Game Thread: OFFICIAL POSTGAME THREAD - Bama vs. Hogs...

I admit OU was pretty sorry on that side of the ball, but we did not do much better yesterday—against one of our weakest opponents.

I guess for me it all boils down to this—all my life as an Alabama fan it’s been an accepted maxim that great/very good defense ultimately is necessary to win championships. It’s one that has worked out well for us. Why would we as fans abandon that now?
Because it appears we might just have to. Too much youth and too much coaching turnover might just be too much for this defense to overcome. Don’t forget we are missing two of our best pass rushers to injury right now. BUT.... we’ve got a once in a lifetime offense here. As Herm Edwards said, you play to win the game. It may be different but if we have to win with offense, I’m fine with it.

In the past we've never had an offense like we do now either. Do we sit Tua and those receivers because we've never scored this many points per game before? Just because something isn't quite what we're used to doesn't mean it's not good or we're not winning or the wheels are gonna fall off the wagon.

Sorry not sorry - I can't let this slide.

OU gave up 41 to a 1-11 Baylol last year.
OU gave up 52 to Oky Lite last year.
OU gave up 54 to UGA last year.

Comparing one game against a horrific defense from last season isn't going to cut it for me. You can stick to your guns, but I'm willing to bet that no one hangs 50+ on Bama this season.

Bama wasn't as good as they typically are yesterday - I agree completely. But find something more comparable that the virtually nonexistent OU D from 2017 to make the comparison if you must.

I think it's time to ban a troll. Buy that's just me.

Great defense wasn’t enough for us in 2016. New age of football. Elite offense with an average to above defenses are better than average offenses with elite defenses.

The stats I'm looking at show we're 9th in scoring defense, 18th in total defense, and 35th in pass defense. Not up to Bama standards but still a decent defense compared to the averages. The only possible playoff team that has a significant edge over us in defense stats right now would be Clemson.

Yep, and Saban has said as much many times.

Eeyores are gonna eeyore. Last year after Colorado St. there were several posts saying we didn’t have a national championship caliber defense [emoji849].

Yes, we need to improve but comparing our D to OU is ridiculous. They have a systemic, constant problem on D and have for years.

The bye week will be huge for this team. Time to get healthy and review film. Just win the next two games and get ready for the stretch run. Missouri will be a good challenge for down the road.

He isn’t a troll. He is just a little more pessimistic than most, but he adds a great deal to conversation otherwise the sunshine pumpers would be overally annoying.

Good points and I expect us to climb. We can be in the top 10 in total D by the end of the year. Playing UT and AU will help our averages, haha.

Ok the defense probably just had an off day, you know? Look I’ll bet they are just as in awe of Tua and the offense as we are. They’re probably in the defensive huddle like, did you see what they just did?

I agree that overall we are in a different universe when it comes to our D vs OU 2017. But when I look at yesterday as a snap shot and the way we are trending, I’m just concerned by what I’m seeing on that side of the ball.

Maybe you guys are right and we will just muscle our way to another NC outscoring everybody by 35 points. Fine, I’m ok with that. But, I’m just a traditionalist used to seeing it done the other way! I WILL say this—this team is FUN to watch!

This is probably the issue with most. This is definitely a different team than what we are used to. We just need to adapt to the changes.

I am very disappointed in the D. Arkansas scored MORE on Alabama than they did on COLORADO STATE and NORTH TEXAS. They had their season best against us.

The 2011 team, the best Alabama D in recent memory, gave up more points to Georgia Southern (FCS) than to anyone else all year, culminating in a shutout in the championship. Not saying this D is anything like that one, but just that this metric doesn't mean much.

Has there been a team that had an unstoppable offense coupled with a dominating defense?

I think it is hard to have both.

This. TOP is a big drop this year because we are throwing vs running. They are still forcing us to pass. We are getting huge leads early which allow us to teach lessons to the defense

I truly am not concerned even in the slightest. I’m fine winning by 40 even if they score 25.

We are mostly complaining not about scoring margin, but about style points.

What’s been the closest margin at halftime this year? 17? Three score margin at half? Most 20+
