Best OC/DCs at Bama

Since I was too young to really appreciate what these guys really did until I got into high school, my only real knowledge of our OC/DC's doesn't start until Curry's reign. So, since then:
On Offense: I liked Dubose's OC Neil Calloway because he had more plays/formations than any Bama OC I have seen and they beat a good Gators team not once but twice in '99. Plus' he's a former player under Coach Bryant.
A close Second was fRan's OC, Les Koenning. That 2000 teams developed a back bone against Auburn and pasted them at JH and the 2001 team dismantled LSU at Death Valley. His Option play and that play where the QB, usually Watts, would fake the pass and then hand the ball was a killer.
On Defense: Brother Bill.
I also really liked Karl Torbush but Joe Kines was the MAN.

Charlie Stubbs was the OC you are justly propping . :smile:

Calloway was the OC after Bruce "I'm a Dumba**" Arians. The offense still sputtered after that year, so Dubose brought in Charlie Stubbs to serve as "passing coordinator". In fact, Stubbs was functioning as the de facto OC, but Dubose didn't have the stones to demote Calloway, who was a friend. The offense flourished under Stubbs, leading to the SEC championship. The following year, though, Calloway tried to reassert his authority. As the season continued to disintegrate, Dubose continued to support Calloway, and Stubbs was left out in the cold.
The following year, Stubbs was up for the BYU HC job, but didn't get it--most people think that it was because of the looming NCAA investigation.

Stubbs all the way in '99 until dumbose put NC over his shoulder the following Spring . After that , CS told dumbose he should let Ivy call it back in 8/00 when dumbose forced a move to a lot of 2TE sets . Hence the name "dumbose" for destroying our excellent '99 offense prior to our '00 ucla trip/implosion/catastrophe .

Didn't DuBose have Stubbs & Ellis Johnson..?
I have heard that calloway was a major kink in the chain or am I confused.
I always thought that DuBose has some good coaches on his staff but obviously not across the board.
I think Stubbs was turned lose against Florida in the SEC game. I remeber Finebuam saying he talked to Stubbs prior to the game about Spurriers offense ..etc & Stubbs said something like that's OK we got a little for them also.

What's the criteria fo OC? Is it the sexiest, the most innovative or the most effective? If winning and championships are the standard, who did it better than Coach Mal Moore? I kow there are a lot of CMM haters out there, but as Yogi Berra once said "You could look it up." He seemed to please Coach Bryant and I don't know of a better authority than The Coach.

I've consistently heard that Calloway was a troublemaker on that staff too. Our offense flourished when Stubbs was allowed to run it, I too would put him right up there with Homer Smith. Bruce Arians was probably the worst OC we've had in recent memory.
On the D side, both Bill Oliver and Ken Donahue from the Bryant years would be at the top of my list. All the offense had to do most of the time was score 10-14 points and these guys would win the ballgame. The worst DC we've had that I recall would probably have to be Don Lindsey from the Curry years--some of the rag tag defenses we had under him back in the late eighties were absolutely atrocious.
Thanks, I didn't know the whole details, just a lot of hear-say from some buddies of mine that followed the mess from T-Town. I knew that Stubbs was in on alot of the playcalling during the 1999 season but I thought Calloway was the man to green light or change the play being called in because he was the actual OC. Also, there wasn't a whole lot of disputes between the 2 because Alexander was the bread winner. They used just enough of Zow's arm to keep all the DC's from completly stacking the box on every play although most of the pass plays were Stubbs handywork.
As for 2000 when the wheels fell off, I heard that Stubbs and Calloway butted heads often on how to fix the Offense and Dubose made his pact with Calloway since they were buds and Stubbs was out of the loop, which is about how you put it.
Tommy, I'd agree with Smilin' Ken Donohue. He & Brother Oliver are tied for me as DC.
Relatedly, I've always hated the bend-but-don't-break approach. I'd rather hammer the O & be prepared to give up the rare big play. But that's easy to say from the comfort of my seat...

Without question Mal Moore! There is simply no comparison as we won 4 or 5 NC with Mal as the OC. If you don't include total wins, sec titles and nc's how is this even a real question and Mal takes all three easily!
Now the DC is a different animal. Obviously Brother Oliver was great, but other than '92 we weren't a completely dominating DEFENSE...or not as much as we were under Torbush and then Kines from a ranking perspective. I'm not really sure who takes that category but I think I'm leaning toward Oliver just because of the NC and SEC titles.

I don't think Bruce Arians was a terrible OC. He took the blame for some plays that went terribly wrong such as the 4th down play vs Auburn in '97. Bruce and Danny Pearman became the fall guys for Mike DuBose. Bruce became a successful NFL assistant now the OC of the Pittsburg Steelers and Danny Pearman is still coaching TE and OT (8 years) at Virginia Tech. Danny Pearman is also the assistant Phillip Fullmer accused falsely of having an affair with a recruits mother. Fullmer apologized to Danny saying he knew it wasn't true when he said it.
