Who's watching the World Cup?

Well they took away the red card, dude is good to go versus Belgium.

This is not going over very well in the international community based on what I am reading and articles I've seen linked on Reddit. It's just more evidence of the corruption in FIFA for them, especially since it has come to light that a certain politican got involved.

I see their point, but I am also a little biased. I disagreed with the red card anyway and I'm glad Balogun can now play. I don't like the idea of politicians from any country getting involved, but I guess politicians trying to influence FIFA is nothing new.

True. Those crying foul play over the reversal on the red card can pound sand. FIFA isnt the cleanest of orgs. There are well documented instances of them taking bribes from the Russians and Qataris in the past and there have been instances where red card penalties were voided in the past (1962 notably for a Brazilian player). Diplomatic pressure was applied I'm sure and I'm ok with that in this case: replay reviews for Balogun just didn't rise to the level of a red card.....I'm sorry the intent was not obvious on replay that he was trying to take out the Bosnian player......it was a bang-bang play.....it happens.

It's really not and I think it's legitimate to be upset over this. FIFA handled it so poorly and without any transparency.

However, I get to see Balogun play today so I don't really care lol

Hope I am wrong but losing our best striker is a nail in the coffin. The friendly loss to Belgium 5-2 in the lead up to the World Cup is telling of our chances but we also did not have Chris Richards back there to save our bacon. Richards is key to this team in my opinion. Even still, we may be outgunned in this next match with or without Balog
The striker is back. The crowd will be electric. I suspect a match full of suspense just like Mexico vs England.

All the host teams are out. We are the underdog no doubt about it. It will take our best effort and a lot of luck to get through. We can do it but man, tough assignment.

We were slight favorites some places even without Balogun

Leave it to soccer to have controversies more exciting than the gameplay.
Mex-England was pure bonkers. Nothing boring about it

You mean like the 2024 Alabama vs Oklahoma game? Or for that matter the selection of Alabama to play a 2011 rematch against LSU in one of the most boring games in the history of humanity. I mean, MY team won a national championship and it was a snooze fest.

That isn’t unique to soccer.

Yeah but that 2011 LSU rematch was not as boring as the most exciting soccer match of all time, whatever that would be.

It’s not going over well with many lifelong, diehard American fans either.

I’ve followed and supported the US Men since the days when almost no one in this country even knew we had a team (think players like Kyle Rote, Jr. and Ricky Davis) and this is an embarrassment.

Yes, it is true that FIFA is historically arguably the most corrupt international governing body in sports, which makes the corruption here all the more obvious.

It is simply (and inarguably) inappropriate for a head of state to put their thumb on the scale like this, but considering the character (or more appropriately lack thereof) of the two principals involved, it is not at all surprising.

Should he have gotten a red card?…Probably not.

Does that justify Trump’s inappropriate meddling (whether it was ultimately the reason for the change)? No.

Honest question.

You clearly really dislike the sport, so why feel the need to continually post negative stuff in a thread about the sport?
Soccer fanatics are low hanging fruit, like anime lovers.

I was reading an espn article about the reversal, their expert said that live action footage wasn’t used in the review and that could’ve made a difference during the game. He also mentioned that FIFA not giving a reason for the reversal makes it seem worse than it really is; that if FIFA just stated the review rules weren’t followed so we are overturning the red card, things would’ve gone over smoother.

Thoughts?
