What are y'all's thoughts on LSU's defense and offense? Stuff the box on defense and dare Muttonburger to best us? Run right at them with PA passes?

I'd expect us to run draws/ screens early to control their upfield rush. Then get into our power or zone blocking runs. On d, I think you nailed it. If we can control their running game with 7, they don't score, but we may have to put 8 or 9 in there.

We're going to make LSU one-dimensional team with their passing. We're going to force Mer to throw a lot. There's nothing to really discuss other to say that We're going to run lot of run plays that goes to the edges instead of between tackles. As far as passes, we'll just do screen, draw, andplay action. nothing crazy.

The game will be decided down in the trenches. You have the best O-line and the best D-line in the country going against each other, and who controls the game will have a great impact on the end result. LSU is probably the only team we will play that can hold our rushing game to a standstill, so much like the NCG the tempo of the game will be on the shoulders of AJ. If AJ can light it up, then I imagine we will continue to roll much like we have, if he caves under the pressure, or even has a mediocre night, then the game could be a lot closer than people think. In the end, I think we still win comfortably, but this will be the stiffest test we've had yet.

LSU's offense is a poor shade of ours. Poor QB play, and greater reliance on the running game has NOT equaled even the success in the running game we have. Their D can keep our O from scoring their usual 40, but their O is nowhere near the best offense we've gone against this year. I think their D will be on the field a LOT this coming weekend.

Alabama 30
LSU 6

LSU gets overlooked but they are still a team nobody really wants to play on a Saturday night in Tiger Stadium. They haven't looked good offensively with the absolute bottom coming against Florida in the Swamp. After not being able to do much right offensively in the Florida game, they have recovered in some regards. They have ran the ball well since then and mostly neutralized South Carolina's pass rush with quick throws.

Defensively, they have been incredibly stingy despite an offense that doesn't give them much wiggle room. It is even more impressive when you consider their LB corp is a M*A*S*H unit. Their talent on the DL allows them to disguise a lot of issues at linebacker but the "next guy up" haven't been outright liabilities so far. Their pass rush is the best in the nation, in my opinion, with a rotation of ends who have NFL futures. The interior guys hold up well and can affect the passer in their own right. Florida demonstrated some weaknesses against the power running game and they exploited the inexperience at linebacker with cutbacks, counters, and reverses.

Special teams have been a mixed bag much like our own specialists. Their coverage hasn't been terrible but their kicker has missed a few gimmes and Wing has had an inconsistent year both in regards to distances and airtime. As always, you have to be alert to the gadget play out of their special teams formations. They haven't done anything this season to my knowledge but this would be the ideal game for them to break tendencies and steal some yardage or points.

As for what this means for Alabama, I think the biggest concern is their physicality on offense - this being the first team that could really bludgeon at our front seven - and their extreme speed on defense. Alabama has struggled to stop speed rushers off the edge and LSU is the gold standard of edge rush. WR slip screens and off-tackle tailback screens will be a part of the recipe but Alabama will have to manufacture down field passing opportunities by moving the pocket. Running the ball will obviously be the key to limiting the number of looks LSU gets at our defense. The more opportunities they have with the ball, the more likely they are to call their 3 or 4 gadget plays they come into the game wanting to execute. Controlling the possession, cashing in on every scoring opportunity, and protecting the football are the three big keys for the offense. This means the kickers need to make the makable kicks but also, the staff may elect to punt on fringe distances and play field position for another scoring opportunity.

Defensively, Alabama has to eliminate the run game. Mettenburger has a bad tendency of throwing off-balance and on his back foot when he feels pressure. Stopping the run and forcing bad throws are the key. Keeping them off schedule will help discourage the gadget plays. They're gunning for us, so I half expect this to be the one game Mett shows technical development at the QB position. We have to fluster this guy and get in his head. Not dirty hit, but just let him know you're in the area. I think this guy has the potential to get hot with the home crowd behind him if he can make a few plays early.

I think it comes down to how our OL handles their speed rush on passing plays and whether or not AJ is close enough to 100% to play his normal game...

The mounting "nagging" injuries is what concerns me. Like Earle stated. Will AJ be able to play close enough to 100%? Cooper is banged up, Bell is banged up. The grind of the season is definitely showing. LSU has had two weeks to rest up, get some of their "minor" nicks an bruises healed. We haven't.

Two weeks doesn't heal the nicks and bruises that are between their ears ;)

They will be up for the game and so will we. We are a better team in just about every facet of the game and coaching, if not every one, than they are. I expect a tight game through the half with us leading 10 - 7 or 13 - 10, then we pull away in the second half and win 34-13

Saban on his show said both Cooper and McCarron could have continued to play. I think Saban used the lead to advantage and held them out to avoid compounding the injuries. We need the OL to play exceptional regardless of McCarron's health though. They could legitimately hurt McCarron if they don't.

I think we hold an H-back or TE in on the right side to help DJ on the speed rush against Minty (Minter?). That obviously limits part of our regular offense on that side, and that's the side we've usually used the TE. I'm not so worried about the left side...

IMHO, this is the type of game where stats, previous play just don't mean a heck of a lot. It will be a slug-fest, very physical game. But, to answer the question... LSU one dimensional offense, strong defense (we MUST protect AJ). Their speed rush concerns me.

RTR!!!!

I think that is why we saw Williams in the H-back role against State more....I liked the results for the most part.

Earl, could we see the TE/H-back give a chip block to help and flair out for that 5-6 yard pass we saw Smelley do in the NCG?

That play actually crossed my mind. It works well if they don't overload that side too much, which is fairly likely. I'm sure they've figured out that DJ is their best bet for getting to the QB...
