Another QB Recruit?

After seeing our qb issue's this year it might not be a bad idea to get a 2nd qb. Everybody talks about not playing the younger guys but OU has done pretty good with a freshman qb this year. If we can get one that can adapt to the system we might be better off using a freshman than facing another year like this one at the qb spot. The rest of the team has shown improvement ( the O. Line was also getting better until a few injuries and bookgate came along) but the qb position has gotten worse as the year went on. That decision will have to be made in the spring or fall practices.

Like I said, even when he has plenty of time he still doesn't look past his first or second target.

Again, I can understand the whole part about not having enough time to go through a progression, that's understandable and forgivable, but he's not doing it regardless of how much time he has and that's just not going to cut it against good defenses.

Maybe UT doesn't have a good defense but JPW was doing a terrific job going thru him progressions and hitting 2nd or 3rd receivers......even did pretty well in the LSU game (fumble excepted).
It might help JPW to watch a series, or two, when he is clearly shook up.
Of course, an inexperienced backup could get us in an even bigger hole if put under the same pressure.

Good points, but I don't think the above is entirely accurate. Marve was primarily a fan of Shula rather than Alabama and when Shula left, Marve really wasn't interested in Alabama any longer.

When Saban became the head coach, Marve still continued to take visits and rave about his visit to Miami so Saban employed the "you shop, we shop" approach and started recruiting Fanuzzi.

Marve and Fanuzzi basically traded places as Fanuzzi was initially a Miami commit and Marve ended up at Miami.

I am pretty sure in the long run it will be proven that Bama got the better end of that deal. He sure looks like he fits in better with the "U" anyway. Not mentioned in the story below is that Marve was violating team curfew and he was not taken to jail when he was arrested. lol

UM freshman QB Marve arrested
Marve was charged with resisting arrest without violence and criminal mischief -- both misdemeanors. He signed a promise to appear in court and was given a ride home by UM officials. Marve practiced with the team Thursday.

UM issued a short statement Saturday in connection with Marve's arrest.

''The University and the athletic department are helping Marve with his issues. Any subsequent discipline will be handled by Coach [Randy] Shannon,'' the statement said.

Well I somewhat disagree with that, I mean D.J. alone had about half the yards that JPW threw for that day. I guess I should have said that way more often than not he does not look past his first or second read. I do tend to agree that either of our other QBs probably wouldn't do much better under certain circumstances but at some point I have trouble believing that they could do much worse honestly, this past Saturday being one of those cases.

It makes you wonder a little. Our staff either must have very little confidence in McElroy and Fanuzzi or they're simply not up to snuff yet (playbook wise) because it is very puzzling as to why JPW is allowed to stay in games where it is obvious he needs to be relieved. I'll hold out hope that it's still an adjustment to the new offense but his up and down inconsistent play has me worried, and not just for the remainder of this year. Here's to hoping that Star comes in ready to go from the get go and that our current QBs all improve between now and next season! :BigA:
This causes me some serious head scratching........& I DON'T have either dandruff, OR lice!! ;) :biggrin2:
One thing to remember is that Fanuzzi is a Saban recruit. He passed on Marve to pursue Fanuzzi.

I think Fanuzzi hasn't played simply because he is a Freshmen behind an established (maybe not great, but decent) Junior quarterback and what most would assume to be a decent back-up.

I look for Fanuzzi to be a factor next year over McElroy - Fanuzzi has a better arm and appears to be pretty mobile, and going back to my original point - He is a Saban recruit.
Even considering this is true, I STILL don't get burning Fanuzzi's 'shirt for no "apparent" reason. Brings on more of the afore mentioned head scratching........:PDT_Aliboronz_27: :PDT_ow: mixed in with a large dose of frustration..........:banghead:

GM- knows the playbook, knows how to read D's, throws take way too long to get there, if they get there. Have heard it described as the playbook shrinks to 1/3 of what it is because of that.

NF- might have stronger arm than JPW, but is a true freshman (you can guess how that related to the playbook/reading D's)

Sure hope Star Jackson comes in ready to play.

How could Coach Shula and Coach Leach (who wanted GM badly at Texas Tech) both have missed such a serious arm strength issue?

A. Texas Tech QB's don't need strong arms, just farely accurate ones

B. GM's stats alone would draw D1 offers

C. Mike Shula obviously didn't put a premium on arm strength.
The only two QB's that were his are JPW and GM, plus a myriad of un-
named backups/walk-ons

True, but I'm not really talking about whether he has a cannon or not. If GM's lack of arm strength eliminates half the Bama playbook compared to JPW (who as you noted is not known for arm strength himself) ... that's a lot more serious than not having a cannon. Its hard to see how that's a D-1 arm at all.

Well guess what? Scouts.com has one of his "needs improvement" as ARM STRENGTH. Go figure.

Yeah ... if GM has serious arm strength issues ... and JPW is self-destructing out there ... I'm not sure why we're not making a big effort to sign a second QB in this class ... "room" or no room.

Not really second guessing the staff ... I'm sure they have method to their madness. Maybe they know that Fanuzzi is the second coming. :)

1) Has Fanuzzi played at all this year?

2) I just find it hard to see any true freshman coming in and taking the starting role at an SEC school (Tebow excluded). I just can't imagine Star Jackson doing it. That makes me question if a JUCO QB may be an option.

No disrespect intended, but I just don't see why some think JPW's arm strength is questionable. I think, at times he attempts to put "touch" on the ball that may be misconstrued as a weak arm, but when he wants to, he can really put some heat on the ball. Throwing the out pattern is, IMO, one of his strengths........takes a lot of arm to do that.

I know there is alot of discussion about the arm strength issues with JPW, GM and even SJ, but not EVERY sucessful QB has a cannon of an arm. There are lots of starting QB's in college and the NFL that doesn't have Brett Favre or John Elway type arm strength, but they make up for it by making sound decisions even under pressure.

The way I see it there are very different levels of arm strength:

Really bad - they rely solely on timing and well run routes (see Rick Clausen)

Medicore - rely a lot on timing, but can throw on a line. Out routes can be very dangerous, as well as throwing off balance (see JPW/GM)

Good arms - have all the throws, can throw off balance with strength, but cannot quite squeeze balls into tight spaces (see Eric Ainge)

Great Arms - whether they throw off balance or on the run it looks like they were standing still (see Jemarcus Russell)

THe fact is that no matter your arm, you can make it all the way to THe League. Look at Chad Pennington. The difference is made up in mobility or intellegence. I would say that Star Jackson has both of those qualities, and looking at film of him has a good arm that will get better with strength and conditioning. The limited amount of GM footage leaves, IMO, a lot to be desired - but that is certainly just my opinion (and more than likely it's a bad one:biggrin2:)
