Tua's Injury

"Cain told ESPN's Laura Rutledge that Tagovailoa will be on a partial weight-bearing recovery plan for six weeks and will be rehabbing daily in Tuscaloosa. In three months he will be able to begin athletic activity again, and by the spring should be ready to begin throwing."

Wow! That is so encouraging. We know he has the right attitude.

Medicine has advanced a lot in the last decade...………..its amazing what they can do nowadays

As I've said before, it was a nasty fracture, or they would have handled it at Andrews. It's a very uncommon football injury but a fairly common vehicular accident injury, particularly for the seatbelt optional gang. I thought it sort of odd that Cain kept insisting on complete recovery, while by his actions saying that he wouldn't touch the surgery with a ten foot pole. Not that I blame him for referring. He did what he should have...

I hope not just PR talk. Cain's comments seem to indicate not.

Its amazing how quick they get people rehabbing after these surgeries but I guess you have to so the stiffness can be kept to a minimum.

And prevent atrophy. Use it or lose it.

It certainly doesn't hurt when the patient is an elite athlete who is accustomed to putting in the necessary work to be successful.

That said, my 75-year old dad had a total hip replacement a few months ago and while he's not quote back to 100% (primarily due to the incision) he was up and walking a few hours after the surgery.

With my hip replacement (THR), it was up and walking the next day...

Going to show my age here. When I was in the clinic back in the day, they kept hip replacement patients in bed with and abductor pillow between their legs for 2-3 days post op and you didn’t dare allow them to get up.

Of course, we also hand processed (hand tanked) x-rays in a darkroom located in the OR too.

And before anyone says anything....no we didn’t “bleed” people to control hypertension in “my day”. I ain’t THAT old.....

The biggest thing we have learned over the years is why it is important to get people up and moving post-op, especially in the elderly post hip fracture.

The 1 year morality rate of someone age 65 or older post hip fracture is 27%. The two year rate is close to 50%.

The fracture and surgery doesn’t kill them. The complications association with loss of mobility and being bed ridden does. Infection, pneumonia among other issues set in.

The faster you get folks up and moving, the better off they will be.

I know first hand how Andrews and his team evaluate cases for the proper treatment. I had a life threatening situation at about the same age as Tua. I sought a second opinion from Dr. Andrews. He said he could fix the problem but it wasnt his specialty and his definition of specialty is the BEST option. Think about that for a minute... He pointed me to the best option which happened to be at Shands Hospital at UF where I received life preserving surgery and 99% mobility thereafter. The best only refer you to the best as I remember him saying because all they have is their reputations in the industry which makes total sense once you think about it.

Dr Andrews and his team are awesome. I have them to thank for having a functional left arm. When I was 15/16, I broke my arm in 4 places including the growth plate.
