Read an article on another site suggested he could bring an OC in that would install a different offense which I thought was absurd since the offense is CKD's and IMO he would never change to a new offense.
Reminds me of when Kevin Steele asked the reporters if they knew who the DC was at Alabama.Reviews of Shephard at junior day with recruits and keeping players on board have been phenomenal.
He'd be a great hire.
Bama fans need to realize that whoever is hired we would be running deboers system. That has been the constant everywhere hes been as an oc or head coach.
I think we prioritize Shephard regardless and id be excited by that. Im pretty certain that if Saban had hired him it would have been as a co-oc or passing game coordinator for rees.
Indeed. The best this can be spun is “shady”. I’m not a fan of how it was handled. If CKD is truly the genius behind the offense, then you kick grubb to the curb the minute he says he doesn’t want to come to Alabama. Same with Huff. Valuable time was lost in finding a coordinator and offensive line coach who gels with the coaches who want to be at Alabama. My frustration comes from knowing how quick and knee jerk kids will do a 180 on you, especially now with the portal. I'm thankful Byrne and CKD anticipated this but it is still a form and "look" of instability. I'm thankful no one can transfer until spring but I do hope any negative kickback from this in the eyes of recruits who just signed, is resolved before the portal opens back up.
Amen and thank you for saying this!I considered quoting a few of these comments but I don't want to single anyone out for this, but I do want to make a statement:
Some of you seriously are overreacting. Go lie down for an hour or two.
There is a difference between "suboptimal" and "disaster." A wide gulf of difference, for that matter. There is also some incorrect information being expressed in this thread and it seems to be throwing people off.
1. Grubb and DeBoer have not always been together. Grubb was at Fresno while DeBoer was at Indiana. You might want to look at how Grubb's offense performed when they weren't together, versus how they did when they were together (or how DeBoer did when he was on his own, by comparison).
2. We didn't hire DeBoer to get to Grubb, in any situation.
3. News broke of his hiring in Seattle with an hour to go before the transfer portal deadline, and probably wouldn't have broken then had he not gone out for a beer with a pair of Seahawks execs and been recognized. Given Byrne's comments about there being a backup plan in place already, do you think we might have known this was coming?
4. The loss of Huff hurts worse than Grubb, IMO, but it isn't unmanageable. The idea that there are only a handful of good OL coaches out there is farcical.
5. I expect the next OC to be either Sheridan or Shephard, or someone DeBoer has already worked with. Getting Missouri OC Kirby Moore wouldn't just be a small coup, it would pretty much be like nothing had ever happened with Grubb. That leaves us replacing just Huff, and while that will be a tough hire to get right, it's far from impossible.
Also, I realize that information like this only seems to seep out after someone leaves, but I was told today that one of the things that sold Saban on DeBoer was after interviewing Grubb. The implication there is that UW was doing a bunch of cool things ... and it might have been coming from someone other than the OC. Then refer to points 1 and 2, above.
With all due respect, I disagree with that perspective. First of all college football today is "shady." So it's not a bad reflection on Alabama. And Grubbs could of had a change of heart and stayed with Deboer so no need to kick him out the door fast. As far as finding replacements, unless a coach has signed a long term contract with a big buyout we aren't out anything extra. The staff hasn't been here long enough for the players to pay much attention to them leaving. Hire good replacements and all is forgotten.Indeed. The best this can be spun is “shady”. The mere fact they held this until after the portal closed means that people obviously thought the players were paying attention to the comings and goings. grubb wasn’t going to have a change of heart, he interviewed or was interested in any job that would’ve kept him in Seattle, the best we could’ve hoped for was a situation like Kiffin’s: flying cross country to see his family whenever he could throughout the season. That would’ve been an added distraction to a season that is going to be an absolute carnival of a freak show full of distractions. With all due respect, I disagree with that perspective. Prep time for the overhaul necessary on the offensive line has been lost as well as we wait for huff to make up his mind. Evaluations, preparation, and decisions have been delayed waiting on the coach to make a decision.
Everyone rowing in the same direction, all the time, or get off the ship.
The first season without Saban is going to be tough, but these distractions are only going to make it tougher.
So you think they were not coaching them up during the time they were here until they leave? I can't imagine any staff delaying evaluations, prep and decisions because they were unsure who was going to be on staff. You would have to think they were doing their jobs, working hard and not screwing around but that may just be my viewpoint.Prep time for the overhaul necessary on the offensive line has been lost as well as we wait for huff to make up his mind. I’m saying it’s useless depending on the direction taken. Alabama will be moving in a very different direction on the offensive line in almost every facet. These evaluations will take time and could vary depending on who gets hired. By second hand (81) accounts huff and grubb were the least engaging of the coaches at the REC event. Could they have been doing their job? Sure. Not sure they would be doing their best considering they were exploring every option out of there. So you think they were not coaching them up during the time they were here until they leave? Could see the argument that if Grubb wasn't 100% sold on wanting to come in the first place to just wish him well and hire Moore (and whomever for OL) from the start, who might've been easier to hire a month agoMy frustration comes from knowing how quick and knee jerk kids will do a 180 on you, especially now with the portal. Coaches in the NFL have a high turnover. What a jackass move by Grubb. It's not that he moved on but how. Wow...
Another thought - if Alabama knew he was leaving and worked with him to wait until after the portal was closed to announce it, a whole lot of players could feel like they were played. Better to just keep that down home if it played out that way.
except every single player can leave in the spring.Well, how is this any different than the players leveraging for more NIL by jumping in the portal? So what if they if they feeled played. Its a different era.
