Pope Francis dies at 88, one day after appearing in public on Easter Sunday.

He died on Monday morning, to clear any confusion.

Not nearly as famous as the Pope (obviously), but my brother (the newsman) awakened to this:

Senate President Dominick Ruggerio dies at 76 | WPRI.com

Senate President Dominick Ruggerio, a powerful figure in Rhode Island politics for decades, has died. He was 76.

Ruggerio’s death was confirmed by his office. He had been battling cancer and other ailments for over a year, and was hospitalized again last week. His death will trigger a contest to elect a new Senate president.

A North Providence Democrat, Ruggerio was the longest-serving member of the General Assembly. He had held one of the Senate’s top leadership posts for nearly a quarter-century, finally ascending to the job in 2017. Last fall he beat back a leadership challenge amid mounting concerns about his health.

As the bro noted: between the shot fired at Harvard Square's MBTA red line station yesterday, the Boston Marathon today, the Pope dying and the RI Senate President dying - "I'm in for one helluva long day."

Man, another musical legend gone...

A number of years ago - I remember a comment I made on this forum, in an earlier iteration of this thread, that "Bohemian Rhapsody" was the greatest song ever created in rock history. I only got blow back from 1 forum member - I wonder if he remembers.....;)

Probably not me, but now there are 2. Maybe, "Progressive Rock" with flowing robes, etc .... and that's maybe. Great song though! I think sometimes the sound can be "too clean". Not my cup of tea for rock, but I like some of it. Of course, I also think that New Orleans Jazz is better than Chicago Jazz.

I can't believe she was only 78.

The surf world is in mourning after a true surfing pioneer passed away. Hawaiian surfer, Lane Davey, has died from cancer. She was 55-years-old.

Lane was instrumental in pushing women’s surfing in heavy, Hawaiian waves, notably at Pipeline. But was also an innovator when it came to functional women’s swimwear and so much more.

The news was announced on Instagram by Lane’s husband and legendary surf photographer Sean Davey.

“I lost my best friend early this morning. Lane and I were married for almost 30 beautiful years together,” the post reads. “In 2023, Laneski was diagnosed with stage 4 metastasized cancer and given just 2 months to live. Straight away she got to work, fighting this horrible affliction with every fiber of her being.

She threw everything at it including the proverbial kitchen sink, along the way enduring 5 serious operations that left her grossly disfigured. I’ve never seen anyone fight so hard to live. Two years down the line and she finally succumbed to the cancer, while still very much fighting the good fight. Lane fought this like a warrior.

Two-time Super Bowl winner who played a season in MLB dead at 84

Tom Brown, a two-sport athlete who made a crucial play to secure an NFL title for the Green Bay Packers in 1966, has died at the age of 84. Brown's death was announced by the Packers organization as well as his alma mater, the University of Maryland. The Packers revealed that he died last week.

Brown was part of Green Bay's three straight NFL title-winning teams from 1965-67 under Lombardi, starting in the secondary and playing a key role on one of the most important plays during that dynasty.

With the Packers protecting a 34-27 lead in the final minute of the 1966 NFL title game, Dallas drove down to the 2-yard line with a chance to tie the game. But on fourth down, Don Meredith's desperation pass was intercepted by Brown in the back of the end zone to seal the win. The Packers went on to win the first Super Bowl two weeks later against Kansas City.
