That certainly doesn't explain it of late, now does it.
Roman Emperor Caligula (bad role model I know, but bear with me) was known to say, “Oderint dum metuant.†Translation - let them hate while they fear. No one fears Alabama football anymore. Would that they did.
Not everyone, and not even every non-Tider, hates Alabama. However, two main factors account for the perception of those who feel otherwise:
1) Especially given our recent winning percentage, we take ourselves, I believe, more seriously than any other fandom in college football with the possible exception of Notre Dame's. The more seriously anyone takes himself, the more people will poke fun at him just to get under his all-too-thin-skin and, in the process, give him the impression that everyone hates him. This is especially true when that person is in trouble (which we are) and has a reputation for arrogance (which we do). Throw in some juicy public missteps (RR, fRan, Price, Shula-in-the-headlights, etc.) and those of a mind to add insult to injury usually will.
2) If you revere the history and tradition of college football teams (not individuals, mind you, but teams), there are really only three sine qua nons – Alabama, Notre Dame, and Meechigan, with USoCal, OU, NU, UTex, UTenn, PSU etc. on the outside looking in. So the average college football fan might be mainly indifferent to schools with recent success - say, Auburn (which, let’s face it, is really just Clemson minus the lake) - but will likely be well versed on us. In other words, while not everyone hates Alabama, very few are indifferent to us.
So, all other things being equal, in which position would you rather find yourself - (a) loved by many, respected by most, and hated by some (e.g., Alabama, ND, Meechigan); or (b) largely ignored by all but your own fan base and that of your most hated rival unless you are undefeated deep into the season (e.g., AU, aTm, Oregon, UofL, PSU, UTex, etc.)? I'm with Caligula on this one. Oderint dum metuant.
