So looking at the roster, Sears, Nelson, Wrightsell all have one more year of eligibility

we have three guys coming and lose Pringle and Estrada. And Spears scholly is an unused one for this year.

So, the seats match up.

do we keep all 3?

IDK, but I'd love to have all 3 back. I'm terrible at understanding what NBA scouts think, but I really think Nelson could improve his stock for sure.

I also wonder how Sears' game translates to the NBA.

I've wondered the same. There is a sprinkling of players his height, but that's all...

Way too many guys leave for the NBA too early in college basketball then just sit on a bench or have to play oversees or G league so who really knows who will go. The last few years we have seen a Bediako, Davidson, Primo and Shackleford leave and basically none of them are playing in the league now. There was close to 100 college guys with eligibility still left last year that entered the draft.

Several years ago, I would get psyched up about some of the younger players that appeared to be between a "project" and a major contributor as a freshman. I would think that they would be a major player by their junior year. There are plenty of players that fall into this category when they enter college ball. Some of these players would transfer or maybe not pan out. Now, a larger number of these players will end up transferring.

There are several freshmen who I think will be getting better and better over the next couple of years and I hope they stick around. Dioubate, Walters, and Steveson all show promise.

Oats will bring in some recruits and some experienced transfers who may be better than these players when they arrive. That is when the transfer portal becomes attractive to them and they may not remain patient.

He might make more money playing college ball next year
I just hope that he doesn't go the JQ route to make that money....

I doubt we hang on to all 3. My guess is Sears will leave and perhaps Nelson even though Nelson definitely needs another year of SEC level basketball. Plus, we will almost assuredly have some unexpected transfers. Guys that didn't get to play as many minutes as they thought they should, guys that think they can make more NIL money somewhere else, etc. Cosby lights it up every time he's in the game but doesn't get to play much so he might decide to leave. Kris Parker redshirted this year due to an injury so who knows about him. Wague may feel like he would be a better fit somewhere else. However, if we can avoid any unpleasant surprised in that area, we would be absolutely LOADED next year!

Not everyone has to stay. It would be nice, but as long as we keep most of the core together, and hang onto a few of the younger guys, we're gonna be in position to make a legit final four run next year. We will look at the portal to replace the ones we lose, and Oats will get a few of the guys he wants, as he always does.

Griffen is the guy I most want to keep. He's continued to develop nicely this season. Year 3 could be his breakout.

I hope Griffen stays too. Already a legit cog in the machine!

Sears continues to impress me. He's listed at 6' 1" but I doubt he's that height, but he plays much bigger. He consistently gets off shots at the rim which look like they'd get sent into the 3rd row. He also is super strong and finishes a lot of and ones after big time contact. Anybody that is scoring 20+ as consistently as he does has some game that can't be ignored. If not for Konech at UT, he'd probably be a shoe in for SECPOTY.

A pattern has emerged with Sears. First half, dribble penetrate pass out of lane clogged, or layup if he has a path. A few ball rotation threes.

Second half, full spread out, all five can shoot, opens the lane enough to where he’s going to take 6-8 shots himself over the last 10 minutes of the game. Minimizes turnovers, and recollapses the paint freeing up wings for threes.

it’s an excellent strategy and has emerged since SEC play started.

If that is the strategy it's working.

I love how Sears lets the game come to him. He doesn't press but, as you note, always finishes big in the end.
Watch on Wednesday. The second half starting with about ten minutes left until about 3 minutes left, Sears takes over everything. He may dish it. But he takes most of the shots. Primarily down the lane. He dictates everything in that window.

somehow, I don’t think I’m articulating it correctly. Because I can’t quite find the right wording. There’s just something about that block of time where he just takes over when we have the lead.

And by that time, the defense is dog tired. And he always ends up, switched onto some slower person that he can accelerate past.

I sure hope they all come back. If Sears is not back, Oats will need to find a PG in the portal for sure.
Did Sears even have eligibility after this year? Doubt the leading or second leading scorer in SEC would come back though.
Does Estrada have eligibility after this year?

Estrada is done. Sears has the Covid year left.
This is the 1 NIL positive virtually no person talks about. All 3 will tests the waters until the end, but they also have cash coming in to stay. Nelson and Wrightsell would be best to stay. Sears is the wildcard, but I do think he got some very good advice last year and will this year also. One more year of being a 20+ guy and some much needed hype will secure him the first day call in the NBA.
If all 3 stay, next year will be the year.
