Roster Management for 24-25

I just don’t know if I understand what anyone’s motivation is other than money. These kids want to provide for their families. They want to be fawned over. They want to be talked about.

but if there was one kid I thought was above that, it was this one. We may well lose everyone from last year. Every single one
Money is the root of all evil

If guys like Griffen really leave I can’t spend the energy to care anymore. College needs to take a pro route and do contracts ASAP.
At least with contracts they stay for a little while. I understand chasing money. How much is being thrown around? On3 has an NIL Tracker. 99% are “undisclosed”

Griffen is a big loss because he plays on both ends of the floor, he guards the other teams best perimeter player and can score as well, but think about it, the way college sports is now if you're thinking I just helped my team win a SEC championship last year and helped the team go to final four this year and you find out these new guys coming in will get more money than you, so what would you do? This is the college game now so we have to get use to it

Why would they get more money than a starter who might be the best player (depending who stays) on a high profile team? I get it might be a way to push for more money but could that not happen behind the scenes?

Is there any chance he's calling our bluff on NIL? We can find shooters but he an also finish at the rim and most importantly has developed into our best defensive player,. Might he come back like Jaden Shackleford did? What is the status of Bama's basketball NIL anyway. I heard Jeff Goodman say that Bama made the Final Four with only 900K of NIL money while most schools in the Big East are operating with 2 to 3 million for NIL?

While very disappointing, Griffen portalling out reminds us to appreciate a player when he’s playing for your team, but don’t get too attached. Oats is handy with the portal - you shop we shop is the new reality.

I wonder if he is testing the market more than anything. He may already know what the market is based on conversations from friends. I imagine these guys all have a pretty wide network because of AAU.

I just don’t get this??

RG was set up to have a major role next season on what will most likely be a Pre-Season Top 5 team.

Do kids just feel absolutely nothing for the schools they play for?

How do you wear a Crimson jersey for multiple seasons and just throw it in the trash like it’s nothing and walk away?

I’m about ready to just move on from College sports.

Dadgum Griffen!?!? Best lockdown defensive specialist we had too and so diverse at 6'6".

Like others said, I hope he's fishing for a better NIL deal, but man...what a distraction for a player I thought was a sure thing to come back.

But hey...if he's gone that's a spot for CNO to work his portal magic. If RG has a weakness it is his dribble drive and finish at the rim ability. If CNO finds a good defender, shooter and driver he could make this is plus move.

Money is the root of all evil
Actually it is “the love of money is the root of all evil” but your point still stands. When the desire for financial rewards outweighs all in terms of moral, ethical, and relational decisions, then problems arise. And the unfortunate aspect of the NIL world is, in many cases with 17-25 year olds, the ability to weigh out the value of those other factors is challenging. Much of it due to notion that money is where they find their identity.

I remember when my son was about 12-13 years old, I asked the question we most all ask at some point - “so what do you want to be when you grow up?” His reply “I want to be an attorney because they make a lot of money…”.
My response was (because I had been down that “money is the end all, be all” road) was “that is it? That is how and where you want to find your identity? The “money”’is the defining characteristic of who you are and what you will become? There is no problem in wanting to be successful both personally and financially. But there needs to be more to it than that. You can gain the whole world and lose your own soul in the process. Take it from your old man, because I know.”

As others have stated, if college athletics is going be constant fruit basket turnover particularly in basketball where 90% of the roster flips every year, it might be time for me to spend more time fishing or playing shuffleboard at Del Boca Vista.

Makes sense especially if UA has supposedly increased their NIL for basketball. Honestly, the type of player he's become over the last few years I'd think he deserves some sort of compensation for that. Can't believe I'm vouching for a player to get more money, but here we are.

This portal mess is only going to get worse. I was listening to Wimp speak on Mac and Cube yesterday, and he mentioned the NCAA is set to vote next week on unlimited transfers, and the ability to play immediately after transferring. This would theoretically mean that a player could play for one team in the Final Four, their team loses, and they transfer to the winning team, and play for the natty. If that passes, it's gonna get really ridiculous very quickly.

Immediately may mean before the season starts. But geez. Rec league ball. Crazy.

"Immediately" was my word, but that probably wasn't the best choice. I went back and listened to it. It was "anytime you wish". GMac asked him if, for example, Mark Sears could've transferred after last Saturday, and played for UCONN on Monday, and he said that's what they're gonna vote on.
