Favorite BBQ Eatery

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

The Goal Post is an icon of my childhood. We moved around Alabama and Georgia a bit, but always went back to visit my mom's family in Gadsden when we lived elsewhere. When my sisters and I could look out the station wagon window and see the neon-lit field goal kicker, we knew we were almost there.

He never missed one.
HAHA..That neon field goal kicker is still there & still works I'm pretty sure..And that sign is a childhood memory of mine as well when we would pile up & go to town at night..It's a really cool sign & is iconic to Anniston..

Here's a pic of it in all its glory..

This is a warning if you visit Oxford MS. I was there last night for one of my son's football games. Afterwards we thought we would try out their BBQ place located on the main square in Oxford near the university. It is called the Rib Cage. Between us, we tried their ribs, pulled pork, bbq chicken and sides. The ribs were tender but not very good. Unfortunately, that was the highlight as the chicken was un-edible, the pulled pork and sauce was awful and even the beans and slaw were bad. And it was expensive to boot.

Tidefans ... you have been warned!!!!

Thanks for the warning. I'll stick w/ Ajax or w/ Old Taylor Grocery out in the country. I've been to Oxford a number of times--my son's a two-time Reb alum--and I've never even heard of this place. I know he never talks about it. But, note to self made; many thanks!

I found this article about the Goal Post that had a video of the neon sign, and after talking about this earlier today, I took my girls to eat at the Goal Post tonight & it was really really good..I ate the BBQ naturally & my baby girl had the smoked chicken salad(really really good), my other girl had the hamburger steak dinner, and I ended up eating half of it, cause she wanted some on my BBQ..The brown gravy that was on the hamburger steak was outstanding, I could've drank a cupful of it, had I had a cupful of it..It was the 1st time I ate there in about a year or so, and it's still the best in Anniston, it's actually under new ownership from the last time I had eaten there, but, it's still the best in this area..If ya come toward Anniston, I highly recommend stopping by for a try, you won't be disappointed..I guarantee ya that..And they said they're going to have the sign refurbished back to where the goalpost lights up & have a fresh coat of paint to brighten it back up to what it should be..My tummy thanks y'all for this thread whick led me there to eat this evening..LOL

To my knowledge, there aren't a whole lot of places around here (from Destin to Pensacola) to get good BBQ. Maybe too many yankee transplants??? A little hole in the wall here in Navarre called The Rib Shack does a great job with their ribs. Otherwise, I can't really recommend anything in northwest Florida. :(

If anybody can recommend somewhere, please let me know.

If you're ever in Gulf Shores on County Rd 10 there's a little shack place called Down Home Q that has some killer brisket

Dude , I could have told you.. if you want decent BBQ in the Oxford area...go to Memphis...there's not any in Oxford or the surrounding area of Mississippi anywhere. Catfish, yes, BBQ, no.

R & B BBQ in Lincoln, AL is pretty good, but customer service is terrible. Don't ask for anything "special" because they don't cater to customer request. You don't like it go somewhere else.

Campbell's BBQ in Talladega is where we generally get our BBQ lately. The hot BBQ sauce rocks!

There used to be a place in Hiram Georgia we would eat at every night when I worked under Greystone EMC, had the best pork ribs I've EVER eaten! Just wished I could remember the name of the place.

I've got to throw in Lisa's BBQ in Fayette, Al. Tasty and meatiest ribs I've found. Of course, I'm not biased, at all. For real though, not even a little.

I know chains are looked down upon, but Jim & Nick's is very good. They have legit sauces and actually smoke their meat. A smoked beef brisket sandwich on sourdough with their rolls... Outstanding.

Martin's in Nolensville, TN is outstanding as well.

I'll take your word for it, but here's the thing. Good BBQ doesn't come from a recipe. BBQ done right is a labor of love performed by leathered zen-masters who through years of sweat and tears have learned to be one with the meat. Each smoke is a work of art. It's just not something that can be trained and cloned and it doesn't fit well into the whole chain model. One branch may do things right, perhaps because they got lucky and hired a pitmaster who really knows what he's doing. But those guys don't just grow on trees and it's nearly impossible to put one in every branch of a chain.

All I know is it tastes good.

I'll second Martin's. It's the best bbq place in Middle TN, IMO.
