Weather thread, Part III

A while back, Mrs. Basket Case and I got caught in a heat wave in Prince Edward Island, Canada. It was a triple-whammy — not only was it hot by any standard, the sun was out making it feel even hotter. And the buildings there are built to retain heat….so if they didn’t have AC (and a lot didn’t), they were unbearable.

I just bought some motorcycle parts from a UK seller. We made the agreement yesterday - but he said it was so hot he was going fishing - so the transaction was actually finalized this morning.

Tahiti was very hot when I went there (it was December). Close to being too hot, in fact!

Of course, that's normal for the South Pacific.

I just had an exchange this afternoon with a friend living in Brussels, Scottish originally, but really a journalist. She's flipped days and nights and starts work at 10:30 PM. She said the high tomorrow there was 40C (104F)...
 
That morning heat - coming in from the East. My cat has breakfast and then goes outside. About 2 hours later she wants back in. Comes in and completely prone lays down on the LR rug....lol.

There's shade in the front in the afternoon......so she'll go out and sleep on the deck. I think the warmth feels good on her bones.

Their normal internal temperature is 100.5F to 102.5F, so our houses are actually cold for them. We keep two pet heating pads in our mud room for them, year-round. They are both asleep there now...

I wish the weather folks would give context on heat indices like they do for temperatures.

Not a flippin’ word about temps, but yelling 100+ degree heat indices from the highest mountain.

Five days of 93+ temps in late June / early July just isn’t that unusual in Alabama. Starting Saturday, the Tuscaloosa forecast goes to highs of 90, then the next few days 90, 83, 84, and 86.

To hear these folks, you’d think we’re in that Nicholas Cage movie, Knowing.

For the record, I’m not denying climate change. I’m just saying I’m getting worn out with the breathless warnings about heatstroke and pet care and all the rest when as long as you don’t do something stupid, it just isn’t that bad.

the constant reporting of wind chill and heat index is something that annoys the crap out of me.

I'm the opposite. I'm having to take mine for undisclosed reasons - it was 96.9. My wife is wearing short sleeves. I'm wearing a fleece shirt... :)

Also, blaming any single weather event on anthropogenic warming is not scientific. The trends and climate will see an upswing and this will likely result in more adverse weather events, but a single event or front isn't going to always represent warming. We need less freaking out which exhausts and confuses the greater issue of where we end up down the road.

And yeah, it was dawg hot in Bama growing up! Just like today.

One Decatur radio station used to run a contest to see who could name the first day the temps passed 100...
