re: ESPNU 150

'Bout time ESPN started using star rankings

re: ESPNU 150

I noticed that Demarco Cobbs, Keenan Allen, James Stone, Damien Robinson, John Fulton, Gabe King, Kyle Prater, and C.J. Mosley all made the 150 too.

Harrison Jones, Vic Beasley and Owens all just missed out.

Still Florida definitely looks like the number 1 class right now, don't know how many more they'll add.

I actually like ESPN's numerical ratings over the stars. Stars on the other sites are so arbitrary. They are automatically given based on overall rank, not talent.

Plus, the numerical grades are also nice for comparing the top players to previous years' top players. For example, Julio Jones, Trent Richardson & Dre Kirkpatrick all rated at grades of 90+. However, this year, the highest rated player is currently at just 88.

Well Rivals doesn't just go by general numbers (although their rival ratings, which are similar to the numerical rankings of ESPN are kinda general), they don't really have a set number of 5 star or 4 star talent, though it is usually is in the same ball park. And ESPN's general numerical rankings were/are basically just as based on overall rank as Rival's stars. As in the 150 is usually in a general numerical range, and all the way down to an 80 ranking is about 300+. All that said, I appreciate ESPN's ranking style too, and glad they didn't all together do away with it, but Stars and recruits are meant for each other:D

In my opinion, there should be an elusive rating for some prospects. Some years, there is no one that should garner that attention, other years there are two or three. Most years, the consensus top 5 shouldn't be grouped with the top 25. I said it in another thread, sorry to repeat, but the fact that Julio wasn't the top player in the nation by any of the services is disturbing.

Wouldn't be a bad idea.

And regarding Julio, it goes back to previous point that I end up saying every year. The services put way too much stock in these all star games. Julio being hurt, didn't help those performances.

No one mentioned but Chad Lindsay is the number 1 ranked OG for ESPNU. The big uglies up front never get mentioned so here's to the big uglies!

I saw his highlights and I was impressed, but he's not gettin a lot of love from other recruiting services. Oh well, they'll figure out soon enough that he is one of the best. Wait till Coach Pendry get a hold of him!

If you look at Chad Lindsay on all three services:

ESPNU - #1
Scout - #9
Rivals - #36

What sticks out is that Rivals has done a poor job in evaluating Lindsay. Looks like ESPNU and Scout did a good job.

I have heard a second hand, hearsay story about Chad's father getting into it with Rivals earlier this year over one of their articles about Chad. As the unsubstantiated story goes Mr. Lindsay read an article from them where one of the Rivals anaylsts said that Chad 'claims' certain offers. Supposedly the father called up Rivals and invited them to come to his house and see the written offers for themselves if they didn't believe what Chad said.

Now whether or not that story is true or that it has anything to do with Rivals ranking Chad Lindsay so low, I have no idea. In any event there is no arguing he is one of the best OGs in the country at least according to Scout.com and ESPNU/Scout.Inc.

Saban and Pendry would not have gone to Texas to get Lindsay if he wasn't one of the top OGs in the country. I think when Lindsay gets to the capstone, he will be the understudy of Vlachos at center.
