The Perpetual Gun Control Thread

I’m not a gun person. I’ve never own, fired or even held a real gun so, I don’t understand people’s love for these things. In fact, I hate guns.

IMO, they all should be illegal. Would that solved things in the immediate future, no. It would take decades but, eventually this country would be safer and a better place. Would it stop all crime, of course not but, it would stop gun violence one day. Other countries with gun bans don’t have this type of constant gun violence.

I don’t want to hear the same old tired excuses about how it’s our culture, guns are a part of America, restricting gun sales doesn’t hurt the criminals, blah blah blah. I’m done entertaining any discussions with gun supporters who are resistant to gun law changes.

Their refusal to even entertain the thought of change is an endorsement of these mass shootings. They may not be tired of these killings but I am, it’s time to move because standing still isn’t working!

Or I’ll just continue posting this after each incident:

Just more collateral damage for the continued right to own guns. Don’t worry, the gun worshiping community will be sending their “thoughts and prayer” shortly.

I completely support you putting it out there. As a country we obviously will not get all the way to a total ban but we have to make progress on the distribution and use of semi-automatic weapons.

So both shooters were white, one we know posted some kind of manifesto that expressed his hatred for immigrants. He drove 10-11 hours from Allen, TX to commit this crime, why didn't he just find a mall near Dallas and open fire. Like CrimsonNagus said, I am tired of hearing about the 2nd Amendment protections, etc. This is a clear case, IMO, of domestic terrorism led by American racists. IIRC, trump said that people who owned AR-15 assault weapon used them for entertainment.

Saw this on reddit:

*”No way to prevent this”, says the only nation where this happens regularly *

Doesn’t everyone have a gun in Texas? So why didn’t they prevent this tragedy. Maybe we can stop that tired argument as well, “if more people were packing this could be prevented.” More guns will never prevent other guns from killing.

This is kind of unnerving...

TV said Texas is an open carry state. Said it wasn't unusual to see many people with guns while out shopping. Did that help here? Police said that made their job more difficult. "which one of the guys with the gun is the bad guy?"

Cloudflare CEO defends decision to drop website used by El Paso shooting suspect, calling it ‘lawless’

That is a small step in the right direction. From what I hear 8chan is a sewer of white-nationalist garbage and advocacy of violence.
Still, I want it to exist and for folks who post there to leave digital breadcrumbs so cops and arrest them when they advocate violence.

they will just find a new dark corner to hide in. My bet is they will make their way to VOAT for now

True. I just wish they could be forced onto some platform that would require them to leave some digital breadcrumbs so when one of these ignats posts something advocating violence, law enforcement knows where to find them.

I'm so with you on this.

My thing is though, is that the outlaws will still get away with the crimes because they will still get their hands on it. We are stuck no matter which way we turn.

I agree with this. There is a huge reservoir of illegal guns out there. Ask any LEO what percentage of guns used in routine crime are illegal and the average Joe will be shocked at the answer. Of course, most of the guns used in intra-family, and also mass shootings, are perfectly legal. On top of that, most of the shooters are not people who have come to the attention of either law enforcement or the mental health establishment. There was nothing new or helpful in the president's speech today...

a statement from the president of the american psychological association

link

“Routinely blaming mass shootings on mental illness is unfounded and stigmatizing. Research has shown that only a very small percentage of violent acts are committed by people who are diagnosed with, or in treatment for, mental illness. The rates of mental illness are roughly the same around the world, yet other countries are not experiencing these traumatic events as often as we face them. One critical factor is access to, and the lethality of, the weapons that are being used in these crimes. Adding racism, intolerance and bigotry to the mix is a recipe for disaster.

“If we want to address the gun violence that is tearing our country apart, we must keep our focus on finding evidence-based solutions. This includes restricting access to guns for people who are at risk for violence and working with psychologists and other experts to find solutions to the intolerance that is infecting our nation and the public dialogue.”
For people who are suffering distress in the aftermath of the shootings in Dayton and El Paso, APA offers a variety of resources, including:

That’s just so sad. It is WAY past time to start calling in these assault weapons. They have no purpose other than to kill citizens.

And they cause massive internal injury to those injured.

In a typical handgun injury, which I diagnose almost daily, a bullet leaves a laceration through an organ such as the liver. To a radiologist, it appears as a linear, thin, gray bullet track through the organ. There may be bleeding and some bullet fragments.
I was looking at a CT scan of one of the mass-shooting victims from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, who had been brought to the trauma center during my call shift. The organ looked like an overripe melon smashed by a sledgehammer, and was bleeding extensively. How could a gunshot wound have caused this much damage?

Agreed. I fear that there’s nothing that can be done at this point.

There will always be some provider willing to host them.
