Politics: 2020 Dem POTUS candidate catch all discussion thread

Small sample size. But jumping from unknown to 3rd place in an Iowa poll with no benefit of name recognition is pretty impressive.

Wow. Good for him. He's picking up faster than I thought he would. He's already starting to receive some backlash from those who think he is just another man and those who think he isn't progressive enough.

Really curious to see how his candidacy plays out.

The craziest thing about this is he only knows Norwegian because there was a book he wanted to read that was only in Norwegian. So, he learned Norwegian to read it. Who does that?
Well, I did it for a second vacation there because I got tired of not understanding it the first time around. (Hint: It's not that hard, if you know English and German.) I also read quite a few other languages...

Well here's your chance to help translate this sign if you can. Pic taken by my brother after he and his wife were evacuated from that cruise ship:

I heard a very brief sound bite from Buttigieg today regarding the Mueller report and findings....(paraphrasing) "it would be a mistake to continue expending energy in trying to get Trump rather than focusing on efforts to ensure something like this does not happen again."

Regardless of any opinion I may have on Trump - I REALLY admire his big picture thinking!

That comment alone puts his intelligence rating WAY above any of the other candidates.

He's really good at re-framing things. In a few interviews, he's made the point that Hillary allowed the 2016 campaign to became a battle of personalities rather than a battle of ideas. The "I'm With Her" slogan, for instance. He's not the only one saying this in the 2020 field, and I think Dems largely learned this in 2018, but he cautions that the next election message can't be, "Trump is bad, we have to remove him." Give something for people to vote for, not someone to vote against.

He and Warren are the only ones really pushing for the systemic changes I think we need. Warren's are more about economic systemic reform. His are more about democratic systemic reform, which he was hinting at in the comment you cite.

Oh, and at the risk of sounding like a complete cheerleader, I have to commend his fundraising strategy.

I've donated to him, so I'm on the mailing list. Earlier this month, he sent an email saying he wants to raise X amount of funds to establish Y and Z for his campaign, and the goal was to do so before the FEC reporting deadline at the end of March. Once he reached that goal, he sent another email thanking everyone and saying he doesn't need any more money right now. I had to read the email twice, because I've never seen a candidate's fundraising email say, "hey we met our goals, y'all are great; we're good for now and you don't need to donate any more."

It was refreshing. Every other email list I've seen has followed the strategy of, "we met the old goal, but here's a new crisis and please send more."

It's a poster for a handball tournament. I particularly like the last line - "It's your child playing handball - not you." Sounds like they have some of the same parent problems we have...

OK thank you, Earle. This makes sense because I believe it was a school they were taken to. I wonder if my brother understands any of that written on the sign...ha ha. I'll ask and let you know. I think they are home now - West Palm Beach.

Regarding your last comment on the last line of the sign - ain't it the truth, brother? For me, it's more like what I see posted on sports talk forums where so many express their opinion - and really get adamant (surprise surprise!) - at things that have nothing to do with what's in the best interest of the student athlete.

Not to be a cynic, but he could have reasons for wanting more donations to be delayed until the next quarter.

I didn't spell out each line. It's just the rules for the tournament, where to gather, etc. I learned Bokmål, the standard for the country and used mostly in the east. It has a strong resemblance to Danish. In the west, they speak Nynorsk, which despite the name is really older. I have a couple of Facebook Norwegian friends who live even west of Bergen. Their dialect is "Vestlandet," and it differs significantly from Nynorsk. I stretch my brain by using that, even though it's basically regarded as sort of a "country" dialect. I interpreted a German warning which a friend had taken a pic of, warning of CO when the stove was lit, in an old German bunker. I used the Nynorsk for the word "warning." She replied that, at last, I was "at home" in Nynorsk. Interesting phrase. I had an elderly German neighbor comment that I was "at home" in German... :)

Even Harry Enton is starting to come around.

Pete Buttigieg just got his best national poll so far

Former Vice President Joe Biden continues to lead the Democratic field in the Quinnipiac poll at 29%, with Sen. Bernie Sanders at 19%, former US Rep. Beto O'Rourke at 12% and Sen. Kamala Harris in fourth at 8%.

Buttigieg's standing lands him at fifth and tied with Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Buttigieg is ahead of both Sens. Cory Booker and Amy Klobuchar, who are each at 2%. In other words, the current mayor of South Bend, Indiana, is polling in the same area as a number of candidates who are regarded as having a legitimate chance of winning the Democratic nomination.
