The running game... or lack thereof

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

Weve had trouble closing out games due to inability to run late. I dont think that will cut it forever, esp against the OSU’s of the world.
OSU will have not played a quality opponent until they get in the playoffs since the Texas game. Penn State was going to be there biggest challenge and we all know what has happened there. Historically speaking, this will be a big issue for them come playoff time.

Hill reminds me of a combo of Lacy and Yeldon. So much freaking potential!

Tell me about it! The kid has star written all over him and I hope he can start emerging and showing some of that star power in the second half of the season. If he can do that our offense would start getting close to being "unstoppable". Can you imagine Grubb calling plays with a running game that actually works?! LOL! The points and yards we could put up! I'm very excited about Hill.

The one SEC team they played and they could only muster 14 points in their own stadium. They've blown out everyone else. I think they're very good, but I don't think they're dominant like many "experts" think. It's no different than when we played Missouri and Tennessee and their offensive production game averages were through the roof and we held them to under half of their averages. I think the same thing would apply for OSU.

As I have said before, in this offense the lineman are taught to pass block so technically wise they all ready start back instead of a push, so I believe this has something to do with it
This! Plus add to the fact that our "worst" run plays seem to be RPO mesh handoffs, which are slow in developing, and I believe that is why our RBs often have to sidestep a defender in the backfield.

Our better run plays seem to be quick handoffs or quick pitches to the boundaries. These give our RBs a little more time to access the holes/running lanes and time to make an adjustment.

Tejas has proven to be abysmal on offense. Arch was 12/27 in their 16-13 OT win last weekend against... Kentucky. They really aren't making me think they are a very good team right now.

So far Arch has been a bust, imo. I know the analysts point to his offensive line but even when he has time to throw he's not very good or consistent. He'll make a good throw here and there, but other times his throws are off target and late.

I suspect that we lack the kind of athleticism needed to have truly mobile guards and tackles. Brailsford is the obvious example.

I expect if Grubb sticks around recruiting will answer your question:

I mean... Even last year I had to think that CKD had some coaching ability. Obviously it doesn't mean that you will be successful at the highest levels, but this year is going much closer to what I expected.

Nobody is going to produce another Saban regime in this era, but if we keep recruiting and building from where we are at now, we should be very good.

But... We are going to have to have some patience. I don't think every year is going to be perfect.

I think the answer to our defensive issues (outside of firing Wommack) is recruiting/portaling in better LB's and defensive tackles. Right now we just don't very good LB play and the DT's aren't as disruptive as they need to be. I think we need to get a little bigger at the DT position so we don't get pushed around by the bigger offensive lines and try to get back to getting LB's in here like the great ones under Saban. This staff seems to be on a roll with recruits so hopefully that will mean bringing in the most talented LB's and DT's.

Like this kid here who's currently committed to us. Granted, I have no idea if the staff plans on using him as a DE or inside as a DT. But his recruiting profile says "DL" not "EDGE" rusher. This kid is only 258 LBS and would have to put on 50 lbs just to get to 300 lbs. I hope they aren't wanting this kid to play DT because that is a major ask for him to put on that type of weight and then try to play at that weight when apparently he's naturally not that big.

6'4 260 in high school...he can easily put on 30-40 pounds. Our kids literally are fed prime ribs 3 times a day if they so choose. He weighs 260 and if he is like most high school kids in MS, he has a subpar weight program (especially compared to ours) and eats McDonalds almost every night for dinner.

To me the challenge would be can the kid learn to play at his optimal potential with that type of added weight? Some players can add 30-50 lbs and it not impact their play (quickness, explosiveness, etc) and then some they never can play with the added weight like they played without it. I know they don't grow on trees and we have to ultimately take what we can get. But I'd like for our HS DL recruits to at least already be in the 270's or heavier. I glanced over 2026 recruiting lists for Texas, Oregon, Ohio St, and UGA all of them have at least one DL'man recruit at 300 lbs. They do have others that fall into the 265 lbs-285 lbs as well. But I found it interesting that each team at least had one DL recruit that already was at 300 lbs. It doesn't mean he'll play, but it does mean they are paying attention to that component of the game.

watched a couple of highlights, and he was lined up as an edge in all of them. Probably like our 'bandits', where we list them as DL as the heavy edge guys versus the Wolf as the speed/lighter edge. He could likely develop into either depending on how his body reacts to training. Going to a true IDL spot would probably be a bigger challenge, like to stated.

Part of that is a result of the fact that this Bama defense, while good, has a tendency to give up a few obscenely long run plays. The run defense gives up short gain, short gain, short gain, boom 60 yard run.
That’s really my only issue with this defense. And the fact that it happens in every single game at least once, usually 2-4 times. Unreal.

Agreed, though they did pretty much dominate what I think is a decent to good OU team. Of course, caveat on the OU QB injury.
