Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

Nothing new here. Pretty much what we all assumed. Just weird that CNS doesn't seem to mention Barnett to the media..

Here's the entire post from Low on ESPN's website:

For the third straight year, Alabama is looking for a new starting quarterback, and Nick Saban is content to let this competition play out the same way he did with the other two. "If we had to play today, it would probably be Cooper Bateman, but we don't have to play today," Saban told ESPN.com. A year ago exiting spring practice, Saban thought it would probably be David Cornwell, but Jake Coker wound up winning the job. "Just like last year, we're going to choose the guy who wins the team," Saban said. "Some of our younger guys have a high ceiling, but how long does that take to develop?" Of note, Saban said true freshman Jalen Hurts has been good enough this spring "to at least be in the conversation."

Re: Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

I think Saban knows the pulse and when he feels someone is getting too much expectation from the media then he just ignores him while in front of the media. He's always using the media one way or another to message to the fans or players.

It's really exciting to hear those remarks about Jalen Hurts from Coach Saban, because Coach Saban is the master when it comes to what he says to the media, he doesn't toot a players horn unless he's earned that praise & he's fast becoming one of the best players at his position..

I wouldn't be surprised to see Jalen earn playing time this year in a "Two Headed Monster" type offense this coming season..We could pull it off effectively with the sheer amount of talent we have & it would be college footballs worst nightmare come true trying to stop it..I understand it most likely won't happen, but, it's sure fun thinking about the possibilities & how much heartburn it would give DC's trying to gameplan against it..

I don't know. If Hurt continues to progress like he has this spring, I would expect to see him in mop up duty games this season and playing in extensive game against cupcake. Don't count out BB or Cornwell though. Hurt can be " no. 2" on depth, but still ends up redshirting. The fall camp is where we'll see a true measure of progress. That's around the time where they either struggle or excel. BB did well in spring, but struggled in fall. Same goes for Cornwell.

I do believe CNS is sending BB a message with silence. Read another site today where CNS reminded a reporter that a series that end with a kick is acceptable. He mentioned the loss to OM was because we had 6 turnovers. It's clear right now that priority #1 with the qbs is ball security and BB hasn't got the memo yet.

Yep. With our defense and running game there are only a couple games on the schedule where the QB has to take some risk to make a play. It shouldn't be SOP..

Great reminder...we were reading similar things about BB and Cornwell this time last year and Coker pretty much stunk it up, but we see how that all turned out.

Not this.

Maybe this. This was the situation AJ's redshirt freshman year.

Re: Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

I'll say this about Hurts, either he redshirts and is officially fourth on the depth chart or he starts. There is no middle ground. Anyone he passes on the depth chart would transfer, you don't give up a year of his eligibility and risk that unless he's going to be the guy. That is extremely unlikely.

We've seen impact redshirt freshman, so it's reasonable to think if things click for Barnett he could get out there. But, true freshman? I just don't see that happening. I do see a scenario in which Bateman wins the job and Hurts pushes him for it next year but Hurts on the field this year just seems so unrealistic.

Spot on. I think if Hurts was named the starter there would probably be multiple transfers..

Re: Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

Couple things: I think it's just a matter of time until we see a guy like Hurts or Barnett as a QB at Bama under CNS. The Blake Sims project was proof that CNS is willing to go dual threat, except we rarely employed BS's legs intentionally. Even Bateman fits this mold (although the big question about him is his arm). About the only guy on the roster that is more of a traditional, drop back guy is Cornwell.

Secondly, and related, is when this finally happens and we run an offense that employs the qbs legs a little more is the fact that the risk of qb injury increases exponentially so I hope the talk of qbs transfering is more in the minds of posters on a message board than it is in the minds of what will eventually be the 2nd and 3rd qb on our depth chart. Ohio State proved the need to be able to have reliable guys behind the starter. Hope the guys who don't start remember this. We've been extremely lucky with qb injuries since the Brodie Croyle debacle.

I'm curious what the big question is about the arm strength of Bateman. Through 2 scrimmages this year there have been no reports of Bateman having inadequate arm strength. Bateman was the #2 QB all last year and is the #1 QB right now. Do you think CNS would recruit a QB who couldn't make all the throws necessary to run the offense? Would CNS and CLK have Bateman as the #1 QB (AT THIS POINT) if he wasn't capable of making all the throws?

Re: Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

Bateman isn't a chump. He was a highly regarded prospect out of high school.

Re: Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

That's just the talk on the web and when you hear more about a qbs feet than arm it makes you wonder.

Seems like I've seen articles too that describe his arm talent as #4 among them too. If so, that doesn't mean he can't throw the football, but just that his arm talent maybe isn't as good as the others.

Re: Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

I agree that Jalen Hurts is a near must red-shirt this year.

It would truly be a waste to play him in some garbage time games when you have 3 quality QB's
with more experience on the roster.

I think it's probably just that he's not some physical freak that can throw an 80 yarder flat footed. He's plenty capable of succeeding in this program.

I think people are comparing him to the other qbs on our team, in which it might not be as a big of a problem as people think. I think the real concern is that Bateman has appeared to be the best qb in practice for the last two years according to reporters, some REC, and some praise by CNS, but for whatever reason you never see it on the field. But then again how many times have we seen a qb suddenly turn the corner after "meh" backup performances.

This is what I'm more concerned about. I think Bateman's in game decision making and performance is more of an issue that his arm strength. I don't think he would have made it this far if he had inadequate arm talent..

Re: Spring Practice Thread (Interviews, Press Conferences, Practice Reports)

Yep, the comparison is with the the other guys around him NOT with a noodle arm 8th grader who can't throw a five yard out pattern.

CF, that's the problem with being able to remember the OM game and how poorly we/he played. When he had his chance it was a pretty inferior performance and where he really failed was not keeping on the read option that would have allowed him to use the very best skill he seems to have...his speed.

Saturday's A-Day Game will factor into our impression and flame the debate even more but, overall, I still think the race will be decided next fall during the first four weeks of practice.
