Your credentials are impressive. Congrats, and I mean this.

The thing is, you are a moderator and this is a message board built for people to post things. Reading other poster's opinions, weighing them, and stating our own would seem to be the purpose of why we are here. Am I correct in saying this?

I do not think that Milroe has what it takes to be a great Alabama QB. Who was the last Tide QB that you would say that Milroe equals in performance? I really do like the kid, especially when he makes references to God. I am rooting for him and expect him to be named the starter.

Now, would I rather see Simpson start? Yes. Do I know as much as the Crimson Tide coaching staff? Of course not, but this is why I'm posting here instead of leading the Tide onto the field.

I hope that you are not taking this post as being combative, snide, or brusque. I appreciate being here. My coaching qualifications do not equal yours and I get this. My entire point is that we are all entitled to our respectful and respective opinions.

Based on your experience, do you think that yanking Milroe as the starter would have negative consequenses in the locker room from the players?

Peace.

ROLL TIDE 4EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Jalen Milroe has been super consistent. You know, he’s done a good job of just playing ball. He’s got that dual skill set, being able to run and throw. And now that we have enough things in where he can utilize all of that, you can see even the play-calling working around what he brings to the table. He’s tough to handle. He’s just so extremely fast. You think you have it bottled up and he just runs right around you. So he’s done a really good job." - Kalen DeBoer
Yanking Jalen looks to be the last thing DeBoer will do. I'm glad you're not the coach for sure.

You're right about him being super consistent in a lot of things: he has been super consistent in not being able to anticipate receivers, throw into tight windows, lead receivers, read coverage and pressure pre-snap, in not throwing over the middle or out routes and not taking off and running when protection starts to break down because he has held the ball too long waiting to hit the long ball that isn't open because of the deep safeties that know he's gonna throw deep the vast majority of the time.

That having been said, he may come out and blow all of us away at A-Day but until he lines up against an opposing team who is REALLY trying to confuse him and taking his deep ball away and putting pressure on him I will refrain from handing him the title of "next Alabama Great".

Thanks for sharing the quote.

I know CKD is praising JM, but I don't think your sharing this quote does any favors for pushing the idea that JM is healed of all his diseases.

All I hear when I read this is JM is basically a dynamic athlete who can escape the pocket and run when he chooses to do so.

What I'd rather hear him say is JM is growing as a drop back passer being able to read the defense, spread the ball around to his receivers by going thru progressions and accurately throw it into tight windows for tough completions that move the chains on 3rd down.

Let's face it. JM's reputation is someone who has big holes in the passing game that is only held together because he's a dynamic athlete. It may be determined JM's "game" is the best we have in the QB room and he's given the job again next fall. But, I think most of our fan base would prefer to see a QB who is more of a dynamic passer who can also run when needed. That seems to be the type of QB that CKD wants to run his offense with the most efficiency.

Outstanding post!

Did you ever wonder why Milroe, who is just so fast gets sacked so often? This will be his 4th season. When does his decision making start?

Yeah, no problem. I never claimed to have your great coaching skiils, nor your manners and intellectual prowess.

I fully expect JM to be the starter when we open the season against WKU. And I think he'll hold onto the starting job through the first couple of games. The Wisconsin game, and certainly the UGA game, will dictate if he remains QB1 or not.

So, I guess this debate will continue...

He has super fast straight-line speed. He can’t move laterally at all. A lot of his sacks were because he actually ran directly into the sack…

I think the CNS regime has molded us to think this. We actually aren't sure how CKD will do it.

Does he start JM cause he's the incumbent to see how he handles the offseason training and see if it's good enough to win games against Wisky and Georgia? That's what CNS would have done...probably 99% of the time.

But what does CKD do? Does he actually put the best QB (in his estimation) out there day 1 to see if he works with an idea that if he doesn't he can try another one or two or three??? Does he actually use the 1st couple of games as a true QB competition and let 2 or 3 guys have equal opportunities (as much as is possible in a game environment)?

I think that's just one of the things that makes this year so alluring. How will CKD do things that might differ from CNS?

CKD is definitely more of an offensive mind than Saban and I would argue one of the better offensive minds in college football. Instead of arguing back and forth about whether or not Milroe can read a defense, quickly process, etc., why don't we just hang on and wait for the man in charge to determine who gives Bama the best shot to win? Yes, I realize this is a fan forum and debate happens here. I think 82 pages is enough.

We will wait, but we will talk about it while we wait. :D

What really frustrated me last year was when JM had a wide open field in front of him and he steadfastly refused to take off running, even when it was obviously his best option. There was a photo last year from the end zone of Jalen having rolled out and there is a wide open field in front of him, not a defender in sight, and Jalen has the ball cocked back by his right ear looking to pass.
My football watching buddy who watches more NFL said, "It's like someone has ordered him never to take off running."
I think JM is incredibly dangerous running the ball. Not every play, but sometimes, "pull it down and run, young fella. You are crazy dangerous running the ball."

If the QB competition is close in camp I tend to think DeBoer will make the safer choice and stay with Milroe as the starter. Making a change is a gamble and he could face immediate criticism if it backfires. For one thing Milroe was Saban's choice and to make a change is sort of like indirectly saying that Saban played the wrong guy. TS will have to clearly show he's better. I don't think DeBoer will gamble early and risk facing backlash after just a few games.

Saban said the team chose Milroe. USF game gave some evidence of that. Would there have been a mutiny if he hadn't started Milroe? We'll never know. But they sure acted like it in that USF game....at least a good number of them did.

That's normally how it goes for a backup to replace the returning starter. If the competition is close, you normally go with the returning starter. I agree, IMO, Ty will have to show he is clearly better.

Jim Harbaugh said his players could see in his eyes he was confused and believes that Jalen Milroe is simply a "real polished" version of a QB buried on Michigan's depth chart. I didn't need Harbaugh's opinion to confirm that by this late point in the season. He certainly improved from the Texas game onward last season and should make substantial improvements going forward. He definitely has room for significant improvement.

Except for 2017.

Tua eviscerated the 1st and 2nd string D’s all spring, summer, and fall in 2017 and didn’t take over until 30 mins left in the season.

But yes *usually* the clearly better QB can take an incumbents job.

I’m honestly not sure what CKD will do if it’s close.

But if he thinks anyone in the room is even slightly better and chooses them he will earn my respect right off the bat for having the guts to make such a potentially controversial call.

QB isn’t the only position in recent years where the best guys were on the bench.

I mean Henry being Yeldon’s backup…lol

The Rideouts all came off the bench in 2017 as well as Najee.

Last year Justice already looked like he was clearly the most talented RB and he barely had any meaningful touches.

Sometimes the better player has been on the bench for inexplicable reasons.

One of the few "negatives" about CNS was his loyalty to starters over younger players who were more talented. You've named a few...there are others. This is/was "old time" football -- and that day is over. Now you either play the more talented person or they will leave -- and probably take others with them.

Nothing, repeat nothing, is nailed down anymore in life.

Saban wanted players to do the little things right as much as possible before they played. I think it was a valid philosophy but it's definitely not the only one or the only way to be successful. So I think some of the time the loyalty was really wanting the younger player who may be more talented to do specific things better. For example does the RB pass block, does he follow the right hole, etc.

I am curious to see where DeBoer lands on the spectrum though. I think what will be telling is how much playing time guys like Odom and maybe Ryan Williams get at WR
