So if you live in Alabama and have Gameplan, you will not get the Alabama vs. Hawaii or Alabama vs. La. Monroe games? I don't understand how all this works. Can someone explain this to me?
That is correct.
Gameplan offers several games each week, each game having its own 'blackout map'. Areas which are blacked out will not be able to view that particular game. Generally speaking, the blacked out area covers the geographic area of the two teams playing in the game.
So, if you are in Alabama, you cannot view any of the Alabama games through Gameplan. This is done to support the Pay-Per-View structure. Since you live in Alabama, you have the option of ordering the Pay-Per-View. If you don't order PPV, you can't watch the game unless you go to the stadium. If you tune into the channel that is showing the Gameplan broadcast, all you'll see is the blackout map for the entire duration of the game.
If you are outside of the area of either team, you'll be able to see the game via Gameplan (because you didn't have the option of ordering PPV).
The way around this, of course, is to sign up for ESPN Gameplan online, and simply tell them that your address is somewhere outside of any possible blackout zone, like, say, New Hampshire.
Of course, then you have to deal with watching it online, about 40 seconds behind the rest of the world, and with much grainier picture... but you do what you gotta do.
