Alabama QBs in 2024

Milroe improved steadily throughout the season this year. I think a lot of you are being too hard on Jalen. I expect he'll get even better this off season -- with coaching and drills.

Bama needs a better tougher OL. (Portal? Recruiting? Development? Any and/or all!)

That will fix a LOT of the issues.

Is a new, better , more hardnosed oline gonna fix his inability to read a defense or throw receivers open?
And Milroe supposedly worked with the receivers and a qb coach all last summer.

Seems like it's an opinion just like the ones you've been putting forth (and stated as if they are some kind of truth I might add.)

I'm starting to smell cow patties in your posts.

Then you may want to see an ENT because your sniffer is off a bit.
You can smell what you want to but JM wasn't and isn't our best option at QB.
Yes, it is my opinion just like your posts are yours.
We just don't happen to agree.

Any quarterback will benefit from an improved O-Line. Yes, it will help him read defenses better if he's not distracted by erratic snaps and immediate pressure resulting from blown assignments, etc.

Yea. He's been working on it. He's continuing to improve. Everyone, coaches teammates, everyone who has any access to JM within the program has commented on his transformation. And those are the folks who are making the decision. Not impatient entitled fans on Tidefans. You can hope and pray, and dream and grin, about TS or JS beating JM in the 2024 competition. That and $10 will get you a starbucks.

How about just not acting like a petulant jerk as a newbie on the site?

Is that too much to ask?

Again, starting to smell like a barnyard around here.

A newbie?
Talk about one acting petulant.
I've been on this board for years.
Not under the same screen name but for years.
And I guess disagreeing with you is your definition of petulant.
You just don't like my opinion(s), which, of course, is your right.
But don't dismiss somebody as someone who doesn't know things just because one does not brag about it.

And that's why CNS keeps calling, begging for you to join his staff. So you can provide this type of analysis with personnel decisions.

What an absurd statement! How many times have you see TS throw the ball? Couple dozen times during televised games? You think that's an adequate sample size? Their coaches watch them in practice every day for 2-3 years, spring camp, fall camp, closed scrimmages. But everyone on Tidefans is suddenly the foremost expert on QB evaluations.

Look, some of y'all are new, some have been here for a while - but the overall tenor of some of these posts isn't to our standards here on TF.com. If you cannot avoid making posts personal attacks you will be suspended. I'm not going to sit here and explain it to you, if you can't understand the vibe we've worked (literally) decades to build here, maybe this site isn't for you.

Treat other posters with respect and drop the animosity. If you think maybe you're crossing this line, you better rephrase your thoughts.

This isn't directed at any single poster, but tone it down or you're gone.

You also have to remember though…. Saban won’t throw anyone under the bus even if they deserve it. Saban rarely publicly reveals issues that are internal. He is the professional and the adult. There is a sharp contrast between how he handles interviews and how someone like Milroe handles interviews. You rarely know for sure what Saban what CNS is truly thinking about a situation even though there are many on here that think they do.

Point is that Saban isn’t going to stoop to the level of saying his coordinators, players, or the refs screwed up even if it is the truth. He always takes the blame and gives the glory to the players and staff. He is the polar opposite of Hugh Freeze and Steve Spurrier who have no qualms at telling everything to an open microphone about their program.
Don't forget Kirby Smart!

That's fine. I'll try to adjust my tone.

And you know this how?
He was allowed to play one half of football, in which he made some really good throws AND ran the ball well, so in reality was not really ever given a chance.
Say what you will but Simpson is absolutely a better passer and the better qb in the mental game.
But for whatever reason the team chosae lank instead of being able to read defenses and make good throws.
No. Coaches saw him daily in practice and scrimmages and he was found wanting. Do you actually believe he wasn't given a fair chance by Nick Saban?

I don't disagree at all that better blocking on the oline would help. That was particularly evident early on.
And yes, as I have said on other threads, JM has improved. No doubt about that.

However, if he cannot correct his footwork/mechanics, learn to read a defense and make throws over the middle/slants/screens, then all other teams will play us exactly like UM did and it won't matter how well our oline blocks.

I just don't see him being able to correct a career's worth of bad habits in one offseason.

If he does then great but I would bet my money elsewhere.

We were one good possession away from the win. An O line having a monster game instead of a disaster would absolutely have made the difference.

We were also a 4th and 31 miracle away from not being in the SEC Championship, too.
Again. The Oline had problems. Yes.
But when your qb can't see where pressure is coming from and adjust and throw passes that can back a defense off or check out of a pass play and go to a run play or can't simply read a defensive end on an RPO that doesn't have anything to do with oline.

If you still think that TS is a better QB than JM going into this season, then you are essentially second guessing CNS's decision after USF. A decision made after an extended QB competition running through the first three games of the regular season. In my view, that's a very arrogant stance to take considering that you are basing your opinion on a fraction of the information that is available to CNS. You don't attend practices, you don't have tape of closed door scrimmages, you just don't really have an objectively reasonable basis to question these types of coaching decisions. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion. I feel like I should be able to criticize dumb opinions (is "dumb" ok if it's not directed at anyone in particular? not trying to get suspended).

You asked whether erratic snaps impact the QB. Here's CNS's answer:

“And he was snapping the ball early sometimes and when we weren’t ready sometimes. That’s a huge issue for our quarterback.” Link

You asked whether protection impacts the QB. Here's CNS's answer:

"Once your quarterback starts getting affected a bit even though its not necessarily his fault completely, it's tough to play," Saban told McAfee. "We got to the point in the game where we didn't have a lot of confidence in being able to throw the ball, not because of our skill guys, but because of our inability to protect." Link

FWIW, I didn't start off being "petulant" -- but when you have the same uninformed response from 20 different people, none of which are providing any support for what they are saying, it gets extremally frustrating.

You are correct in that he was only given a half of football to show anything in a game that was already off the rails.
But in that half of football he led us to 2 TD drives and had a couple of good runs, threw passes (and completed them) that JM couldn't complete all season.
Thus, he was not really given a chance, in my opinion.

There are multiple flaws with the team, and improvement in ANY ONE OF THEM would have tilted the balance in an overtime game, including averagely decent snaps, QB reading defense better, checking down, and O-Line communication. Singling out any one thing to the exclusion of all others is silly.

Yeah, I am second guessing the QB decision.
No man is infallible or incapable of making a bad decision (see Pete Golding/BoB).

Snapping the ball when the QB isn't ready begs the question why the QB wasn't ready.
Neither you nor I know why and coach ain't saying so........

Look, if JM makes the adjustments he needs to make in the off season and can read a defense, etc when next season is here and he outright wins the qb battle then I'll be behind him 100%. But until he does I just can't see how we don't regress next season if he doesn't vastly improve on some things.

We can agree to disagree on this............🍻

Maybe and maybe not.
One thing is for sure. You hit a wide open receiver or two and kill the clock instead of missing the wide open receivers and we for sure win.
