Gary Danielson - Good Riddance

Danielson makes me miss announcers like Keith Jackson. I would have loved to have heard a "whoa nellie" yesterday. He seems to be impressed with himself but I am not. He loves to beat a dead horse into the ground. I will never forget when Cody blocked the Vols' field goal attempt in 2009, he kept saying there should have been a penalty because Cody took his helmet off even though the game was over.
What was so annoying yesterday was he was doing his penalty thing for every single positive Alabama play or score. He and Nessler went on for about 15min talking about an uncalled facemask on the kickoff return, as if it even mattered. At worst it would have been offsetting penalties and they would have had the ball on like the 15 instead of the 9 or whatever, because AU DID COMMIT a block in the back. He openly questioned if Burton stepped out of bounds on his TD for a solid 2min. He kept harping on defensive plays that he thought should have been penalties for entire series after the play was over. On our last TD he was asking if there was a flag on Bama. It was ridiculous. Meanwhile, any missed penalty that went Auburn’s way he quickly shut up about, like their illegal motion that they called offsides on Bama for and directly led to a TD. The man cannot just call a game, he has to insert himself into everything. About the only thing he questioned that went Auburn’s way was Burton’s (incomplete) catch on the sideline, but he went away from that quickly.

And I don’t even think he is biased against Alabama. He just wants to build up the underdog/call an upset. But yesterday was particularly bad.

I liked him. His analysis was usually accurate even when he was sharply critical. If he said, "your team blew it on that play," you only hated it because it was your team that blew it.

Exactly. Henceforth we'll roll dice with the likes of RGIII, Jesse Palmer or Brock Huard, or some other ESPN knucklehead.
The thing is, make your point and move on. Gary isn't capable.

I heard him on the radio a few years ago trying to justify his approach to play calling. In essence he said he tries to role-play being an advocate for the team that wins any given play. Ever since hearing that I have tried to listen for that and maybe that's what he thinks he's doing but it's not. As others have said, he looks for anything and everything that may have gone wrong.

Bama fans=Gary Danielson hates Bama.

Non Bama fans: Gary Danielson loves Bama.

So which is it?
I don't think that he hates any team. But he is still an ass who actively pulls for teams in games and officiates from the booth. He can do his job without doing either of those things. He CHOOSES not to do so. Every announcer has idiosyncrasies. This is his. And it drives fans crazy.

The fact that every fan base dislikes him tells you all that you need to know. He alienates everyone.

Gary is hard to listen to but if y'all haven't listened to RGIII call a game and think you will enjoy him more, you are going to be sadly mistaken. He is atrocious, and I mean another level atrocious.

But you are comparing a major national broadcaster to a fill in game guy. Gary is getting the biggest game of the week and producing this crap. Orvlosky, Mowins, Ware, and RGIII are guys that prove your game isn’t that big.

Is it just me, or is Gary Danielson one of the most annoying commentators in college football?

He has to question way too many plays….not just for Bama, but for both teams.

it’s like he’s got a plethora of conspiracy theories throughout the game, insight like no other. Not just Bama games, all games. Surprised he hasn’t seen the real Big Foot out on the field yet!
It’s definitely not just you! He’s insufferable. We celebrated that was the last time we have to hear him last night!

I know I'm a minority of one here, but I actually like him. Yeah, he does officiate from the booth (good line there). But I always learn something from him, and I like that.

I also agree that he's an equal-opportunity critic. That offends some fans. But I don't think he's biased because he criticizes everybody, and his points are usually (not always) legitimate. So even though I don't always agree, it doesn't bother me.
