2026 Midterms Discussion

Susan Collins may have just walked into the biggest political liability of her career.

This week’s ICE killing in Maine transformed immigration from a border issue into a hometown tragedy. The man killed was not the person agents were seeking, and the agents were masked, driving unmarked cars and not wearing body cameras, all the hallmarks of a gang trying to carjack you.

Now Collins owns the politics of it. As chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, she played a significant role in funding and expanding ICE.

Maine voters are rightly linking her to an agency associated with what looks more like a gang killing targeting nonwhite residents, with no accountability. The moderate brand that kept her in office for decades has unraveled.

I think she wins another term.

Unless Maine Democrats can nominate a decent challenger now that Platner's campaign has dissolved.

I mean, is it too hard to vet someone of rapey and sexual harassment allegations, Nazi tattoos, etc?

You’re probably right. The stubborn and hypocritical foolishness of keeping Platner as long as he appeared electable will likely cost the Democrats a winnable seat.

Politics is the most bizarre of human endeavors. Would you hire a rapey Nazi to do anything for you for any reason? Absolutely not! .... except represent me in Congress.

I can't even put that part in blue! And just to show that I'm not picking solely on rapey Nazis, I find nearly 100% of politicians in my lifetime to absolute clowns who I would never have any interaction with in any kind of market.

Strange how a senatorial candidate from Maine is held to a higher standard than the President of the United States.

That's not any more strange than Democrats screaming about "preserving democracy" and then replacing candidates no less than five times in the last 25 years for no other reason than they were trailing in the polls.

I'm reminded of George Carlin's standup, where he said that elections are to give you "the illusion of choice," and the removal of Platner is just the latest signal that he was a whole lot more right than folks want to admit.

Of course, in my world Trump would be UNDER a jail, and he absolutely does have some partisan enablers in the Republican Party.

I wonder if the SC US Senate race will become competative.

No.

A bunch of racists rejected the black Democrat when he ran against Graham in 2020 but those same racists turned right around and gave 62% of their votes to Tim Scott, who looks black in the pictures I see of him anyway.

When is the last time South Carolina actually had a competitive Senate race?

Fritz Hollings

I won't say it CAN'T happen, I just don't see it as likely.
Which is why I hope Nancy Mace will suddenly decide to become a missionary to Indonesia or something.

This is where Walsh, who IS a smart guy, becomes one of those imbeciles who thinks real-life politics is like in the movies, where someone is nine points behind, one single event happens, and all of a sudden the race goes to the scrappy underdog (or the experienced pol is left speechless with a loss on election night).

It's like the people who think that Howard Dean's scream - and ONLY that scream - is what destroyed his chances in 2004. No, he was ALREADY losing altitude and that accelerated it.

Now...it could be the first pebble in an avalanche?
Yes.

I just doubt it will be.

You didn't have to go to generic politicians. You could have veered to the rapey narcissist who currently sits in a tacky Oval Office (I know you didn't vote for him). Both are reprehensible and should be banished from occupying any sort of government office.

Yep. I was including man-baby in this sentence from above:

Well, probably not.

And may not lose by nine, either. Maine is a weird state to handicap. It's basically Oregon without the huge Portland vote determining the winner, so much so they even have a Portland. :)

I understand even long-term incumbents are not "undefeatable" - House Speaker Tom Foley went down in a stunner and Roth in Delaware in 2000 - but generally speaking if a long-term incumbent goes down, it's usually (not always) in the primary from an intraparty insurrection (a word I can't even use anymore, but you know what I mean).

we have 3 more months of increasingly stupid crap coming out of trump, so its hard to tell what's going to happen. on that note, he's about to fully inject himself into georgia's races, which should go pretty well

Apparently it's all about China, and the idiots and sycophants (not mutually exclusive) in his cabinet/service will be there to vouch for him.

I'm sitting here wanting to dispute your point and then I realize:
- Trump lost a Senate seat in ALABAMA
- he lost TWO in Georgia (one twice)
- he (seriously) lost Gillespie the Senate seat in VA
- his advocacy of Dr Oz is probably the only reason Fetterman is there now

On Wednesday, Fox News Chief Congressional Correspondent Chad Pergram asked Lummis if she believes Ossoff and Warnock were elected legitimately.

"In your mind, are Senators Ossoff and Warnock duly chosen and sworn?" Pergram asked.

The senator paused for several seconds.

"I don't know," she replied.

Watched a video this morning with Richard Engle who is now reporting for Sky News in addition to his own podcast. This morning he interviewed Robert Pape, The University of Chicago. If there is any accuracy to Pape's predictions. We are heading to boots on the ground in Iran in a "limited" war. Recall our other "limited wars".
Ultimately this is going to spin out of control and lead to a global energy crisis. All of Trump's machinations at home are going to appear insignificant when related to a significant economic recession . My interpretation!
