I thought he’d be convicted on the minor counts and have a hung jury on the more serious ones.

Yes, he still has a part of the population that will back him regardless. But this is a bridge too far for all but the most rabid.
I’m honestly surprised that being a convicted felon isn’t a disqualification for the job, but apparently it isn’t. Regardless, the electorate is very closely divided. If only 5% of voters change their votes from Trump to Biden, or simply sit home rather than vote for Trump, it swings the election decidedly in Biden’s favor.
The smart move for the Republicans would be to draft Nikki Haley at the convention  she pretty consistently got 20% of the vote in primaries that occurred even after she stopped campaigning.
But that would be smart. And due to the way the Republicans allocate delegates in the primaries, there’s no indication that “smart,†and “Republican delegate,†have much in common.
