So ... Quarterbacks

My take - Kiffin's offense creates a lot of opportunities down the field. Sims was absolutely awesome at hitting those WRs when the opportunity arose - better than any college QB that I have seen in the past few years. Without a QB that can recognize those opportunities and make those throws, Kiffin's offense will never be as effective as it should. Kiffin is essentially wasted in an offense without a QB with this ability. You are better off with a gun slinger who can make those throws than a "safe" QB that can't while you have Kiffin, IMO.

Possibly, but what has Pruitt and UGA showed that makes you think they can stop Henry and drake. UGA's strength on offense is our strength on defense. Road games don't necessarily spell defeat.

I think we are looking too far into a passing scrimmage this past week, and overlooking the fact that we have played two decent to good teams while pretty much everyone else is playing scrubs. We will know who we are after this week so we don't need to press the panic button just yet

Lot of truth in this, I think. By Friday, we`ll probably have Ole Miss as a six headed monster against which we have little chance. Do I think our QB play is concerning? Yep, primarily in the area of JC`s decision making. We`ll see if the coaching staff can address that scheme wise and in the film room. Not saying UM can`t or won`t win, but they`ll be stepping up dramatically when it comes to the grade of athletes they`ll see Saturday night as opposed to who they`ve seen so far.

well, to be fair, this past weekend, the eeyores lost arky, the barn and tenn as teams who are going to manhandle us and uga is pitifully one-dimensional with a spotty d, so they have to put their eggs in the ole miss basket.

iirc, our first td to foster saturday was out of that play

You are correct as usual, damnit! I suppose I should have 'splained better. My point is that it looks like neither Coker nor Bateman are getting that pass out as quickly as Blake did and the blocking WRs are not sustaining their blocks, so far. That is a fairly long throw and if it does not arrive in a hurry a CB can easily pick it.

i did see a couple of iffy throws, but the biggest problem i saw with it was a couple of times the wr's whiffed on their blocks. should be correctable, i hope

Why can't Coker have a great game? I'd like to know.

He could. But based on his pattern for the two years he's been on campus, it's as just as likely that the Confused and Tentative Jake will appear. Given that this is the best defense he will have faced in his life, we have to at least consider the possibility that he will struggle. The same goes for the offensive line that is supposed to give him time to pass and our backs the room to run. And they have more of a track record for success than Jake.

Ole Miss will have 47 players, three managers and Col. Reb in the box to stop Henry and Drake. That leaves it to our inexperienced quarterback and our young receivers to make them pay. It's the biggest challenge of their careers, particularly Jake's.

My observation is that he fears he will overthrow so much that he underthrows, and then he fears he will overthrow so much that he overthrows. If he ever got the timing right then defenses wouldn't crowd the line. I think mullaney is our best safety valve so far this season, and until, if ever, Coker gets his timing right Mullaney's receptions are probably going to be the tell tell stats in our passing game.

I can't pretend to be an expert, but it appears that Jake is doing a good job with his reads about 70-80% of the time. The rest of the time, he gets caught up in the pressure or something and isn't processing information well enough to make the right decision. Within that 70-80% of the time, he makes some mediocre throws. I keep waiting to be wowed by his arm, and it never seems to happen. So far, his long-throw attempts have seemed miserable, but that flies in the face of all the information I've heard about his strengths, so I'm guessing it's a cognitive issue. I really hope he gets things settled down soon, because it feels like the coaches are doing everything they can to ensure he gets the job.

Bateman hasn't looked great during his time on the field either, although when they have him playing up-tempo, that seemed to give him slightly better rhythm. I'm sure I'm biased towards people who have patiently put in their time with the team, but I've liked what little I've seen from Morris.

After catching up on the thread I have two main observations and then my own opinions. Here goes.

Half of our fan base looks at Coker much like Blake last year. Through two games all he had proved was that there was enough talent around him to win games. His shortcomings were there, but even with those we'd likely be okay. Blake proved over the next few games that while he had deficiencies, he could win games with his arm if needed. Coker has that same opportunity. (I'm in this camp)

The other half think Coker might as well be Freddie Kitchens, Brian Burgdorf, Brandon Avalos, or Jimmy Barnes. There's no way we can win it with him, and Cooper Bateman is the obvious choice to be the starter.

To the first group I applaud, to the second I ask a question. What?

I'm not saying Jake has been a world beater by any means, and I am not trying at all to bash Cooper, but on the field this really hasn't been close to me. While JC hasn't been accurate with his deep ball yet, Bateman was having a hard time making the easy throws during live gameplay. While we weren't impressive at all Saturday, it looked like our offense ran better in the first half. Had Coker not had to deal with sub-par line play in the first half (my biggest concern), he'd have probably looked much better than he did.

Unless there's a big change, Coker is our guy for better or worse (I personally think better). I have faith that this season will be successful with him at the helm. We may not win a national championship, or even an SEC championship (the West is still stacked), but I think Coker has done about all he could to win the job. Now let him play without having to look over his shoulder.

I think the announcers summed Coker up, it is obvious when he is relaxed and when he isn't. There are certain pass plays he just not like to run no matter what the down and yardage is, then when they run what he knows he can lead a drive with, he does well. Take the long pass to OJ, not many qbs can put that on the money from 30+ yards away on a rope. If he can complete a few of those a game, it changes the progression of the game for him. Out of all the other qbs in the conf. I dont see anyone else I would trade Coker for right now. I think this kelly kid comes back to earth in a big way Saturday night with multiple picks and sacks.
