JessN: Assistant coach hiring tracker...

I don't how people don't understand that it's going to be the opposite of what we are used too. Saban no matter who the DC was it was Saban's defense. Now it will DeBoer's offense no matter who the OC is.
True, but Golding still managed to waste many great teams. I get that this is DeBoer's offense, and that he will be heavily involved. But will he actually call the plays? If so, I am not worried about that. If not, then Sheridan is a risk.

Let's see how it goes.

I decided to do a deeper dive, starting back when he was Leach's OL coach at Wazzu. The findings were interesting.

Per CFBStats com

Washington State without Mason Miller
2016: 29 sacks allowed - 82nd nationally
2017: 44 sacks allowed-- 126th nationally

Washington State with Mason Miller
2018: 13 sacks allowed - 8th nationally
2019: 20 sacks allowed- 28th nationally

Mississippi State with Mason Miller
2020: 34 sacks allowed - 120th nationally
2021: 34 sacks allowed - 97th nationally
2022: 26 sacks allowed - 59th nationally

I'm not sure what happened the first two years at Mississippi State. Maybe they just had to get the right guys in there. Other than that, his offensive lines have been solid in that category ,all things considered. Then there's also the vast improvement Washington State's o line made from the year before he got there. This dude took over and they had 31 fewer sacks than the year before lol.
Because of Covid, MSU had only 40+ players for multiple games I think in 2020. Leech never made excuses - I was very impressed with how they played in spite of massive personnel losses. Don't know what the effect was on the OL.

IMO, sacks allowed per attempt is a much more telling stat than total sacks. But even with that, stats are inadequate to convey reality in that area. You just have to know what you are looking at. They were number 1 in attempts with the gap between them and number 2 as great as the gap between 2 and 8. They had double the number of attempts as the median program.

While not ideal, an average of about 3 sacks per game on around 50 dropbacks per game isn't all that bad, IMO.

Heck, there were always new wrinkles, but it was Saban's offense, too.

Look at the difference in Golding running “Saban’s defense” vs. Smart/Pruitt running it.

The defense under golding, though not always or often dominate like 2012 or 2016, were effective and suffered form the same vulnerabilities that sabans defenses always had. The real issue was linebacker play which was goldings greatest shortcoming.

People got angry online about goldung dropping olbs into coverage but Saban does that too.

Corner back play was generally better under golding than Kirby, especially given the prevelanve of the spread in goldings era at bama. People often forget how 3rd and Kirby was absolutely a thing (and still is at UGA)

Agree 1000 percent. Let's not act like the OC position doesn't matter much, just because CKD is an offensive genius. As BIG points out, Golding was a major detriment for the defense, despite working with the greatest defensive coach ever in CNS. The optimal situation is a great OC , even if supporting a great offensive minded head coach. Sheridan is a risk. Will he prove to be great at Bama., none of us know in February. I will say I was not at all excited about Rees, but I feel he eventually became a solid, if unspectacular OC. I will gladly take that from Sheridan.

UPDATE ...

Adding Mike Bloomgren to the list of rumored names for OL coach.

Obviously, all of these names (except for possibly one of them) will be wrong. That's why it's a rumor thread. The one thing I did hear today was that we might hear something in the next couple of days. We'll see.

Who is Mike Bloomgren, Jess?
