I'm done with Eli now. Regardless, whether he wanted to continue in his role calling Bama games it was not his prerogative or right to do so. Bama likely operated within his/CTSN contract.

He has gone on the media roadshow to throw shade on Byrne and Bama all the while not acknowledging his own refusal gestures to make it a positive for all parties.

By his actions, he thinks he is bigger than the program.
Nah…he feels done wrong and has that right.

He made himself the bad guy here by playing the victim. He wasn't renewed, he was offered a farewell and other amenities...instead of saying ok, lets do it....and becoming an icon in Bama lore.....he chose to reject the offers and go to the media to let everyone know that poor Eli was basically fired.

The university took the high road.

Eli Gold's ego took the low road.

Wish him well, I'm done with him. How he reacted showed who he is.
Once again, just because he didn’t bow down to to the University’s demands, and chose to tell the truth doesn’t make him a bad guy..

And he exercised his rights, and now he suffers the consequences as some folks lose respect for him.

No one is saying that he didn't have a right to say these things. They are just saying that they disagree with his decision, as is their right.
At least you can respond in a respectful manner instead of moooooing at me just because I have a different opinion. I’ve always found that kind of weird.

Anyway we can agree to disagree as far as I’m concerned. Roll Tide.

He has the right to ruin his reputation, certainly. Good luck to him.

By the way, the university gave him above and beyond what they had to as a sign of respect. He did not reciprocate that respect with his decision to play victim. It's called professionalism. There was a way for both parties to handle this and it be a win win situation. Instead, Eli decided, you know what, I'm mad and gonna exaggerate my side to play victim and win sympathy.

Now he's out and has sullied his reputation at Bama. Was a dumb move. He could have come and gone as he pleased, had his ego stroked whenever he wanted. Nope, he went the complete opposite direction because he made an emotional decision with his ego.

OK, guys. We have different opinions as to whether Eli's reaction to the change is appropriate or not. That's fine. Debate all you want.

But don't disparage the opposite side and definitely don't disparage a specific poster or his/her knowledge. Just say that you see it differently and present your logic as to why.

Next, "I'm rubber, you're glue," inanity locks the thread.

When Gene Stallings “retired” in 1996, there was every reason in the world for him to go out “flaming” people. The only thing he would say (and to this day as far as I know) was he and the administration were not “on the same page”.

Many years later the real story came out, but Stallings has always maintained the high ground whenever the subject comes up. Many times I’ve heard him say “it was just time”.

Gene learned through the years that sometimes the best thing to say is as little as possible.

I think the Chris Stewart doubters calling football need to listen to these play calls against UGA. I think he is fantastic.

That’s the “obnoxious homer” stuff I’m talking about. I’m just not a fan of it. Yeah it’s not as bad as Georgia’s guy or Stan and Rob but it’s annoying to me. Honestly I think it’s just a step above putting Chad Horne and Roll Tide Willie in the booth to call games.

I guess I just prefer a closer to neutral voice calling games that isn’t complaining about refs, throwing crazy sayings in the broadcast, or throwing fan smack comments into a broadcast. And before you say “you took all that from a less than a minute clip?”no I’ve listened to Stewart for years to make this opinion. However I think if the university wanted a guy to replace Eli right now then he was the only logical choice based on fan support and experience.

He is just not my taste in delivery and style, but he will make a lot of Alabama fans happy.

Some years ago, I ran into a woman who was in my parents' circle of friends, though I knew her only well enough to say, "Hello, Mrs. [surname]". She had recently divorced her husband of 40+ years, mainly for being untrustworthy on a number of fronts for a long time. And there's no doubt he was untrustworthy.

But he was good-looking and the life of the party and a lot of other girls would have wanted to be in her place when she married him. And she did find it in her to stay with him for more than 4 decades and to have 3-4 children with him.

She said to me, "You know [ex's name] and I are divorced." I replied that I knew and was sorry when I heard it. She said, "I'm not. He was a [insert decidedly non-TF phrase]."

Coming from a woman that I'd never heard say anything you wouldn't hear in a mid-century Disney animation, I was taken a bit aback. I did stammer out something along the lines of being sorry such a long marriage ended that way and found an excuse to end the conversation.

The point is, she may have been 1,000% right in her characterization of her ex. But to my eyes, she's the one who looked bad.

On the spot, I learned never to trash a former long-term romantic interest in public, no matter how much I felt she deserved it. It's just a really bad look for the one slinging the mud. Much better to say something like, "I wish Ex well. But there were reasons we split up, and those reasons are still valid."

Eli needed a lesson like that.
I learned to tell divorcing parents not to trash their ex to their children. S/he is still their mother/father. If you do that, then when they grow up they will gravitate to the ex. Happens just about all the time.
