Bama Coordinator Search Thread

I think he probably is the best OC Bama has ever had. No telling what he could have done with 100% free reigns, but watching his offense at FAU gives a hint. It's similar, but more open than what he ran here. Either he's learned a lot in a short time or he was somewhat hampered by CNS while here.

I'm no fan of Kiffin as a person, but there's no denying that's he's an offensive guru - one of the era best out there. His schemes against teams were so varied and so effective so many times...

It is a shame that he is such a head case, but (as my wife has said to me more than once), if he wasn't such a head case, he never coaches for Alabama.

Kiffin?

:leaving:

No, that would somewhat make sense, at least on the sense that Kiffin is a top flite OC.

It just seems like some people here are pinning losing Daboll on directly on Saban. The thinly veiled comments and remarks seem to imply that we'd still have Daboll and everything would be hunky dory if not for CNS.

I don't think Daboll was ever going to be a long term college coach, and his not moving his family here screams that.

I truly do not believe Saban was too committed to bringing him back in 2018 but since he's a part of the Belichick-Saban fraternity he got a mum send off. This offense was a hot mess in 2017. Saban would've been off his rocker to bring Daboll back. It was a failed experiment that got bailed out by 5-star talent.

Just going off what I know, and that's Saban talked to him for a lengthy amount of time about staying when Saban was told about Buffalo.

Even if Saban really wanted him to stay, it seems obvious he wanted out. However that played out, he obviously didn't want to be here. Whether it was just being an NE/NFL guy, not liking working for Saban, or even if he felt CNS wouldn't let him have full control of the offense, the bottom line is he wanted out. The players seem to have preferred Locksley. There didn't seem to be any love lost from them.

However it came about, he just wasn't a good fit. That being said, it's probably best he moved on.

Do you not agree?

Agreed. I am willing to give Daboll a pass on some of the playcalling during the season after seeing that second half. His playbook seemed to expand quite a bit with the personnel change. I also don’t think it’s any secret that our WR corp had their own preference. Saban always says we have to get the ball in the hands of the playmakers. In the second half that’s what happened and I for one would have liked to see an entire season of Daboll with the cuffs off.

IMHO, CNS is not going to let any OC have full control of the offense that simply is not in his makeup.

Whew. Jumping the gun aren't we?

Just because players wanted Locksley to be the new OC means they preferred him over Daboll?

I'm not an insider by any stretch but maybe, just maybe, the college game just doesn't suit Daboll. He's a young guy with a large family with opportunity to be closer to relatives on a daily basis. Combine those factors without the hassle of recruiting and he's likely right where he wants to be. Looks like a Win - Win for him.

I've watched the reactions of the players on social media for years now with a lot of coaching changes, and usually the players come out in pretty big numbers wishing their former Coaches well, good luck, etc. It was almost non-existent with Daboll.

Compare the players reaction to Pruitt leaving vs Daboll.

Regardless of what Daboll should have done with Jalen or not. Now that we have seen what an offense can do with Tua in the game. I am curious as to what type discussions Saban is going to have with Locksley about what he wants. An offense with a lot of pro style concepts (with personnel who can run it) is extraordinarily hard to defend on the college level. What we saw in the second half of the title game had A LOT of pro style concepts in it and with a QB who can operate it. We all saw how the offense opened up and moved up and down the field at a rapid pace. That is why I would be jaw dropped shocked if after seeing what the offense can do with a quarterback who can run a pro style offense. If Saban would decide to run a more RPO style offense. I really would.

I still believe in my heart of hearts that D Harris came back to run the style offense he saw in the second half. I know what he publicly said, that he loved this team and all. But he and Bo were the main two players who began showing obvious frustration with the offense beginning around the aTm game. I have to believe for him to come back and go through what it takes to go through an offseason and full season under Coach Saban. He was assured we would be running an offense that was different than the one that he was openly showing frustration with during games.

That's odd. My information was his wife didn't want to leave T-town...

Again, whether it was Daboll or Locks calling plays next year the biggest difference IMO will be our ability to throw the ball. For the first time in a while, maybe ever to this degree, we will have a QB that can attack all parts of the field through the air. So in turn, the running game will improve. Safeties will have to respect the pass, corners can't squat on short routes, and play action will drive the opposing LBs crazy. I've never been more excited to see the offense we are going to field.

Just the fact that defenses won't be able to load 8 in the box should really help the running game. You can pick your poison, but the whole field better be covered. It should be fun to watch.

Amen to that. I doubt anyone will be daring Tua to throw. I know they will still try to stop the run but not like the second half of last year.

I also was very happy to see we could go "hurry up" and make first downs as opposed to false starts and throwing the ball away. I suppose it is that Tua has a quick release. Anyway I am looking forward to going 'hurry up" now and then and watching it work.
