Border thread part II

1. It appears so.

2. Now you do realize that even illegal immigrants convicted of a crime receive legal services, right? And if they can’t afford an attorney one will be appointed to them free of charge?

1. Then we'll just have to agree to disagree. I'm not buying that for one second.

2. Yes, all criminal proceedings allow for representation. However, most deportation proceedings are civil rather than criminal cases; the right to legal counsel often doesn’t apply.

I’m good with CHILDREN having free legal representation.

Then I don’t know why we are having this discussion or why anyone is calling doing just that insane.
Uh….because we interpreted the legislation differently. That’s the only point of contention that I’ve seen thus far. You think it only applies to minors and I do not. That’s…..pretty much it. 🤷‍♂️

I only think it because the bill says it.

The Oklahoma republican party censured Senator Lankford because he tried to get a border deal done.

Republicans are not serious about fixing any of the problems at the border.

Amid the ongoing immigration crisis, Oklahoma County Republicans on Saturday censured U.S. Sen. James Lankford for his work in crafting a bipartisan deal to secure the U.S.-Mexico border.

The overwhelming vote to censure the senior Republican senator came at a party convention in Oklahoma City attended by an estimated 225 members of the GOP.

The censure came a month after the border package died on the Senate floor.

Why did Lankford take up the bipartisan border bill?
House Republicans tapped Lankford to negotiate the bipartisan border deal.

Lankford and his fellow negotiators spent months on the package as the southern border buckled with immigrants.

...

Some members of the Oklahoma Republican Party met in January to censure Lankford over what they called his "open border deal." The state party's chair, Nathan Dahm, later said the meeting was illegal and the censure was not an official position of the Oklahoma GOP.

Oklahoma County GOP Chair Ken Warner told The Oklahoman that Saturday’s censure vote against Lankford was because of details in the border bill.

...

Lankford has complained the deal has been misunderstood.

"It would be absolutely absurd for me to agree to 5,000 people a day. This bill focuses on getting us to zero illegal crossings a day," he told Fox News in January. "This is not about letting 5,000 people in a day. ... This is set up for, if you have a rush of people coming at the border, the border closes down. No one gets in."

After the deal died, Lankford said from the Senate floor:

"What's been told has been false, day after day. I've had a few folks that have said, 'If I can't get everything, I want nothing.' I don't find most Americans are that way in their day-to-day life. Americans are ticked off that this is not resolved, and they expect us to get things done. So why don't we do that?"

More proof that the republican party has unfortunately become rotten to the core as a result of trump's doing.

Three undocumented immigrants from Guatemala are accused of forcing a woman into a vehicle and sexually battering her at two locations just west of Lake Worth Beach, the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

Over a dozen House Democrats voted with Republicans to back a resolution that denounced President Biden’s border policy on Tuesday, adding to pressure on the president to focus on a critical 2024 campaign issue.

Led by Rep. Monica De La Cruz (R-Texas), the measure accuses Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas of creating “the worst border security crisis in the Nation’s history,” and claims the president “systematically dismantled effective border security measures and interior immigration enforcement.”

It additionally says Biden “purposely violated United States immigration law,” and has operated an “open borders agenda.”

The resolution passed the House in a 226-193 vote, with 13 members not participating. A total of 14 Democrats voted to pass the measure.

The vote sends a message to the Biden administration as moderate Democrats increase pressure on the president to consider more strict border controls amid Congressional negotiations on border security that have come to a standstill.

The only takeaway I have from this: there are at least 14 vulnerable seats in November.

If I understand it correctly, the house has already passed HR 2, Secure The Border Act. Isn't this the one negotiated by Sen Lankford (R) and now trashed by trump and his sycophants? If so, why cant senate majority leader Schumer (D) get it through the US Senate? It may not be perfect but its vastly better than the situation we have now.

HR2 was, if I’m not mistaken, passed years ago and is not the Lankford bill.

(NewsNation) — As thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers living in Chicago-run migrant shelters are set to be evicted this weekend, a growing number of confirmed measles cases inside the city’s largest shelter has intensified the push for Mayor Brandon Johnson to again extend the deadline.

Seven measles cases have been confirmed at the shelter in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood since Friday, including three new cases Tuesday, the Chicago Department of Public Health said. At least one additional case has been reported outside the shelter.

I didn’t think they ever voted on the Lankford-Murphy- Synema bill? I missed that…
