 'underdog' program, so how do you hate the underdog? We all (mostly) pull for Indiana or Purdue when they play Notre Dame, because they are the "underdog" even when ND is having an awful year... Many folks (like me) hate ND because they get preferential treatment with mediocre teams (this year is a fine example).

These are my experiences and opinions. Roll Tide!

I agree with those who say "not everyone hates us"...(barnies & vomiteers are the two biggest groups of haters-but I hate them too...people outside of the SE don't even know where agbarn is)...I have met people all over the USA and let me tell you they recognize the Bama name and tradition...they may not root for us to win but they respect what our program has accomplished:
...tradition-excellence-winning-championships...(and that's where we need to get back too and quickly!!!)

Hey, don't get me wrong my friend. I sport my Bama attire and root for my team regardless of what others say. This thread was brought on mostly by something that some family and friends of mine did recently. We all picked our bowl winners. What a surprise that my father (A Bama alum) and myself and two other Bama fans were the only ones to pick Bama. Everyone else not only picked against us but emailed jokes about the state of our program. Then I started thinking to myself..."do they really THINK we're going to lose, or do they just WANT us to lose?" I work in a boys home helping troubled young men so this might not be the best example, but I also thought back to times when Alabama games were on TV over here and everyone wanting the Tide to lose except for the die-hard Alabama fans. I also thought back to when I lived in Louisiana and while...contrary to what someone said...I never heard anyone bad mouthing Aubarn...I did hear a lot of rejoicing when Bama lost to South Carolina or Arkansas or even Minnesota. I agree with those who said that people want to pounce on us because we're down right now...that definately seems to be what's going on...I really don't care what they think...I just wish they'd keep it to themselves...as always ROLL TIDE!!!:BigA:
