Does Gus leave after this?

Gus isn't going anywhere. They DO give us fits you have to admit. This is two years in a row we were the better team on paper yet they had their way with our defense more or less.

They HAD us on the ropes bigtime tonight.....they just didn't know we were pulling the 'rope-a-dope' ;)

Don't think he'll leave. He can obviously score points on one of the best defenses in the league. If he can find a really good DC, he'll have Auburn competing in the SEC and national picture year in and year out.
The thing is, this type of offense is bad for the defense. There's no way around that. Part of that is what Saban alluded to, that running that offense in practice makes coaching defense more difficult. The other is the simple fact that they don't hold onto the ball for as long, and this puts their defense back out there sooner. We've seen some up tempo teams slow down against Alabama on purpose, just to give their defense a rest. So, I think you can try to improve your defense, but this type of offense introduces some fundamental flaws. This even manifested itself a bit with Alabama, as they had some quick scores that allowed Auburn to hold onto the ball a lot longer and put more stress on the defense.

I don't follow/watch NFL, but I wonder if they can run this type offense effectively?

Not really because the refs would slow the game down and call the penalties that get missed in college. The speed sweeps wouldn't work because EVERYONE is fast in the NFL. Even Cam has had to learn to become a pocket passer to have success and stay healthy in the NFL.

Now I’ll be the first to admit I hate his style of offense and I never thought it would work in the SEC past a few game tapes worth of film but saying Gus will go to the NFL with this is a bit of a stretch in my opinion. It would be like saying Paul Johnson is taking the triple option to the NFL, just won’t happen.

Things I don't waste time worrying about: where Gus Malzahn is coaching.

We spotted him 14 on the road and beat him in 09.
He got zero points on us in 11.
He scored 42 tonight and still got pancaked.

He's 2-3 against us and both wins owe more to us not finishing than one single thing he's done. He also doesn't seem to realize that DEFENSE is a huge part of the game.

Anyone worried about Gus (from Alabama) needs to delete the words Kick Six from his vocabulary.

You're right. Chip Kelly tried it last year and his team ran out of gas defensively last year. He still runs a hurry-up but it's not warp speed like he ran at Oregon. Also, good point about the refs. They dictate the game at the NFL level.

I think it's more complicated than that - I think when you practice against HUNH teams all day your defense it great for 'basketball on grass' but wilts under more conventional (power) offenses. IOW, if it was as easy as simply 'finding a good DC" one of the HUNH coaches would have by now - yet none of them filed a solid defense...

I will add that it's not just about the DC. These HUNH coaches simply don't believe in defense in the first place. They don't recruit for it and they will never coach it. How could a legit defensive player even consider going there when Gus is yelling GO GO GO at the top of his lungs? He obviously doesn't respect defense enough to go toe-to-toe with it. To him, defense is just in the way. I would never play for a coach like that.

Depends on what NFL team offers him a job, I guess. I'm thinking he actually really likes college and will just attempt to get a really good DC and turn his defense around.

I am not sure his offensive system would work well in the NFL. He'd have to modify it.

I hope he stays now. His weak post game conference where he gave the "whatever" speech and didn't give Bama any credit for the win, made me apathetic to anything regarding Gus from now on. Lame move on his part IMO, so screw Gus and his bus. I had some respect for him before, but after that post-game interview, no more.

I don't care what he does. We took the best he had to offer tonight and he leaves a loser.

I understand being disappointed, but Gus was just plain "smug" in that presser. All he could talk about "yards" and "exposing Alabama's 5 star players" and "red zone trips". I wished someone would have said "geez, sound a little like the game last year when Bama beat you everywhere but the scoreboard. So I guess the "scoreboard" is what counts, right or "whatever'?

Yeah I didn't like how he sounded either. Very abrupt and well, rude... Oh well, sucks to be you Gus and Aub. Try losing like we did last year - now that stunk!
