Bama Game Thread: Bowl games selection show discussion

Wait a minute, we lost to LSU close and dropped 2 spots, UGA gets destroyed by LSU and drops a spot?

Georgia gets blown out in their second loss and drops a spot, we lose our second game close and drop 7 spots.

This committee lol.

But...… but...… but...…. Bama fatigue doesn't exist. It's a myth.

A few takeaways from the committee decisions:

1. It seems pretty clear they did not want to punish any team for playing and losing in a championship game. Each of the teams that lost either barely dropped (VA, Cincinnati, Wisconsin, and Georgia) or stayed ahead of significant teams that are unequivocally better than them (Utah).

2. Their logic for Bama being fifth in the SEC pecking order is pretty clear. LSU clearly was SEC 1. Georgia was East champ and beat Florida and Auburn. Florida beat Auburn and lastly Auburn beat Bama. Furthering their argument for dropping Bama is that Bama didn't beat any currently ranked teams. I don't think the score lines/situations of the games mattered much to them.

My thoughts

1. Utah and Wisconsin should have both dropped behind Alabama and Auburn. Georgia/Florida dropping beneath Bama/Auburn is tough to justify beyond the "eye" test. If that is all that is used Bama is most likely a top 5 team.

2. Penn State wins over Iowa and Michigan are better wins than Bama has (at least according to the rankings) and their loss to Minnesota is worse than Bama and Auburn's losses. Still would be tough to slot them below Bama based on results.

3. Oregon is tough to place rankings wise because of their loss to Auburn, but in the end they are irrelevant to Bama since they were locked into Rose Bowl anyways.

In the end I think while Bama has a legitimate claim to being in the top 10 or 11 at the worst. I also think playing Michigan in the Citrus is far better than possibly playing Memphis in the Cotton, Baylor in the Sugar, or Virginia in the Orange bowl. Basically once NY6 went out the door, Bama ended up in the best possible situation and arguably better than NY6 would have been.

Wisconsin stays at #8....3 losses...these rankings are a joke
This shows why the powers that be wanted a committee. They can put teams where they want them and make up the criteria to match the result they want. Anyway, I think the playoff matches could be interesting, and I may give the Rose Bowl a look to see smash mouth versus new wave football. I like the match-up with Michigan, and I hope Coach Saban can get the guys ready to play because I would hate to hear the media if Harbaugh can beat Saban.

I think the fact that the committee had a new Chair this season with Mullens perhaps changed their philosophy a bit about how to rank teams. This season it seemed that it didn't matter who a team lost to but only who they beat. Oklahoma, Georgia, Oregon, and Wisconsin all lost to unranked opponents yet they all finished in the Top 10 simply because they beat a ranked team(s).

Guys, I understand being upset about your ranking, but IMO you were saved from a terrible bowl match-up because of their idiocy. Celebrate their nonsense because you benefit. More people will watch this Alabama game than any of the NY6 bowls. It will probably get better ratings than any non-playoff bowl game this post-season.

Not only this, but I think it's a wake-up call for the players. They won't like sitting so far down in the polls at all. Time for the Bama Factor to resurrect itself.

Any thoughts on Herbstreit's comment re: the Bama player only meeting? In case you missed it, he said that when he was talking to Tua this past Tuesday Tua mentioned a players only meeting among those thinking about leaving and that it sounded like an all in or all out type of thing.

It's legit......

The (Draft Eligible players) have all talked with CNS.... and then collectively got together and decided they are 'All In' on finishing this season together on the field.

I'll be very surprised if anyone breaks that pact.

That is great to hear! Lots of concern that we would have quite a few guys not playing in the bowl game.
